Corporate sector’s contribution
to society vital: Dikshit
New Delhi, April 23 "The work done by the government can not be equated to that of the corporate and the need is that more women should stand up for the cause of underprivileged and women empowerment," she said. She was speaking at the 27th Annual Session of FICCI Ladies Organisation held in the Capital where she also gave away the FLO awards in a hall, packed with women. According to Dikshit, the country's gross domestic product lies in the quality of life of people in the rural areas rather than the development projects and investment flowing into the country and for this, more people from the community have to join in, she opined. "The corporate world has made enormous contribution, especially in the fields of health, education and skill development. This is an encouraging sign! We have some of the world's richest people and we should consider ourselves privileged for that. The GDP should actually be measured in terms of happiness and satisfaction of the people," said Dikshit. On the occasion, the guest of honour, Sharmila Tagore Pataudi, said the crux of philanthropy lied in empowering the recipients as she went on to share her views on the theme subject - 'philanthropy and the business of sharing'. "Simple charity in the form of donating some money may not be enough. The indicators of development - sanitation and health of women and children are the crucial aspects that call for attention," she remarked. This time, the FLO has felicitated eight women for their contribution to health, education and social sectors under three categories - philanthropy, social services and entrepreneurship. Given for the eighth time, the recipients of various awards were Kalpana Morparia, CEO of JP Morgan Asset Management, Meera Sanyal chairperson of RBS Bank, Priti Adani, managing trustee of Adani Foundation, Mrinal Bajaj, director of the Jamnalal Bajaj Foundation, Sangita Jindal, chairperson of JSW Foundation, Devika Singh, co-founder of Mobile Creches and Meenakshi Jain, founder of Positive Climate Care Pvt. Mayor to review garbage collection system
New Delhi, April 23 On the first day of her office, she had said that ensuring a "clean and green Delhi" would be among her top priorities. The waste collecting centres, operating in Civil Lines, Rohini Zones and parts of Dwarka, are run by private agencies and there have been instances when the civic body has received complaints from residents, pertaining to improper and irregular collection of garbage, said MCD officials. In this regard, the councillor from the Mukherjee Nagar area, also a law professor at Delhi University, said, "I myself saw that there are complaints from Civil Lines zone." "My focus will be on sanitation and improving the image of MCD. For this, we will hold a meeting with private agencies undertaking door-to-door collection of garbage on Monday or Tuesday to review whether they are working properly," said the new mayor. |
Couple’s corpses found in canal
New Delhi, April 23 The bodies had come from Haryana and the neighbouring state police should own them, according to the Delhi police. The canal supplies raw water to Delhi Jal Board. Bodies of a man and a woman wrapped in cloth were found today in a canal in outer Delhi's Bawana area. In the past also, many such bodies had been recovered, a senior officer of Delhi police said. He said that sometimes bodies are highly decomposed. The bodies found today were also decomposed, but can be handled, he added. A resident of Bawana first noticed the bodies floating in the water. He then called other residents of the village. "We noticed a foul smell coming from the cloth wrapping in the canal, after which we fished it out and found the bodies," a Bawana resident said. The people then called the police, who sent the bodies for autopsy. "We are investigating the case. The canal gets water from Haryana, it could be possible that the bodies came from Haryana, but nothing can be said as of now," a senior police officer said. When asked if it was a case of honour killing, the officer added, "We cannot say that at the moment. We are trying to identify the bodies. Once it is done, things will be clear." Earlier too, bodies have been found dumped in the same canal, he said. |
Docs use cleaning device for faster healing of Arunima
New Delhi, April 23 “Yesterday morning Arunima underwent another round of debridement and for this we have put a special device for draining out the edema fluid in the raw area of the stump of the amputated leg. The device would also remove dead and infectious tissues, along with bacteria, and with the bottom of the stump being devoid of skin, the chance of infection becomes more," chief of AIIMS Trauma Centre, Dr MC Misra said. While the closing of wound in the amputated leg now depends on how she responds to the changed treatment, the broken bones in the other leg would be fixed next week with two surgeries, he added. Meanwhile, it has been learnt that last night doctors had to take the help of the Safdarjung police after a verbal duel between the hospital staff and Arunima's brother-in-law. According to sources, he came up with a group of people to see the national volleyball player in the ward, but was denied entry by the guards leading to an altercation. The police also confirmed the happening though there was no formal complaint registered. While the matter has been settled. Dr Misra said, “Our first priority is treating the patient and she is fine.” Earlier, Arunima was brought to the Trauma Centre on April 18 after a serious infection was noticed in the amputated leg. On April 11, a few robbers pushed her off from a general compartment of a running train (Padmawati Express near Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh) while she was travelling from Lucknow to Delhi. |
