Firm accuses ex-director of data theft
Sandeep Yadav
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, May 22
International Panaacea Limited (IPL), a Delhi-based biotechnology company, which is engaged in development and commercialisation of various agro-biotech products like fertilisers and pesticides, has accused its former director Dr Paikray Sitaram Prasad of criminal breach of trust, data theft and infringement of copyright.

As per the FIR lodged in this connection, IPL president Mahesh Rajput had alleged that while working with IPL Dr Prasad floated his own parallel company in conspiracy with six other IPL staff members, with the name of M/s Care-Pro Bio Science Pvt Ltd, and stole a large collection of potential strains/cultures from the IPL research labs which had huge commercial value as these could be used for the formulation of high CFU count bio-fertilisers and bio-pesticides.

The matter came to notice when Dr Prasad after quitting IPL allegedly approached M/s Biotech International Ltd to contemplate an agreement with them to provide these potential strains and proprietary production process.

An FIR in this regard was originally registered under Sections 379 and 420 of the IPC at the Barakhama Raod police station on February 26 but the case was later transferred to the economic offences wing of the Delhi police in April.

"A comprehensive investigation is required in such matter involving the theft of scientific research materials or other white collar crimes. The investigation is still in preliminary stages," said a senior police official from economic offences wing when asked about their findings in the case. Explaining the intricacies involved, the official said the case itself pertained to a period of more than 10 years since the main accused, Dr Prasad, joined IPL in September 2000, and then allegedly formed his own companies somewhere in 2005-06, and few years later IPL realising about the theft of its research material and finally register an FIR this year.

"All these things will take time to investigate and would even require the help of experts in the field of bio-technology to assist us. We are working on it," said the official.

As per IPL, the development of strains/culture requires huge investment in the form of a well-equipped laboratory, a well-qualified technical team and several years of time involving large scale field trials required to establish the research and its commercial viability.

"However, Dr Prasad has neither infrastructure nor time to establish the strains/cultures that he claims to have in possession. This clearly establishes that he misappropriated the same while he was in the employment of the company," says the FIR pointing out that balancesheet of Dr Prasad's company, filed with the registrar of the company, shows that the company has never spent any fund on the R&D. IPL has accused that Dr Prasad has caused a loss of around Rs 50 lakh to the company.

Driver arrested for stealing consignment worth Rs 11 lakh
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, May 22
The southeast district police has claimed to have busted a gang of criminals who used to steal consignments of transporters by working with them as drivers. The mastermind, Hare Ram, alias Ajay, had obtained employment with a transporter on fake name and address.

According to the police, the matter came to light when Dinesh Prajapati, manager of M/S PICL India Pvt. Ltd. Sector 6, Faridabad, reported to it that one of their consignments that had electric motors for air conditioners had gone missing. The consignment was meant for export to Dubai.

"The consignment was dispatched on January 31, 2011, but it did not reach the destination. Later, the container was found half empty and abandoned. Half of the consignment worth over Rs 11 lakh was missing. The driver of the container, Ajay, and the cleaner were untraceable. The transporter feared that they both might have been killed by some robbers," said a senior police official.

The police tried to establish Ajay's whereabouts on the basis of the identity proof submitted by him to his employer.

"During investigation, the police learnt that a man named Hare Ram, a resident of Balia (UP), matched the descriptions of Ajay. Ram was known as Moocchad because of his big mustache. The police learnt that he was not seen for long. It also learnt that he had presented himself before a court in UP regarding a case and was lodged in a jail. Then, the Delhi police with the permission of the court brought Ram to Delhi on a production warrant.

DU students spend vacation doing internship

New Delhi, May 22
Even as their examinations come to an end, students at Delhi University do not seem to be resting, as most of them are looking forward to their summer internships. And the craze is getting bigger by the year with companies now approaching colleges with internship opportunities.

Be it fashion, television, production, writing, sales, restaurants, retail stores, amusement parks, there is something for everyone. Also, students with a creative bent join theatre groups or dance production houses for short terms.

Students say that in most cases they make a quick buck, gain experience, get a taste of professional life and in the worst scenario, at least end up with an internship certificate that will help them while applying for higher studies.

"I commute from Ghaziabad to North Campus everyday for college. All my time goes into travelling and I cannot take part in any extra curricular activities during the college days. Staying back after college hours wasn't an option. But I recently auditioned for a musical show by the National School of Drama and was selected. The rehearsals will take place during the summer vacation and the show will be staged in July. I will be getting a participation certificate and brilliant references for my college applications later," said Mishtha Mahabir, an English (hons) student from Lady Shri Ram College.

Students can always experiment during internships. As a trend, a lot of humanities stream and even commerce stream students have been interning with media houses to gain experience in diverse fields. Whatever be the internship, students end up making brilliant professional contacts and have a blast during the internship, learning at the same time.

For over three years now, big corporations like Google India have been visiting Lady Shri Ram College and Sri Ram College of Commerce, among others, for hiring interns for 30 -50 days.

During the internship, the students get stipend money, apart from travel allowance and even living arrangements at the company guesthouses. Several media houses, including publishing houses, newspapers and TV channels have also been hiring interns during the summer vacations.

This year, many students have already appeared for the entrances and auditions for internships.

"The scanning process is essential. Interns are very useful to any organisation. They are young minds, who are always enthusiastic to work. It is a brilliant experience to have interns in office. However, every company needs to select interns according to their capabilities and aptitude so that their skills are explored to the fullest," said Sashee Singh, MD, Tarmaic Affairs Public Relations Company.

The pleasant weather in the Capital continued today, making for a perfect weekend for the Delhiites. The Capital woke up to a bright and pleasant day as heavy showers last night brought the mercury levels down.

