Mystery shrouds engineer’s death
Panipat, June 5 An alumnus of BIT-Mesra and son of a retired judge, Tiru had been working as senior electrical engineer with the refinery for the past three years. His body was fished out of the water reservoir on the refinery premises on May 31. He reported for the work on May 30 at 8 pm for his 12-hour night shift. However, he was reported missing at 10 pm. After attempts to contact him on his mobile phone and the official walkie-talkie proved futile, senior engineers sent a team to his house, where his landlords denied having any knowledge about Tiru. The computerised check-in-system at the refinery showed that Tiru had not left the refinery. The attendant at the water reservoir, which collects water from the Delhi parallel canal for refinery operations, reported that he had found a pair of trousers, two mobile phones, a walkie-talkie, helmet and wallet of Tiru. Senior officials at the refinery reported the matter to the police and called for divers at 12:30 am. His body was fished out at 2 am. Sources confided that there was nothing to suggest that the engineer had committed suicide or was murdered as the evidence collected thus far stated otherwise. His colleagues had told the police that there were no signs of any depression in Tiru before the incident. District police chief Pankaj Nain denied that Tiru had reported against the oil mafia and was killed by them. Nain said Tiru was posted in the electrical wing and had nothing to do with the oil operations. There were neither any signs of struggle nor any injury marks on the body that pointed that Tiru had been murdered. There is nothing to conclude that it was murdered. However, sources in the refinery said it was unlikely that Tiru could have gone to the reservoir to take a bath as there were a number of bathrooms available in the refinery. Doctors at the Civil Hospital, who had conducted the postmortem, said it had been found that Tiru’s lungs had inhaled water, which suggested that he was alive when he entered the waters. Nain said the tissue collected from his vital organs had been sent for chemical examination to ascertain weather he was under any intoxication. The details of his mobile phone were also being scrutinised. The police had so far been dealing with the incident as per the provisions of Section 174 of the CrPC, but if some evidence came out from the chemical examination report, action as per the law would be initiated, Nain said. |
Action against Baba Ramdev
Sirsa, June 5 Local BJP workers led by Jagdish Chopra, state unit vice-president and Renu Sharma, district president, held a demonstration wearing black badges. INLD leader Abhey Singh Chautala said the UPA government had stifled democracy by beating up peaceful agitators. Meanwhile, Hari Singh, a protester sitting in fast at Sirsa in support of Baba Ramdev, was taken ill and shifted to the local general hospital. Meanwhile, supporters of Baba Ramdev continued their dharna at Lal Batti Chowk in Fatehabad for the second day today. Activists of the Bharat Swabhiman Trust took out a candle march in the town to register their protest against the government action . The Bajrang Dal has given a call for a bandh tomorrow in Tohana. FARIDABAD: BJP leaders organised a “protest march” to express resentment over the use of police force against Baba Ramdev and his supporters. The march passed through the main market of Old Faridabad before terminating at Old Faridabad Chowk on Delhi-Mathura national highway. There were some tense moments when the agitators faced a police barricade in Sector 16 A near Old Faridabad Chowk. However, DC Praveen Kumar intervened and allowed the agitators to proceed on condition that they would terminate the march at Old Faridabad Chowk without hindering the movement of traffic. SONEPAT: Hundreds of BJP activists led by MLA Kavita Jain, former MP Kishan Singh Sangwan and state media in charge Rajiv Jain on Sunday protested against the Congress-led UPA Government action to crush the peaceful agitation launched by Baba Ramdev and burnt an effigy of the government. Addressing the protesters, Jain charged the Central Government with using police force against the peaceful agitators, adding that this action was ample to prove that the government was not willing to take action against those who had deposited their black money in foreign banks. ROHTAK: Hundreds of residents held meetings and protest against the arrest of Baba Ramdev. They charged the government with highhandedness in dealing with the peaceful agitation. Members of the local unit of the Indian Medical Association, Senior Citizens Forum, Haryana Roadways Bhrashtachar Virodhi Sanghathan and the Sain Samaj Ekta Manch, who sat on a fast near the mini-secretariat on Saturday, said the movement against corruption could not be curbed in this manner as more and more people would come out in support of the demand of toughest action against the corrupt. |
High Court lauds plots-for-poor scheme
Chandigarh, June 5 The High Court has also expressed unhappiness over the number of petitions being filed to apply brakes to the worthy proposal of allotting land to the deprived. Describing it as a “laudable scheme”, Justice Ranjit Singh has made it clear that the land to be allocated to the poor was being put to “good and beneficial” use. The assertion came during the hearing of a petition filed by Umed Singh against the state of Haryana and other respondents. Justice Ranjit Singh asserted: “The government has floated a scheme for the allotment of 100 sq yard plots to some poor persons, who are living below the poverty line.” Justice Ranjit Singh asserted: In any case, the petitioner, Umed Singh, has no locus standi to file this petition as it is not his land, out of which these plots are being allotted”. Dismissing the petition, Justice Ranjit Singh added: “Some of the plots are being allotted out of shamlat deh, which can be utilised for this purpose.” |
Doctors, builder at loggerheads over possession of villas
Karnal, June 5 However, the builders - Chandigarh Developers - maintain that the villas were nearing completion, but remained non-committal about the handing over of the showrooms to the allottees. A Tribune team, which visited the site, found that 16 out of 25 villas were almost complete, while no time frame had been set for the completion of showrooms. The allottees have made several complaints against the builders for not meeting the “contractual obligations” and a case of cheating and assault was also registered against nine employees of Chandigarh Developers on the directions of the court on the complaint of Ravinder Pal, who along with his brother, had booked two villas. Ravinder Pal said he and his brother, Tejinder Pal, had booked two villas for Rs 32.90 lakh each in September 2008. They deposited 10 per cent of the cost on February 11, 2009, and Rs 3.25 lakh on April 29, 2010. However, when they asked the builders to give the possession, they demanded Rs 39 lakh for each villa. Ravinder Pal alleged that when they opposed to the excess payment, the employees of the builder beat them up. Ravinder Pal is not the lone allottee running after the builders to get the possession, there are a number of doctors, who have decided to form an association to take on the builder for alleged breach of contract. The doctors claimed that the builders promised to give them the possession by 2008. On the contrary, the builder was charging interest from them. They threatened to move court in this matter. Dr GD Sharma, who was the first to book a villa in CHD City near Karna Lake, said he applied for a residential villa in Silver Country Villas, Karnal, and received the allotment letter from CHD Developers, asking him to send the signed buyers agreement. He claimed that he made all payments, amounting to Rs 31,25,700, by January 2008 and also received a no-dues slip, but on his visit to the spot he was surprised to find that the villa was being used as an office by the builders. Sharma said he wrote to CMD Ravi Saund and CEO Rajpal for handing over the possession, but in vain. He also wrote to the Chief Minister, the DC and the Karnal SP, but to no effect. Dr Jawa said why should they pay the interest for the lapse on the part of the builder. Another victim, Dr Naresh Kaushal, stated that he was allotted a showroom measuring 204 sq yards, but when he went to the site he was told that only 75 yards could be constructed as the remaining area would be used for parking and building other infrastructure. Kaushal said when he stopped paying the instalments, the builder charged Rs 30 lakh as interest from him. A few applicants have already moved the court. Rahul Tewari, assistant manager at CHD City, said: “We have asked the parties concerned to take the possession, but did not say anything about the interest being charged. We are offering 204 sq yards, but the built-up area will be 75 sq yards as per the existing building laws.” |
