CM tells discoms to ensure uninterrupted power supply
New Delhi, May 15 She also told the discoms to pull up their socks to provide reliable and satisfactory power supply to all parts of the city and attend to all local faults by making their complaint centres more effective and responsive. Besides, she informed the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) that all arrangements had been made to ensure equitable distribution of water. She also told the board that ample number of tankers had been deployed to supply clean drinking water to the localities which were not covered by the pipeline supply. Dikshit instructed the discoms to provide back up power supply to the DJB wherever required. The Chief Minister issued the instruction at a meeting held to review the power and water situation in the Capital. At the meet, it was stated that the average peak power demand form May 9 to May 14 was 4,421 MW against the availability of 4,637 MW. The DJB has also been asked to work in tandem with the discoms to co-ordinate the hours of water supply. The DJB will also keep track on the movements of water tankers. The DJB and discoms have been told to come out with advertisements underlining the need of conservation and judicious consumption of water and electricity. The advertisements will also have telephone numbers of their complaint centres and senior officers. |
BJP protests against petrol price hike
New Delhi, May 15 Condemning the hike of petrol price, Delhi BJP today took out rallies at five important places. Tomorrow the rallies will be held at 14 prominent places and later, the traffic will also be jammed to pressurise the government to rollback the hiked price of the fuel, said Vijender Gupta at a conference. He said just after the conclusion of the election process in five states, the UPA government had imposed a big burden of price spiral on the people. The government, which had been promising to end the suffering of the people, had made steep hike of Rs 5 per litre in the price of petrol on the very next day of the result of the election. The Congress which came to power in the name of common man is looting the people. Eight months ago the UPA government had allowed the public sector oil company to fix the rate and as a result within the last eight months the prices of oil has been increased eight times and this increase comes to Rs 15 per litre. Today, an average price of petrol in the country is about Rs 70 per litre. The government is also indicating that the prices of diesel, kerosene and cooking gas will be increased shortly. Out of Rs 70, the government recovered about Rs 35 as tax on the sale of petrol. If the government would have thought genuinely for the aam aadmi, it would have cut the tax on petrol in place of increasing the price in the interest of people. The government which is busy in "corruption, price spiral and loot of public money", has no time to think in the interest of people, he said. Today at Patel Nagar, Khajoori Chowk, Naveen Shahdara, outer Delhi and Najafgarh the BJYM took out rallies and staged demonstration. Tomorrow at 14 prominent places of the city, including Chandni Chowk and Ghanta Ghar, the BJP will take out the rallies. |
Industry bodies take on Mayor Abbi
New Delhi, May 15 The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), which the Mayor heads, has failed to take care of the roads and sewerage in the industrial estates, said the apex body representing several industry associations. There are 22 industrial areas spread over Delhi, the biggest of them in Bawana, Narela, Okhla and Patparganj. The apex body has demanded that the MCD should give charge of the maintenance of all the industrial areas to the Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corp (DSIIDC), which is ready for the PPP mode. The industrialists' reaction follows Abbi's statement that all 22 industrial estates are the assets of the MCD and the Delhi government cannot transfer them to private players for maintenance. Alleging that the Delhi government had failed to provide the MCD required funds, Abbi said it was not possible for us to maintain and provide the required standard of civic services in the industrial estates. The industry associations have pointed out to the Mayor that it was on their request that the Delhi government decided to give responsibility of maintaining the industrial areas to the DSIIDC. "We, the industrial units, have good experience of privatisation of distribution of power through Discoms and we expect the same kind of results on the PPP model for the maintenance activities also," said the apex
chamber. |
Bhatta Parsaul
Greater Noida, May 15 Most of the people have fled from the villages and their relatives in nearby
