PANDEMONIUM AT RAMLILA GROUNDS Cops ordered hospitals to discharge us immediately, allege the injured Himani Chandel Tribune News Service
New Delhi, June 5
They said that they were forcibly discharged from the hospitals without treatment. People said that the police came to the hospital in the morning and ordered the staff not to treat victims and discharge them immediately. "After they were pressurized by the police, the hospital staff treated us like animals. Doctors refused to pay attention to us," said Manoj Vishwakarma, from Rewari Bihar, who was also a victim of last night's pandemonium at Ramlila Grounds. "My left foot was fractured last night, but the doctors discharged me saying that everything is normal. They took the X-ray of my right foot and asked us to leave," said Ram Govind Gupta from Bihar. The apathy of doctors left the victims agitated many of whom had arguments with the hospital staff and doctors. "People were released with drips and bleeding wounds," said Manoj."My right hand was swollen and it was paining, but I had to wait for over four hours as the police officials were treated first, most of them had minor injuries," Jai Kishan Roy from Tamil Nadu. Reporting about yesterday's incident, he said that the police misbehaved with women and beat people ruthlessly. "In fact, we tried to protect a few policemen from getting injured as people were getting agitated. We appealed to the supporters to stay calm as we knew that if any policeman got injured by any chance, they would get an excuse to start firing," said Roy. "I came at 1 am with my sister whose left leg was fractured and when I took my sister for the X-ray, they took an X-ray of the right leg. When I questioned the doctors, they said everything was normal and asked us to leave," said Alok Solanki, who was with his injured sister near the |
Evicted supporters seek shelter in gurdwaras
New Delhi, June 5 More than 1,000 supporters of Ramdev turned up at Gurdwara Bangla Sahib alone. Other smaller temples on the Kali Bari Marg and Mandir Marg in Connaught Place also had followers, seeking shelter in the wee hours of the morning. They sought shelter to rest and freshen up in the morning. Many of them were injured and decided to return to their hometowns, though they were adamant that they would support Ramdev, no matter what. Most of the groups were outsiders who had nowhere to go and had especially come to Delhi for the 15-day camp. "We saw people getting beaten up. Most of the elderly who had come to take treatment at the camp also got caught up in the tussle between the police and supporters," said 35-year-old Savita Joshi from Lucknow, one of the supporters at Gurdwara Bangla Sahib. "Electricity was cut and then in the darkness, the police fired teargas shells and started beating everybody. I tried to flee, but could not see anything because of the teargas and bumped into some policemen who started beating me with batons. I was dragged like a dog by my legs till the main road and then dumped like garbage in one of the police vans," said Keshav Chaudhry. Many agitated supporters gathered at the Jantar Mantar this morning, but here also they were prevented from staging a protest by the police. "About 30-40 people had gathered at the heavily barricaded Jantar Mantar, but they were asked to leave the place by the police," said an aide of Baba Ramdev. The police had barricaded the area, even the media was not allowed to cross the barricade. Soon the police imposed prohibitory orders in New Delhi district, in an effort to preempt any protest. "We have imposed Section 144 of CRPC in New Delhi district," a senior police official said. The official said the police had anticipated protest at India Gate, Boat Club or Jantar
Mantar. BJP protests
BJP activists led by senior leader V K Malhotra today protested outside Ramlila Maidan against the police action on Baba Ramdev and supporters. Malhotra, accompanied by MLAs and other leaders, tried to enter the Maidan this morning. The leaders claimed they were detained by the police. Malhotra alleged that the government has gone beyond the barbaric days of emergency and even dictators do not mete out such treatment to its citizens. |
Many cops feel used for political ends
New Delhi, June 5 Perhaps the fact that a majority of Baba Ramdev's supporters come from rural areas like the majority of Delhi police constables and head constables who come from the villages of Haryana, Rajasthan and western UP, has something to do with the sympathies. Several police personnel present at Ramlila Maidan this afternoon even used abusive words against the politicians who ordered the police to beat away the innocent protestors. "We are small pawns in the system, used to carry out the dirtiest work. If it had been in my hand, I would have never touched anybody. But even the seniormost police official is helpless before the government and has to follow orders," said an elderly head constable while speaking to The Tribune. The policeman said that although he was not in action during the night, his colleagues fed him with all the inputs and that he was not happy either with what had happened. "You will not find one policeman who will say that it