Raja, Balwa in high spirits; Reliance honchos lying low
Sandeep Yadav
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, May 29
After close to three and a half months stay in Tihar, former telecom minister A. Raja and Dynamix Reality (DB) promoter Shahid Balwa, prime accused in 2G spectrum allocation scam, seem to have reconciled to their fate and are now emerging out of their self-imposed isolation. They are seen laughing and playing with other inmates these days.

However, the same cannot be said of three Reliance (ADA Group) senior executives, Gautam Doshi, Hari Nair, Surendra Pipara, also accused in the 2G scam. They are said to be in a state of gloom and brooding inside Jail no. 3 despite over a month of their arrest on April 20. According a police official inside Tihar, the cancellation of trio's bail by the high court on May 23 has further broken them.

"They have been provided with all the facilities ordered by the court like orthopaedic mattress, home food, books, medicines, etc. They have been here close to one and a half months now, but still remain aloof from others and do not participate in any jail activity. The cancellation of their bail plea by the HC seems to have completely broken them," said the official, adding that perhaps old age and various ailments are also contributing to their miseries in jail.

However, in sharp contrast to these, Raja and Balwa, boarding in Jail no.1 seem to be in good spirits. Not only do they interact with other inmates of jail, but also indulge themselves in sports, light-banter, books and canteen food. "The duo leave for court every day in the morning but when they are within the jail, they keep themselves busy in all the available activities--playing badminton, reading books, etc," said a jail official.

According to him, Shahid Balwa, ranked by Forbes as India's 50th richest man in 2010, is a fitness freak and spends close to two hours walking in the morning.

"Shahid just walks and walks inside and outside his cell. He is some kind of a fitness freak and eats a hearty meal too," said the official, adding that the duo also make full use of jail canteen where quality food is available on payment. Shahid and Raja are also making use of the jail library and according to information, A. Raja has recently got issued, Life and Trial of Bhagat Singh by Kuldip Nayar.

"Raja and Shahid Balwa have adapted to jail life and are in a much better frame of mind now. It happens with every new inmate for obvious reasons. However, they are doing fine now," said Sunil Gupta, PRO, Tihar Jail.

A total of 12 of the 14 people chargesheeted by the CBI in the 2G scam, including DMK MP Kanimozhi, director of Swan Telecom Vinod Goenka, managing director of Unitech Wireless (Tamil Nadu) Ltd Sanjay Chandra, are lodged in Tihar Jail this summer.

Meanwhile, Asif Balwa, cousin of Shahid Balwa, arrested in 2G scam, has been refused an ipod inside the jail. He demanded it on the pretext of storing data of 80,000 pages of chargesheet.

According to Sunil Gupta, PRO, Tihar Jail, after consulting with the experts from Apple, jail authorities have come to the conclusion that the ipod can be misused for communication outside.

MCD chief lists steps to check dengue
65 per cent dengue cases reported in the age group of 15 and 45 years
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, May 29
About 65 per cent of the dengue cases reported last year were in the age group of 15 to 45 years, which is attributable to their involvement in outdoor activities, said the MCD commissioner K.S.Mehra today in an analysis of the dengue scenario in the Capital.

Breeding of mosquitoes in work places is a serious concern and so the citizens' cooperation is essential in checking the menace, he said.

He said that all the administrative heads of government and autonomous bodies, educational institutions, commercial establishments, market associations, besides citizens should initiate steps to prevent mosquito breeding.

It has to be ensured that the water tanks of coolers are repainted and changed, if required. Then, all coolers should be cleaned once a week and mopped dry before refilling.

To go further down the list of measures: overhead and other water tanks should be kept properly covered, collection of stagnant water should not be allowed inside or outside office premises.

Empty containers, drums, pots and old tyres, etc. should not be left in the open, disposable plastic/paper cups, glasses and other articles should be disposed of in dustbins.

Recommending the use of the coolers designed by National Centre of Disease Control, he said people should go in for the special coolers instead of conventional room coolers as their use has been recommended by the Directorate of National Vector-Borne Disease Control Programme.

The coolers can be purchased from agencies registered with National Research Development Corporation (NRDC).

Brawl over insect in milk lands 2 in jail

New Delhi, May 29
Two brothers were sentenced to two-year imprisonment by a Delhi court for making an unintentional bid to kill a woman, who had lodged a protest after finding an insect in the milk bought from their dairy.

