86-yr-old strangled in house, robbed
New Delhi, May 3 "Sharma had been living alone after his wife expired. When the incident took place, Sharma was talking to his daughter Poonam who lives in Rajender Nagar. Poonam told us that she heard the bell ring, after which her father opened the door. But then the phone got disconnected and despite her repeated calls, nobody picked up the phone, following which she called the police," said a police official. According to the officer, Poonam has reported loss of jewellery and cash around Rs 3 lakh from her father's residence. The preliminary investigations of the police suggest that the killer wa known to Sharma as his entry was friendly. "We are working on some clues, but we cannot reveal them now. All I can say now is that someone known to Sharma is behind the crime," said the official. |
Have worked very hard for CWG, dont blame us: PWD officers
New Delhi, May 3 Contracts were given to those who had politically well connected, said a senior engineer in the PWD. The investigating agencies - CBI, CAG, CVC and Shunglu Committee - do not see under which condition the engineers and officers had got done the work. Even in foreign countries flyovers like Barapulla elevated road takes three years to complete, but here the PWD was given only 18 months. It was totally marshal land but experts entered the drain to check the quality of soil and got the work done. For more than a year they had no weekly offs and other leaves. All leaves were cancelled. An executive engineer said he had postponed the marriage ceremony of his son as he could not spare time for the preparations. But in return their credibility is being suspected. There names are framed in the FIR. Another senior officer said instead of discussing next project, his colleagues discuss the news items appeared in the newspapers in connection with the PWD projects and chalk out plan to make themselves safe. "Had I been known that such hue and cry will be there after the games, I would have not got my son married. What the newly married wife of my son will think of me. When I discuss the issue at home, my family members console me saying that nothing will happen against me. God will protect me. Frankly speaking, nowadays life has become hell," he said. "We have been busy for the past six months in preparing reply of the CVC and the Shunglu Committee reports that questioned the quality of the material used in the projects and misuse of money in the construction. Now the CAG report will be made public within a few months and again we will prepare reply. There is no agency to listen our grievances," he added. |
65% girls stalked once: Survey
Noida, May 3 Stalking means the willful and repeated following, watching and harassing the person. And the purpose is to attempt to force a relationship with someone who is unwilling or otherwise. Stalking victims are at risk of psychological trauma and physical harm. Common emotional consequences of stalking include depression, anxiety, loss of self-esteem, shame, hopelessness and vulnerability. Rejected stalker is a former romantic partner or friend of the victim with whom she has ended relationship or intends to do end relationship. The resentful stalker views the target as being similar to those who have oppressed and humiliated him in the past. "Not only the school or college girls, but young working women also complain of stalking by colleagues," said PP Sharma, general secretary, Association of Greater Noida Industries. The Noida police today launched a week-long anti-eve-teasing drive. Women and girls were appealed to give the location of the eve-teasing areas in their locality. Suggestions are also invited from the public to tackle the menace. "We will identify the trouble spots and increase patrolling in those areas. Awareness seminars will be organised at colleges and schools," said ASP Alankrita Singh. |
MCD ropes in CISF men to secure its HQ
New Delhi, May 3 According to a senior MCD official, a security audit of the Civic Centre at Minto Road found that around 200 security personnel will be required to secure the building. "Once the arrangements like barracks for the personnel are in place, the security agency will take over the charge," said an official. He said that the MCD would make residential arrangements for these security personnel at its colony in New Usmanpur near Shastri Park. "The MCD has more than 800 flats in its colony. The required number of flats will be handed over to the CISF for its personnel," he said. However, sources say that the cost incurred on deputing CISF personnel, including their salaries and other allowances, will be shared by the other occupants of the Civic Centre. "In the building, 60 per cent of the area is occupied by the MCD and the remaining will be occupied by the income tax department and other government departments. The cost of deputing the security personnel will be shared in the same ratio," said the source. Inaugurated on April 22 , 2010 by Union home minister P. Chidambram, the 28-storeye 112-metre landmark building has been constructed at a cost of Rs 650 crore. The building will bring under one roof the deliberative wing and different offices of the civic body, which looks after 96 per cent area in Delhi. However, its construction had been hit by delays, with the MCD missing several deadlines for shifting into the building. The new headquarters of MCD is spread over an area of 1,16,750 square metres and has been built on the concept of Green Building, which means that it makes optimum utilisation of natural resources like air, water and sunlight. The building has facilities like rainwater harvesting, energy-efficient lighting and daylight sensor systems. Water conservation will be ascertained through flow sensors and self-closing taps. |
Task force to check fire safety norms
