Shobhit murder: Friends being questioned
New Delhi, May 7 Shobhit had gone out with his friends, including two girls on Thursday evening but was found injured with wounds and died on his way to hospital. "We have formed seven police teams to investigate the matter. We are questioning the victim's friends as he had a huge circle of friends. He was with five of his friends till 9 on Thursday night at the DLF Promenade mall," said a police officer. The victim was a second year information technology student at Manav Rachna University in Faridabad and an alumnus of Delhi Public School, R K Puram. While the police is silent over the issue, saying that it is investigating, a special staff of the Delhi police probing the case claimed that they are hopeful to nab the killers in a day or two. The investigative officer also said that the best friend of Shobhit, living
in the neighbourhood, was questioned. "He has given some leads and we are working on them. We can't disclose anything," said the officer. The police said that after analysing his call records, it was found that Shobhit had been in constant touch with at least four female students on the day he was murdered. He had four wounds, one on the chest, another in the abdomen and two in the back. Shobhit was found stumbling towards gate number three of C-5 Vasant Kunj around 9.50 pm on Thursday. When he slumped on the car barrier and did not move, a security guard initially thought the youth was drunk. "It was raining and there was no power there. Shobhit's i-phone rang and
the guard picked it," the official said. The guard informed the caller, a girl, about Shobhit lying at the gate, who then informed Shobhit's parents. Shobhit's father Suraj Modi rushed along with his elder son Rohit and took the bleeding youth to Fortis Hospital where he was declared brought dead. The police has found that Shobhit left his house at 4.30 pm in an Alto car with a driver. "They reached the DLF Promenade mall where he met his five friends, including the girl. Around 6.30 pm, he went home to collect his wallet and returned to the mall. He sent his driver away, saying he would call if he needed him," said the officer. The closed-circuit television footages from the mall showed him with a girl around 9 p.m. after which Shobhit called his mother to inform her that he was coming home in 20 minutes, the officer said. |
3 held for killing 87-yr-old man
New Delhi, May 7 According to the police, the accused have been identified as Rajesh Kumar Chaudhry (34), a driver at the house of victim Om Prakash for the past 10 years, his brother-in-law Mahesh Chaudhry (21) and a juvenile originally from Darbhanga in Bihar. "All of them were in need of money, particularly Rajesh, who was constructing his house in Faridabad and had asked for Rs 50, 000 as loan from the victim's family, but they had declined," said a police officer. The dismayed by the refusal, Rajesh decided to loot the house and kill Om Prakash if needed. As per plan, Rajesh, with the help of the juvenile servant entered the house and strangled Prakash before getting away with around Rs 3 lakh in cash, two laptops and jewellery. The victim was a retired government employee and a resident of East Patel Nagar in west Delhi. |
CM meets Sonia
New Delhi, May 7 Several Congressmen, who were recently appointed as aldermen to the MCD, also accompanied Dikshit to the meeting with Gandhi. Aggarwal said it was a courtesy call as the newly appointed aldermen had wanted to seek blessings of the party chief. Delhi Lt Governor Tejinder Khanna last month had appointed 10 persons, most of them are Congress workers, as aldermen to the MCD. An alderman is a member of a municipal assembly or council who is not elected by popular vote. The nomination is generally done at the beginning of the term of a corporation. The meeting comes at a time when the CM has been attacked by a section within the Congress for her proposal to split the MCD into five smaller bodies ahead of next year's municipal polls. Apparently, Aggarwal is opposed to the move as he feels dividing the MCD would badly affect the Congress in the municipal polls. |
More Kendriya Bhandars in govt colonies
New Delhi, May 7 The matter has been discussed with the minister of food and supplies and managing director of Kendriya Bhandar. l formalities for commissioning them would be completed at the earliest and this would go a long way in making available essential commodities at the doorsteps of the residents, she added. The meeting attended by office-bearers of various RWAs is the first of the sessions that the government has decided to hold with RWAs, traders' associations in New Delhi localities in a phased manner. Among the major demands of the RWAs were construction/strengthening of boundary walls of the colonies and installation of security gates. |
Barred from exams, Jamia students on hunger strike