The minimum temperature settled five degrees below the average for this time of season at 20.7 degree Celsius, while the maximum temperature settled seven degrees below the average at 32.4 degree Celsius.

"The city saw heavy winds and thundershowers in many parts. Light inconsistent rain spells continued throughout the day. The sky remained partly cloudy with no sign of sun," an IMD official said.

The national Capital received 19.3 mm of rainfall between 12 midnight and 8.30 am today morning, added the official.

From 8.30 am till 5.30 pm today evening, the department recorded mere 0.2 mm rainfall.

The weather today made for a good day out for the residents who otherwise would have sneaked out of the city to escape the heat.

"We were initially planning to go to McLeod Ganj for the weekend. But the weather here is so beautiful today that the city is nothing less than a hill station, especially at night when it rains along with fast winds. We had a beautiful time in Delhi itself. But now I dread the heat that will inevitably return in a couple of days," said Eesha Singh, a senior copywriter with a Delhi-based advertising agency.

The humidity level today was recorded at 76 per cent.

For tomorrow, the weather department has predicted a rise in the temperatures.

"The temperatures will rise now. As of now, we do not expect any more thundershower spells in the Capital. Still, the sky will remain partly cloudy. The maximum and the minimum temperatures are likely to oscillate between 37 and 23°C," said the official.

The weather conditions would soon normalise and the heat will be back by the end of the week. The day after tomorrow, the maximum temperature is expected to touch the 40-degree mark.

Tribune News Service

Gurgaon, May 22
In an attempt to create awareness about vaginal hysterectomy surgical procedure, Columbia Asia Hospital, in collaboration with Gurgaon Obstetrics and Gynecology Society (GOGS), conducted a first-of-its-kind live surgery workshop at the hospital here today.

Nearly 60 consultants from different parts of the national capital region (NCR) participated in the workshop. A team of experts, led by the GOGS president, Dr Ragni Agrawal, operated upon five patients during the event.

The surgeries, conducted free of cost using the latest technology, were projected live on a big screen for the benefit of the visiting doctors.

"Advancement in medical science today offers patients with a simpler process and a quick recovery. The objective of the event was to enhance the surgical skills of the gynecologists and popularise vaginal hysterectomy as a surgical procedure," Dr Agrawal said and added that all surgeries were successful.

She said vaginal hysterectomy is a procedure in which the uterus is surgically removed through the vagina. One or both ovaries and fallopian tubes may also be removed during the procedure as well. A vaginal approach may be used if the uterus is not greatly enlarged, and if the reason for the surgery is not related to cancer.

"Studies have shown that vaginal hysterectomy has fewer complications, requires a shorter hospital stay, and allows a faster recovery as compared to removal of the uterus through an abdominal incision (abdominal hysterectomy)," the doctor added.

Rahul learns to steal the limelight
by Devi Cherian

It is now apparent that Rahul Gandhi has finally learnt that the media is not as bad as he thought it was. Things seem to have changed after Greater Noida. In the past whenever Rahul saw a TV crew, he got nervous and his body language was quite unfriendly. The young Gandhi seems to have realized the power of the media. The same night when the Rapid Action Force took over the village, it surprised the waiting Rahul and the media. Then Rahul's body language was the biggest surprise for all. He was friendly to the cameras, lingering long enough for them to get a good footage of the arrest and even stopped with his entourage to give them interesting sound bytes.

Later, too, when he called on the Prime Minister with farmers, he himself walked up to the mikes and fielded questions. Looks like the reticent Rahul has learnt to steal the limelight after realising that other politicians make more noise and work less. In fact, it is Maya Behenji who has not given any media bytes after this incident.

Tweeting all the rage

Tweeting seems to be a big thing amongst the politicians. It can do a lot of good, but on the other hand it can damage in a way which can leave you scarred for a long time.

Shashi Tharoor was one example of tweeting which went wrong for an intelligent man. The older lot of politicians, the seasoned ones, do not believe in tweeting or in other words we could say that they are not so savvy with the high-tech Blackberrys and I-Pads. It is a great way of communication for socializing.

Sushma Swaraj's tweeting on the 'Kashmir Chalo' on 15th August raised some controversies. Omar Abdullah's tweeting at times has raised many eyebrows. But Omar's tweet on the Rahul Gandhi's pillion-ride to Noida had many burst into laughter.

The comments were "Anyone taking bets on how quickly Mayawati come out with her handbag swinging," he said in a tweet. He also had time to "welcome back" a television anchor who he "missed".

"Hey welcome back. I'd say you were missed, but someone will tell me I'm flirting so will just say - you were missed," the Chief Minister tweeted.

"If I were Rahul I'd commission a statue of Mayawati and garland it every year on the 11th of May for this huge political favour she's done."

These tweets were so funny.

It is good to have politicians those who can tweet in a humorous yet sensible way. In fact, it's good to see this side of politicians too.

Vijender walks down the aisle

Our Haryanvi boxer met his match, wooed her and married her quickly. Olympic bronze medalist boxer Vijender Singh wed Delhi girl Archana Singh in a small and private ceremony on Tuesday afternoon.

Even though the media was more or less kept away from the actual ceremony, the shutterbugs and reporters surrounded the gates of the Safdarjung Flying Club for a glimpse of simpleton Vijender's family, friends and a few high-profile guests who came to congratulate the couple.

As the wedding ceremony ended, Vijender Singh and his newlywed wife Archana came outside and posed for the cameras. Vijender looked handsome and cool in an off-white sherwani designed by Manav Gangwani who was also a guest at the wedding. The decorations were grand and beautiful.

The bride's father has been an old associate of Congress leader Satish Sharma. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also attended the wedding.