was correct to disperse women and children in the middle of night. No matter what the emergency was. What happened here is wrong," opined another policeman. Hailing from Haryana's Hissar district, a policeman said that the police is used as a tool for political ends. "What were these people doing. Sleeping? Congress wanted Baba Ramdev removed from the scene as he was building up a movement and the innocent people paid the price. This is all politics and the police is used by these politicians," he said. Such feelings were not restricted to junior officials only, a senior police official from the Central district said that he felt sorry about the incident, but could not do anything about it. "These things happen. Even we feel bad about them, but we are helpless. Our job is not to question, but follow orders," he said, adding that no excesses were committed on the people as for as he knows. |
Children walk for environment
New Delhi, June 5 The walk, organised by the ministry of environment and forests, was held from India Gate to Rafi Marg in central Delhi. It started at 6.30 am. Enthusiastic students began lining up for the walk with catchy posters and slogans. Eleven-year-old Mohit Vashistha from Ryan International said, "I have come here to spread the message to save environment and lives." Over the past few days, local radio stations have been publicising the event and urging more and more people to contribute to the cause. "The youth has a very important role in promoting the cause of environment. With so many children turning up for the walk, it shows the awareness on environmental issues is on the rise", said Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh, as he flagged off the march. "First step to save the mother earth: Stop cutting down the trees," said Kapil Nandwani, 14, a student of Kannada Senior Secondary School . |
Health camp focusing on yoga held
New Delhi, June 5 "Yoga does not require running on treadmills or using power consuming fitness machinery to stay fit and healthy. Just 30 minutes of yogasanas can cure numerous ailments. We can reduce carbon footprint drastically if people switch over from exercising in gymnasium to yoga," one of the doctors told the participants. Former US vice-president Al Gore's documentary on climate change 'The Inconvenient Truth' was screened on the occasion.--PTI |
11,000 aspirants take CATE
New Delhi, June 5 Prof Sumanyu Satpathy, head of the English department, said, "We will select 6,000 students after checking the first portion of the test paper and of those students, we will check the second portion and bring out the final list." The CATE entrance test that took place today at 25 centres saw a heavy influx of aspirants and their parents who accompanied them. The exam was conducted from 2 pm to 3.30 pm and even though students had to report at their designated centres by 1.30 pm, most of them came early and met with other students. They mingled with one another, asking questions about what to expect in the entrance exam. Post-exam, most of the students had mixed reactions. While some said that the first section in the question paper, which was largely objective, was tough, others said that they were satisfied with their performance in the second half of the paper, that was more subjective related to composition, poetry and writing skills. "I had a good exam. I am hopeful that I would get through. However, now the tension about the college has begun. I hope I get a college of my choice. After, Lady Shri Ram College, I am pinning my hopes on Kamla Nehru and Miranda," said Awasthi Narayanan, one of the aspirants at the Kamla Nehru centre. According to the department of English, 11,000 aspirants have registered for CATE this year as against 10,000 in 2010. CATE score will be accepted by 21 DU colleges for admission while the rest of the 25 colleges offering BA (H) English admit students based on class XII scores. In all, 840 seats are going to be filled through CATE this year. |
Rs 5 lakh to kin of dead
Greater Noida, June 5 According to sources, the state government is learnt to have decided to give financial help of Rs 5 lakh each to the next of the kin of the killed farmers. But there has been no decision on the quantum of financial help to be given to the injured villagers. The farmers have demanded a higher compensation for land along with financial aid to the families of those killed and wounded in the violence. A violent clash had taken place on May 7 between farmers and the police at Bhatta-Parssaul village in Greater Noida. Three farmers and two policemen were killed in the clash while many farmers were wounded. More farmers move court against land acquisition Farmers of two more villages in Noida Extension have approached the Allahabad High Court with the complaint that the Greater Noida Authority, along with agricultural land, has acquired their Abadi land also. Half a dozen farmers from Bisarakh and Patwadi villages are learnt to have knocked at the doors of the high court. In their writ petitions, they have accused the GNA of acquiring their Abadi land. The hearing of the case is expected to take place in July. Reacting to the move, deputy CEO of the GNA Abhilesh Singh said the authority would try to reach on an agreement with the farmers whose problems could not be resolved due to any reason. The Allahabad High Court has already de-notified the acquisition of 159 acres in Saberri village and 40 hectares in Gulistaan village. The apex court has also canceled the acquisition notification of 207 hectares in Makoda village while a stay order was passed regarding 32 hectares in Bisarakh. |