Additional sessions judge Nisha Saxena passed the order on Sukhpal Singh and Nagender Singh of Govind Vihar in the North East Delhi area after convicting them on charges of making an attempt to commit culpable homicide not amounting to murder under Section 308 of the IPC.

"There is no ground for taking lenient view against the two elder brothers as grievous injuries were voluntarily caused by them to the woman. They are sentenced to simple imprisonment for a period of two years, under charges of attempt to commit culpable homicide," the court said.

It, however, let off their youngest brother Ravinder on probation for a period of two years after warning him against committing any misdeed.

"Convict Ravinder is directed to have good behaviour during probation otherwise he will be called back again to serve the sentence," the court said.

The court's order came on a criminal case, lodged in Gokul Puri police station near Karawal Nagar in May 2007, when Sushila of Govind Vihar bought some milk from her neighbouring dairy, but returned it after she found an insect in it.

The dairy owner brothers refused to own up the responsibility for the insect detected in the milk, the prosecution said, adding that this infuriated the woman, leading to a heated exchange between the two sides.

In her complaint to the police, she alleged that soon after the verbal duel the three dairy owner brothers, along with a fourth person, Sanjay, attacked her with sticks and batons.

The woman sustained grievous injuries and had to be admitted to a nearby hospital, the prosecution told the court.

During the trial, defence counsel contended that the trio were implicated in a false case.

On the day of the incident, the dairy owners had refused to give her milk as she had not cleared her bill for the last two to three months, they said, adding that she got infuriated over this and had an altercation with them.

Later she came back with some self-inflicted injuries and police in tow and got them arrested, the counsel said.

The court, however, rejected the defence plea.

Besides sentencing them, the judge also imposed a fine of Rs 30,000 on them with a direction to pay it to the victim as compensation.--PTI

Chatterati
The way of the political world
'by Devi Cherian

Powers change, equations change and for those who lose, it's not a good scenario. It can be real tough. As Jayalalitha was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, the ripples were felt in Delhi at Tamil Nadu House too.

Karunanidhi's daughter Kanimozhi walked all alone with the luggage in her hand and no assistance or hanger-on came out to drop her to the car after she emptied her Chief Minister's suite. When you are at the bottom, it can be lonely. It is a sad sight to see the sad face of Kanimozhi as the poor thing is not too sure what her fate will be. How long will she be in Tihar? Well, as they say in politics you never know what the future holds for you or how long one is going to rule. It is a proven fact now that the public will not forgive corruption anymore and they cannot be bought at any rate. But she has been on extremely good behaviour and is facing it bravely.Jayalalitha and Mamata are real tough cookies. As one watches them daily now, one cannot help notice that Jayalalitha has taken off her famous cloak which she used to wear as Chief Minister in her last term. She has lost weight and it seems that age has caught up with this famous southern actress.

On the other hand, Mamata Bannerjee now adorns a white chaddar on top of the sari. It was there when she won and it was there when she came to call on Mrs Gandhi. Superstition or just a new style of dressing? While Jayalalitha seems sober and humble, Mamata cannot hide her excitement and is glowing.

Well, during the elections Jayalalitha didn't really have to work hard as she sat in a house in Ooty relaxed and confident that the Tamil Nadu people would throw the corrupt out. Mamata, on the other hand, had been busy fighting the Left till the very end. So lots of fun in the next couple of weeks as they form new alignments with the national leaders at the Centre. It's their time, why not enjoy it while it lasts!

Indians make their mark

There is no doubt that Indians have made it big--quite big internationally. The grand wedding of Britain-based industrialist Pramod Agarwal's daughter, Vinita to Muqit Teja which was hosted in Venice cost a bomb. It was estimated to be around 10 million euros, had about 800 guests and over 72 hours of celebration.

The high point of which was a performance by world renowned Shakira. A flight full of friends and relatives left from Mumbai and

Delhi to solemnize the event, which had even different Indian cuisines.

This is the most talked-about wedding since Lakshmi Mittal's daughter in Paris in 2004. Lakshmi Mittal, the steel tycoon, got Kylie Minogue to croon at the shaadi.

The best and most original part was the 'script' penned by Javed Akhtar, while the music was done by Shankar Mahadevan and the dance moves were choreographed by Farah Khan. Film stars were garlanded here as Shahrukh, Juhi Chawla, Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukherji acted as the members of the family and put together the couple's romance on stage. Akshay Kumar and Aishwarya too danced at this wedding.