Delhi Diary Laadli scheme has been launched by the Delhi government to discourage the practice of female foeticide. The scheme offers free education and other benefits to girl child born to parents with less than Rs 1 lakh income per annum. Ironically, the latest Census figures show the prevalence of female foeticide among the well-to-do people. The Census showed no gender bias in the residents of unauthorised colonies or slum clusters. One therefore wonders how the Laadli scheme will help in arresting female foeticide. Some coincidence
Some beneficiaries of DDA's recent draw of lots for residential flats have led to the charge that they all belong to one family. So after the draw of lots on April 18, the BJP immediately cried foul, alleging that the members of a single family got three flats . A red-faced DDA then replied apologetically that while it was true that three different people with similar father's name had got their numbers in the lottery and all belonged to the Jain community, there was actually no relationship between them. That didn't convince the BJP which found too many such coincidences in the draw. "One coincidence is that all three have Jain surnames, the second is that all have the same father's name and the third is that all were successful in the draw. How can there be so many coincidences all together," said a BJP leader. Conspicuous absence
The 'Jan Sunvai' held to air the public grievances in matters of health, sanitation and water supply in slum colonies hardly inspires any confidence in those going to these tamashas. And the reason was amply clear in the recent Jan Sunvai spectacle. The officers of the Municipal Corporation, Delhi Jal Board and other related departments of the Delhi government, meant to redress complaints concerning poor sanitation, unavailability of drinking water, poor healthcare facilities and quality of food for midday meals in MCD schools, were conspicuous by their absence. And with minimal representation from the Directorate Health Services, NCD Delhi and the city government, there was virtually no one to respond to the complaints from the residents of Bindapur, Krishna Nagar and Shadipur of northwest Delhi. While this may not surprise many old hands familiar with the ways of babudom, it is surely an embarrassment for the top guns who devised this mechanism to put up a semblance of accountability of Delhi bureaucrats. Nonetheless, they maintain that such platforms serve as listening posts for the government. 'Singh is King'
Everyone in Delhi Minority Commission is currently singing the song, 'Singh is King'. That is because unlike the chairman and other minority commission members quibbling over non-issues, its Sikh member Sardar Pushpinder Singh has got down to political business right away. The first thing he did after nomination was to constitute the Punjabi Advisory Committee to promote the Punjabi language and culture. Of course, Singh was the first one to secure his nomination to the Delhi Minority Commission, others like chairman Safdar Khan and Christian member Michael being new are still finding their feet. Science buffs throng Open House I2
New Delhi, April 23 This time, the visitors' response has been overwhelming and the numbers should be way beyond 4,000, surpassing last year's figure of around 3,800 footfall, said chairperson of the Open House exhibition, Prof PVM Rao. Among the two major hits of the day-the first one designed by the engineering department-augmented interactive display, drew the attention of students and researchers while bio-textile facilitating reconstruction of human organs, attracted business houses. With tissue engineering emerging as a revolutionary area of research over the years, IIT has come out with some promising work in the recent years and a few such innovations- blood vessels in the form of hollow braided structures made of biodegradable polymers used for clogged arteries, smart dressings and suturers-were showcased during the seventh edition of Open House annual event here. "Textile use for human health and organ development is gradually unfolding and growing up. We have developed biodegradable vessels which surgeons can use in a patient with cardiovascular dysfunction arising due to obstruction of blood in vessels. While these come handy in cardiovascular transplants, there are natural polymer-based dressings and suturers being developed at the institute for over 10-12 years," Prof Bhuvanesh Gupta of the department of textile technology of IIT told The Tribune. While explaining the process of tissue engineering, which involves developing tisues using healthy cells of a patient that are based on textile scaffolds, he explained, "The innovation lies in developing smart dressings. For the dressings, the biomaterial like aloevera, chitosan and other natural hydrogel, are coated on the fabric and freezed and dried to make them porous." |