Mercury soaring, but beer sale
going down
New Delhi, June 5 The sale of beer has shown a downslide in May as against the figures last year. Delhiites consumed 12.49 lakh cases of beer this May as compared to about 15 lakh cases during the same period last year, recording a decrease of more than 2 lakh cases. According to the Excise Department data, 12,49,474 cases of beer were sold in the city last month. One case contains 12 bottles. While the industry blames it on the rise in beer rate, the excise department attributes the decline in sale to the fluctuating city weather. Beer became dearer by Rs 20 per bottle since July 2010 due to the additional levy imposed by the city government. “April to June are considered best period for maximum beer sale in the city due to the prevailing hot weather during this time,” said a senior excise official. The sale of beer in April this year was also less than the last year. “There were rains in between which affected the demand for the beer in the city,” said the official. The demand for strong beer is more than the light beer as 80 per cent of the total beer sale consists of strong beer in the city.—PTI |
Delhiites can soon sell solar power to discoms
New Delhi, June 5 The Delhi government, in partnership with the ministry of new and renewable energy, is planning to implement a plan on this. "We are in the final stage of implementing the rooftop solar energy policy and it will be launched in 3-4 months," a senior Delhi government official said. "This is a unique initiative of the government which will help promote clean and renewable energy in the city," he added. Under the proposed policy, by signing a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the company supplying power in their respective areas, the residents can get solar power plants installed on their rooftops. The cost of setting up such a plant in an area of 200 square metre will be between Rs 8 lakh and 9 lakh. According to the policy, house owners can either lease out their roofs to a developer, who will then set up the unit, or pay 30 per cent of the cost of installation. The remaining 70 per cent will be financed through banks. The cost of generating each unit of power from the rooftop plant will be Rs 17.50 which the owner of the rooftop can sell to any of the power supplying companies. Though the cost of the power generated from these plants will be high, the government will encourage discoms by providing subsidies to them so that they can buy power from the residents. These plants will be set up using the solar photo-voltaic technology as they can be easily mounted on rooftops. The subsidy will be given under the annual revenue requirement. "Even though the government is yet to make significant headway in the sector of solar energy, its availability is quite sufficient," the official said. According to India Meteorological Department data, most parts of the country receive 4 to 7 kilowatts of solar radiation per square metre every day. For Delhi, the figure is 5.5 kilowatt. Energy expert Shankar Sharma is of the opinion that this is a positive move by the Delhi government as solar energy is an alternative source of energy. "Solar energy is the future source of energy as the conventional sources of energy will soon be exhausted. Unlike the conventional sources of energy, the solar energy has no hidden costs," he said. "In fact, installing these plants on rooftops will not require water, coal or land to generate power. There will be no displacement of people to generate electricity. It is a positive move by the government," he added. -- IANS |
Senior executive found dead in Gurgaon
Gurgaon, June 5 The dead man was identified as Anurag, 30. He seemed to have died at least two days ago, the police said. The death came to light when Anurag's neighbour in the Palam Vihar area alerted the police. "He called the police to inform that a bad smell was emanating from his neighbour's house, after which a police team was sent to inspect the spot. The door was locked from inside and had to be broken. Anurag's body was found lying on the bed. It was highly decomposed," said a senior police officer. A forensic team took samples before the body was sent for postmortem. Hailing from Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur town, Anurag worked with IBM as a senior executive and had been staying in Gurgaon for a long time. "Prima facie it appears that the man committed suicide, but we cannot rule out anything because there was a property dispute going on in the family," police sources said. According to the police, Anurag was in depression for the past few months due to the property dispute as well as a financial crisis. -- IANS |
Sale of obscene stuff: high court upholds
censure to SHO