New Delhi, May 3 Had safety measures been installed in the factory, there would have been fewer casualties, said a senior official. Delhi minister of labour and industries Ramakant Goswami said the decision was taken at a meeting called by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, along with commissioner of industries CP Tripathi, MD of the DSIIDC Chetan Sanghi, additional commissioner (MCD) Janak Digal, chief fire officer AK Sharma, DCP and others. The minister asked the departments of labour and industries to act in tandem to take all precautionary measures to prevent any fire tragedy and other accidents. Fire erupts due to non-implementation of the safety guidelines as per the respective labour laws. The STF has been constituted to ensure installation of the safety measures. Goswami also had a high-level meeting on safety in industries in the backdrop of a fire tragedy in Peeragarhi recently. He underlined the need of taking all possible measures in view of summer season which generally became the cause of fire incidents due to extreme high temperature and occurrence of short circuits. He asked the departments concerned to inspect the factories to ensure that all appliances of fire safety were in place on the premises. It was also decided that inspection of the factories to ensure implementation of the safety norms could be prioritised keeping in view the most fire-prone industries which were at higher risk as far as fire was concerned. |
Metro phase-3 work from next month: Sreedharan
New Delhi, May 3 Speaking about the current progress on Phase III, Dr Sreedharan said the contract for the Mandi House-Central Secretariat line had already been given and the contractor should ideally begin the work on the corridor within the next month or so. "The corridor is very important to us, as it will help divert crowd from Rajiv Chowk to Mandi House. There are a couple of hiccups with many monuments falling in the path, but we are hopeful that Archeological Survey of India (ASI) will give us all the necessary clearances," he said. "The third phase of the Delhi Metro construction will add another 120 km of the Metro network to its existing operational network. About 103-km spanning over four more corridors are expected to be constructed in Delhi apart from 14 km connecting Faridabad, Haryana, and an approximately 3.5 km connecting Botanical Garden Metro Station in NOIDA to Kalindi Kunj," said Dr Sreedharan. "The Harayana government also wants connectivity to the airport express line from Sector 21. Also, the Ghaziabad authorities are interested in another 14 to 15 km extension of the Metro track. If that will be from Vaishali or Dilshad Garden, it has still not been decided. Phase III has a lot of additions to do," he added. Union minister for urban development Kamal Nath, who was also present on the occasion, said the funding pattern for the Phase III had already been set. "The DDA will also help in the DMRC's construction of Phase III. Already Rs 1,500 crore has been released. And not just Phase III, planning for Phase IV should also begin as soon as possible," he said. Also, the DMRC has undergone intensive planning to avoid any overcrowding and technological hiccups. "We will be introducing only six-coach trains on all lines in Phase III since the beginning. If need be, we will be introducing even nine-coach trains. Also, this time around, we are planning to introduce a new signaling technology called communication-based technology that will reduce the operation time to 90 seconds theoretically and 120 seconds partially. Currently, the trains operate on a practical 2 to 3 minutes difference. So, the frequency of trains will be much better and swift," said the "Metro Man". During the last year, the DMRC added a record 74 km to its network, including the 22.9-km-long airport express link, which was opened in February earlier this year. By the end of this year, there will be 99 six-coach trains operational in the Metro. |

A 32-year-old man allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in his residence in Vasant Kunj this morning. The deceased has been identified as Dheeraj and was found hanging from a ceiling fan inside his room by his mother. The incident was reported around 7 am. According to a police official, although no suicide note was recovered from Dheeraj, it seems that financial problems and lack of emotional support could be the reason . "Dheeraj had returned from the USA last year after his father started remaining unwell and needed someone to look after him. However, Dheeraj's wife stayed back in the USA as she is studying there. Here, Dheeraj failed to find a job," said the official. The lack of money and emotional support, being far from his wife, could have led to the depression. HC relief for auto drivers on GPS
New Delhi, May 3 Justice Indermeet Kaur, in an interim order, stayed till May 27 the government's decision to charge the money from each autorickshaw driver at the time of installing the system. Justice Kaur also issued a notice to the Delhi government seeking its reply within two weeks. "The compulsion to pay the amount should be removed from the notification," the court said, saying that autorickshaw drivers were daily wage earners and the charge would harm their livelihood. The court made it clear that the order would be applicable only on the autorickshaw drivers who have approached the high court, which means the transport department cannot take action against the petitioner for plying the auto without GPS system till the court's further order. The government's notification came into force on April 16. Filing a batch of petitions through counsel Praveen Aggarwal, about 200 autorickshaw drivers contended that the government's decision was a violation of their fundamental right of livelihood.