villages are too scared to come forward to stand surety for those lodged in jail. The women folks are just not conversant with the legal and police procedures to help their detained men folks. Even nine days after the violence took place, dead silence prevails in the villagesof the district. Either men have not returned home or they are just not stepping out from homes out of the police fear. After the violence, the police had arrested a large number of people from the villages, including Bittu, Bijender, Umesh, Anand, Holey, Ankit, Kalu, Rahul, Shaukeen, Shauqat, Asha Ram, Akhtar, Inderjit, Raj Kumar, Naushad, Bhura, Satveer, Jaipal, Chanderbhan, Kalicharan, Rattan Singh, and Om Pal. They are all lodged in Dasna jail near Ghaziabad. They are waiting for someone to stand guarantee for them. In some families two or even three male members are in jail. Two persons are needed to stand guarantee for the bail of one person. Rauti Prasad, Satender and Jai Veer, members of a family, said six persons from their families were presently in jail. "Where can we find 12 persons to stand surety for them? We do not have enough people in the village to stand guarantee for our people presently lodged in jail,” said Rauti Prasad. |
HC Order: Fate of land under acquisition hangs in balance
Noida, May 15 The decisions of the Allahabad High Court have also raised question on the fate of the land presently under the acquisition process by the development authorities. There are large chunks of land in UP which have not been acquired yet, but the process of acquisition has been set in motion. The process is understood to have been speeded up now. Meanwhile, the spearheading farmers' movements have warned that there are about 150 villages like Bhatta Parsaul where the current of discontent is high. Farmers' leaders have warned that each such village has the potential to explode into Bhatta-like movement, if the farmers are not heard early by the authorities. The high court had set aside the acquisition of 70 hectares of land acquired by the Greater Noida Authority because the authority had not invited objections from the farmers nor had heard them. This land is said to belong to 150 families and has not yet been allotted to any firm so far. On Thursday, the high court had set aside acquisition of 150 hectare of land which had already been allotted to leading real estate firms in the Noida Extension area. The only way, according to legal experts, is that the government can issue a fresh notice, inviting objection from the farmers and then go ahead with the acquisition process afresh. The previous notification, which has been quashed now, was issued in 2009. Farmers of several villages, including Gulistapur, Hazrtapur, Khapkheda, Sudna Khurd and Vaidpura, have also moved the court, seeking similar relief. In April, the Supreme Court had quashed the acquisition of 205 hectare of agricultural land in Gautam Budh Nagar. |
DU student volunteers happy to help freshers
New Delhi, May 15 Every year, thousands of students register as volunteers to help their colleges during the admission season. This year, apart from the senior students, several colleges have invited their ex-students to guide the new comers during the interactive sessions. "As a tradition, every year, one day before the classes begin, we organise an orientation day. This year, we have invited our ex-students to participate in the session. Volunteers are appointed on the basis of the strength of every department. But we try that one volunteer is present for every 10 to 15 applicants. From explaining the formalities, to help them understand the logistics of the course, volunteers guide the freshers in every possible ways," said Shraddha Joshi, admission in charge, administration block, Jesus and Mary College. Volunteers are required as teachers already have too much to do, including completing the admission-related formalities, counselling new applicants, invigilating during the entrance exams, checking the papers and much more. And so when it comes to giving personal attention to all applicants, volunteers come in handy. "There are outstation candidates. Some have language barrier. It's easier for us to speak to them and help them overcome their inhibitions. At times, it's very important to explain them about the quota rules. Many SC/ST and OBC students approach volunteers and we direct them to the person concerned. Since we have gone through the same ordeal during our admissions, we are glad to help the freshers," said Malvika Khanna, head of a team of volunteers at Lady Shri Ram College. Like last year, the dean of students' welfare office will also select volunteers and operate a phoneline that will cater to all the queries of the applicants. This year, the number of volunteers is likely to be increased. The Delhi University Student Union (DUSU) has also come up with a comprehensive plan to assist students during the admission process and their first few months on the campus. The DUSU will come out with a detailed information booklet that will give information of all the colleges and other facilities available on the campus. "A five-member team is preparing the information booklet which will have information and maps of all colleges. Besides, the booklet will have detail information about the Metro routes around the colleges, eating joints within and around the campus, hostel facilities in colleges and information on PG accommodations. Students can collect the booklet from the DUSU office and the 16 information centers where the centralised admission forms will be sold," said Jitender Chaudhary, president, DUSU. |