High-profile weddings are the flavour of the rich. This March, Delhi and Mumbai socialites/businessmen hosted weddings in Monte Carlo and Monaco, which had performances by artists like Akon.

HC directs PNB to return Rs 1,000-cr securities to DLF

New Delhi, May 29
The Delhi High Court has directed the Punjab National Bank (PNB) to return securities worth Rs 1,000 crore to DLF Limited and slapped a cost of Rs 20,000 on the bank for illegally withholding it.

The securities were withheld by the bank as it wanted the company to pay Rs.20 crore pre-payment charges on a loan.

Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw said, "The attempt of the bank in not releasing securities worth Rs 1,000 crore while its claim against DLF is of Rs 20 crore only, is nothing but an arm twisting practice adopted by loan sharks to compel it to give in to the demand for pre-payment charges."

"The demand of the bank for pre-payment on the loan is found to be without any basis and is quashed. The bank is also directed to return to DLF the securities placed by it with the bank within six weeks," said the court in its order May 27.

The court was hearing the petition filed by DLF, challenging the bank's demand of Rs 20 crore as pre-payment penalty.

"Even though the entire loan amount together with interest due thereon had been remitted by the petitioner and received by the bank, the bank was illegally withholding the securities of the petitioner of over Rs 1,000 crore for the reason of alleged default in payment of pre-payment charges of Rs 20 crore," DLF said in its petition.--IANS

Consumer forum slaps fine of Rs 5 lakh on hospital

Ghaziabad, May 29
A consumer forum here has slapped a fine of Rs 5 lakh to a local hospital on charges of negligence in a case leading to the death of a couple.

Acting on a complaint filed by Manjoor Abbasi in connection with the death of his son, the Consumer Forum chairman A K Srivastava yesterday found Ganesh hospital guilty and directed it to compensate him by paying Rs 5 lakh and an additional amount of Rs 8,000 for the expenses of the case.

The forum also directed the medical establishments in the area to provide first medical aid to the patients rather than to ascertain about the payments of bill.

In 2002, Abbasi's son along with his lover allegedly consumed poison after which they were rushed to the hospital where they were denied treatment as nobody was there to take the responsibility of the payment of treatment.

Both of them were rushed to MMG hospital, but the couple died on the way.--PTI

Congress, INLD to mobilise support from June 1
Ravi S.Singh
Tribune News Service

Faridabad, May 29
The ruling Congress in Haryana and the principal opposition in Haryana Vidhan Sabha, the INLD, have decided to start their political campaigns from June 1.

According to president of the Haryana BJP, Krishan Pal Gurjaar, the state executive of his party will meet by the middle of June to chart out its future course of action in the state. The party will work up a plan in all the districts of the state against the government and expand its support base, especially in the hinterland.

If the mood in the Congress and the INLD was any indication, their proposed campaigns would be fierce.

The Haryana Congress was said to be working on a strategy to further consolidate its base in the state during the course of its ongoing mobilisation campaign for the success of Congress president, Sonia Gandhi's June 1 rally in village Mandi Khera in the adjoining district of Mewat. The president of the Bloc Congress committee, NIT, Faridabad, Neeraj Sharma, while addressing a gathering during his campaign, summed up the mood of the Congress, saying that there was enthusiasm among the public regarding the rally and the event would stand the party in good stead.

Reports reaching here suggest that Congress workers in various parts of the state have fanned out in their areas of influence to garner support for the rally.

The south Haryana, encompassing the districts of Faridabad, Mewat, Palwal, Gurgaon, Rewari and Mahendergarh, has become the centre of the party's campaign.

A senior state functionary of the Congress was of the firm view that the proposed visit of Sonia Gandhi to Haryana would be an icing on the cake for the party as it was already placed well on account of the 'clean' image of Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

Many senior Congress leaders, including cabinet ministers assert that the momentum of the campaign among the masses would continue even after the visit of their party leader.

On the other side, the INLD has placed each district in the state under the charge of a senior party functionary for the success of its monthlong "mass awareness" campaign, commencing from June 1.

A senior party leader said that functionaries would visit 15 villages in the assigned districts to them every day.

According to him, the party would highlight the alleged failures of the Congress government in Haryana during its awareness campaign.