New Delhi, May 7 These students claim that they have medical certificates to support their absence, but the director, Obaid Siddiqui, has discarded all the certificates, including those of the students with a history 6 to 12 years of illness, as fake. Saba Rehman a student sitting on hunger strike, said, "The biggest injustice is that all these students have secured the minimum required attendance of 60 per cent and have been refused the 15 per cent medical relaxation, which has been allowed by an ordinance of the university. Many of these students have history of serious medical problems, but our director refuses to consider this." Students say that after trying hard to convince the administration and filing applications and representations to the vice chancellor, the students had moved the court. "The students, after having tried everything possible internally, had moved the Delhi High Court. But the court dismissed their petitions on the basis of an earlier petition that it had dismissed. However, it did sympathise with the students as it could see the mess created by the university administration. In fact, Justice Kailash Gambhir advised the students to approach a higher court. But the students have lost all hopes and feel discriminated as the university seems to be having strict rules for some students while bending the rules for others," said Nabila Zehra Zaidi, a student at the university. Interestingly, the Delhi High Court order says, "In Clause 2.2 of the Ordinance 15(XV), in case of an illness, the university has prescribed a period of two weeks for the submission of medical certificates by a student after resuming class. But this rule is not being strictly observed either by the students or the university. The explanation given by the university is that it entertains the medical certificates even at the fag end of the session so that the students should not have any grievances. The university, by entertaining medical certificates at the fag end, is itself creating a kind of indiscipline in the university, besides defying its own rules." Another student suffering from the university's alleged highhanded attitude is Arhan Sett. Sett, who suffers from acute migraine, has secured 65 per cent attendance. Zaidi said that Justice Gambhir had directed the students to move a representation before the vice chancellor. "When the students finally got to meet the VC, he had some interesting observations. According to him, if a student is ill, he/she should not join the university and if a student is financially not stable, he/she should not enter the university without a scholarship. His statement to the students is a clear violation of their right to education," Zaidi. "Due to the unresponsive attitude of the Jamia administration, students today began an indefinite hunger strike and this will continue till our demands are met," says Nabila. |
No helmet, no petrol in
Noida!
Noida, May 7 District magistrate of Gautam Budh Nagar Deepak Agarwal, said "A large number of deaths in accidents in the district happen because two-wheeler drivers do not wear helmets. Keeping this in mind, we have decided to launch the drive, 'no helmet no petrol', in the city. At a meeting with the petrol pump owners, we have instructed them to sell petrol only to those two-wheeler drivers who wear helmets. We are also planning to conduct seminars in colleges to make the youth more aware about the traffic rules," Agarwal said. To publicise the drive, a copy of the order will be pasted on the notice boards of various institutes and colleges across the district. There are 87 management and engineering colleges in Greater Noida and most of the students studying in these institutes avoid wearing helmets, leading to fatalities. The order follows a study conducted by the Noida police, which has revealed that every 36 hours, a person dies and three get injured on the city roads. Most of these victims are those riding two-wheelers without helmets. |
MCD suspends two for not marking attendance
New Delhi, May 7 Commissioner KS Mehra placed under suspension Arun Kumar and Rajesh of the Karol Bagh zone after they were found not marking their attendance on bio-metric machine, though they were present on the location. The commissioner had carried out a surprise check in the Karol Bagh zone by the director of the Enforcement Cell and his team. "During the checking, it was found that some substitute safai karamcharies were not marking their attendance on the bio-metric machine, though they were present on the location. All the machines were found functional. The ASIs concerned could not explain the reasons for not ensuring that the substitute employees mark their attendance on the machine," said a senior official. Singh sabha to contest all 46 seats
