Fake CBI officer walks into police net
PK Jaiswar/TNS

Amritsar, June 5
When a dismissed manager of Indian Overseas Bank thought of approaching the Central Bureau of Investigation for probing his case, he never knew that he was walking into a trap, orchestrated by four criminal brains.

But Vijay Kumar Moga, the dismissed manager, realised the trick soon and he reported the matter to the police, which laid its own trap to catch the criminals.

The Civil Line police nabbed Inderjit Singh, who posed as a CBI officer, for allegedly extorting money from Vijay Kumar.

The police has also booked his three accomplices, identified as Neelam Thakur, Rajiv Sharma and Subash Choudhary, all based at New Delhi, who were allegedly part of the racket, under Sections 420, 419, 386, 506 and 120-B of the IPC.

Vijay Kumar was a branch manager posted at Indian Overseas Bank, who was suspended in July 2008 and later dismissed from his services in January this year.

According to Vijay, he wanted a CBI probe into his case as he was falsely implicated and later dismissed from his service.

He came in contact with Neelam Thakur, who was his customer, and used to live in Khandwala area in Chheharta. She had later shifted to Delhi.

He said Neelam introduced Inderjit Singh as a senior CBI officer who promised him to provide justice and demanded Rs 2.50 lakh for the purpose.

“I gave him Rs 10,000 on the spot and later Rs 35,000 to him on May 4 outside Novelty Sweet shop,” he told the police. However, he later came to know that the accused was not a CBI officer and asked him to return the money.

But the tricksters, however, threatened to kill him and his daughter and implicate them in a false case. Inderjit asked him to deposit the remaining amount in his Axis Bank account (No 2240101000002745). He said he deposited more than Rs 1 lakh in this account in three installments.

“On June 3, I received a call from Subash Chaudhry and Rajiv Sharma that they were senior officials of the CBI and asked him to gave remaining amount to Inderjit,” he stated to the police.

Then he reported the matter to the police. Inderjit was caught taking the money.

Harsandeep Singh, Investigating Officer, said the police also recovered two PAN cards from Inderjit having his photograph.

Inderjit was presented in the court of the duty magistrate today and taken on a police remand. Further investigations were under progress, he added.