Revised toll tax from today
New Delhi, May 15 According to the new toll tax rates, taxis and autos would have to pay Rs 45, buses and trucks Rs 85, six-wheelers Rs 165, 10-wheelers Rs 330 and 14-wheelers Rs 820. The earlier rates were Rs 35, Rs 70, Rs 140, Rs 280 and Rs 820, respectively. The MCD has been offered Rs 936 crore against the new contract for toll tax collection for three years. This is 62.5 per cent more than the existing contract of Rs 563 crore. Close to 22 lakh commercial vehicles enter Delhi per month. "In addition to that, we will issue smart cards, which will work on computerised toll plazas only. These will be issued to interested commuters at the same discount rates and structure as relevant to the pass holders," said Subhash Arya, leader of the Standing Committee. However, no toll tax will be payable or collected from ambulances, fire fighting vehicles, police and government vehicles having red and amber lights, and defense vehicles. "Any specified commercial vehicle found entering Delhi without the payment of toll tax, will be punishable with penalty prescribed for such type of vehicles, as per the Toll Tax By-Laws. The Supreme Court had directed that no vehicles would ply on inter-state routes by passing through Delhi or New Delhi," said Arya. |

Congress leaders are getting apprehensive about travelling in small aircraft. There seems to be a jinx, they say. Many of their young high flying leaders have had their lives cut off. The list includes Madhav Rao Scindia, YSR Reddy, Chief Minister of Andhra and the most recent case of the CM of Arunachal. Haryana leaders like Surinder Singh and industrialist O.P. Jindal also died in a helicopter crash. Amarinder Singh's helicopter has had to do many crash-landings. The question that is being asked is whether these small aircraft are safe enough for these big leaders. Is it the aircraft or is the experience of pilots who very often do not have the skills of other senior professionals? The other big issue, of course, is that these leaders are often in a hurry and insist on flying even when the weather conditions or aircraft specifications are not ideal for the journey. Safety norms are often thrown to the winds. It is more often the young, the energetic and those with a penchant for mass public contact who push themselves too far. So, within the top Congress circles this anxiety is doing the rounds in whispers and one wonders if the party will issue a diktat for more caution and care for those constantly in the air. Violent deaths up
The number of young people dead due to violent crimes is escalating in more cities, but more so in and around Delhi. This new wave of fatal violence is the result of unfortunate, unacceptable or unrequited love, often at a very tender age. Both these aspects of modern youth culture -- high levels of passion and high levels of violence -- are encouraged and enhanced by new age movies, music videos and other elements of popular culture that the young are influenced by more and more. With the breakdown of family values and the compression of family time, the youth turn to easily available forms of entertainment that influence them. But it's the senseless violence that is causing concern among the authorities, parents and educationists. Going home from a mall is no longer a safe neighbourhood activity. Returning home from school can expose you to a sudden attack. Whether it is murder, kidnap or an acid attack, the results are often horrific, both on the families and the immediate circle of friends. What is worse is that all this seems to happen in full public view with very little sense of fear of discovery. Gudda’s birthday bash
The 50th birthday bash for the king of fashion Rohit Bal was as dramatic as the designer's fashion shows are. The theme "Chadti Jawani" was apt for the blonde Kashmiri birthday boy. All guests were requested to wear cutouts of Gudda's face, much to his amusement. The party carried on the whole night at 'Cibo', a restaurant at Hotel Janpath which has Gudda's personal touches to its interiors. Gudda is undoubtedly the pride of the Indian fashion world. The cake was fun too as his buddies had got him a champagne bottle cake filled Gudda Chandon. Right from the French Ambassador to Varun Behl and many others from the fashion fraternity danced and wined the night through. |