New Delhi, May 7 It will field its candidates from all the 46 seats in Delhi. Earlier, the KGSS had alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal (Delhi-UK). But today it distanced from the SAD (Delhi-UK) on the policy matters and took the pledge to fill up vacuum of good leadership that the community needs. It will pick up competent people from the community to contest the election so that all the religious as well as educational institutions of the gurdwara committee can be managed properly. At present, the standard of education in schools run by the committee has gone down. Marwah said any Akali Dal or any Sikh leader who agreed with the policies of the KGSS could join it with an aim to work for the welfare of the community. He demanded from the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee to make a documentary of works done by Baba Harbans Singh who devoted his life for the cause of the Sikhs. He died in Delhi a few days back. An historic building should be named after Baba Harbans Singh ji. He also demanded the details of Rs 350 crore being collected by the committee president, Paramjeet Singh Sarna, for the construction of the parking lot on the premises of Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib. How the budget for the construction of the lot has increased from Rs 50 to Rs 350 crore without discussing it ? The president alone does not have power to take the decision, he said. He also said while constructing the parking lot, the committee should take care of of the gurdwara. If it was damaged, the KGSS members would come forward to stop the damage. They would not tolerate any damage done to the historic parts of the gurdwara, he added. |

Delhi Diary In a dense court room packed with journos, lawyers, police and the entire 2 G spectrum accused along with their family members during the bail plea hearing of DMK MP Kanimozhi, the atmosphere was as tense as it could be. With one of country's sharpest legal minds Ram Jethmalani defending Kanimozhi and his lone voice roaring through the court, everybody seemed nervous especially A.Raja and Shahid Balwa. Balwa was chewing gum all through the day with gloom writ large on his face. However, there came a cheerful moment when even the duo could not help smiling. Jethmalani was half-way through his argument when a mobile in the court room came alive with a ring tone "pehli pehli baar mohabbat ki hai…" to be heard loud and clear through the length and breadth of the court. While Jethmalani and the judge frowned, all the others, including Balwa and Raja, could not help but burst into smiles, albeit with their heads down. DMC lists achievements
There was complete silence at a meeting of the National Minorities Commission held a few days ago when the Delhi Minorities Commission The DMC started explaining its achievements and schemes of the city government. Among them is fee reimbursement of poor students of minorities enrolled with the public schools under the scheme of the economically weaker section. The fee of as many as 39,400 students was reimbursed by the social welfare department of the minorities, Delhi government. DMC popularized this scheme. With the help of Baru Sahib, a charitable educational institution of Sikhs, pamphlets and leaflets were distributed in the communities. Consequently, thousands of people thronged the department concerned for getting the benefit. The government had allocated only Rs 9 lakh under the scheme, but having seen the rush of needy students, it arranged for Rs 28 crore. Sikkim studies
at Jamia
Sikkim Studies Programme is indeed a welcome addition to the Northeast Studies Programme at Jamia Millia Islamia. It has been Jamia's endeavour to strengthen students' understanding of the northeast. Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Chamling and Jamia vice-chancellor Najeeb Jung are the brain behind this scheme. The areas of focus under the scheme are green governance, including climate change and its impact; critical issues before small states; social stress and coping mechanisms. Jamia has a Northeast Studies Centre to play the role of a leading research and documentation centre for the region and as a "think tank" for the academic community and policy makers. It also aims to provide an alternative platform to the region. Hard to rein in encroachers
Encroachment remains a big challenge for the civic bodies in the city. While the DDA was recently termed as 'Delhi Destruction Authority' by the Supreme Court for failing to check large-scale encroachments on public land, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, looking after 90 per cent of the area of the city, has also failed to control the menace even after taking several measures. However, the NDMC claims to have removed 26,866 temporary encroachments by hawkers and squatters in a report highlighting its efforts between April 2010 and April 2011. The civic body states that it has raised Rs 36 lakh from fines levied on encroachers. (Contributed by Sandeep Yadav, Syed Ali Ahmed, Charu Singh, Himani