New Delhi, June 5 "The manner in which the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) has scanned the material brought on record is not correct and justified and, therefore, the order passed by the tribunal is not sustainable and, accordingly, we quash the same," the bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Sanjiv Khanna said. Earlier, the tribunal had set aside the punishment of censure, awarded to Harcharan Verma, then SHO of Connaught Place police station, by the disciplinary and appellate authority of the city police. Aggrieved by the CAT's order, the police commissioner approached the High Court saying the order absolving the then SHO was illegal and invalid. Verma was reprimanded following a departmental inquiry which held him accountable for failure to curb the open sale of CDs and VCDs of blue films in the underground Palika Bazar market here. The punishment was upheld by the appellate disciplinary authority of Delhi police, which led to filing of a petition before the tribunal which ordered in favour of Verma. "There is no misconduct on the part of applicant (Verma) and that there is lack of application of mind by the disciplinary and appellate authorities. The impugned orders cannot be sustained," the tribunal had said. The tribunal considered the actions taken by Verma in controlling the sale of obscene CDs and DVDs. "They have not said as to what other steps he (Verma) could have taken... Even the senior officers of Delhi police, including the disciplinary and appellate authorities, could be held responsible for sale of pornographic material and be punished," it said. The High Court, however, set aside the order of the tribunal and upheld the punishment to Verma. |

Position see-saws in politics
by Devi Cherian Jayalalithaa adorns jewellery again and a wide smile greets all after 14 years. The newly sworn in Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaa has been forced to start wearing her ear studs again by her party cadre. Since 1997, Jayalalithaa had given up wearing any piece of jewellery. After the results, her colleagues and party workers requested her to start wearing jewels, and threatened self-immolation over the issue. When her jewellery was seized in the wealth case in 1997 and she was mocked time and again by Sun TV, the AIADMK queen had stopped wearing ornaments altogether. It was to stop the Karunanidhi government any mileage by letting them paint her as a politician who lived in opulence. Now the supremo of Tamil Nadu always has a polite smile to all and no one can find a match for her impeccable mannerism and choosing of correct words at her press conferences. She is a true convent-educated lady with everything in correct order. On the other hand, Karunanidhi didn't celebrate his 88th birthday as his daughter is in jail. A sad Karunanidhi seems to be reflecting on how so much can go wrong so soon. He has lost his election, reputation and the family is in so much trouble. ‘Insecure’ government
Delhiites were shocked at the sight of three Union ministers - Kapil Sibal, Pawan Kumar Bansal and Subodh Kant Sahay -- receiving Baba Ramdev at the Delhi airport on Wednesday and were more surprised to see Pranab Mukherjee later join them for talks at the airport. The yoga guru, having interests in various TV channels, reached the Capital for his 'satyagraha' against black money and corruption. There seems to be a kind of a strategy behind this whole drama. Delhiites are questioning the role of civil society representative Baba Ramdev. Is all this done to take the attention of Anna Hazare's anti-corruption stir? Delhiites feel how every second self-proclaimed civil society representative is going to come to the Capital to go on fast and dharna. What will their life be like? Traffic jams and harassment of the common man by cops too. But what seems to be annoying the public is that their Union government feels so insecure that it has to designate its senior ministers for such a threat. Is it a threat? And why is the government so scared? Or is this a strategy to derail the whole Lokpal Bill? It is sure to boomerang as more and more publicity is given by the media and the UPA-II seems to be just going from bad to worse. Delhiites suffer due to these agitations, but if the message is clear and the demands are based on reasons and ethics, it's fine by them. Some austerity drive!
In UP, Chief Minister Mayawati is obviously taking a cue from the Congress in trying to initiate an austerity drive. But the move has become a joke in the opposition and bureaucracy. There is now a ban on government receptions and dinners at five-star hotels. On New Year or Divali, there is no distribution of calendars, diaries and greetings. There are no ads for publicity by the departments. On the other hand, Madam is spending thousands of crores on memorials and parks. When she moves, there is a fleet of two dozen vehicles and then she expects others to practise austerity. Is this a genuine austerity drive, one wonders. Explaining the necessity for the decision, the Chief Minister said that the implementation of recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission had put a massive burden on the state exchequer. |
