A candlelight vigil for Moin
New Delhi, April 22 It was a silent protest against all those insensitive people who prefer young children whom they engage at comparatively cheaper remuneration. The activists held placards, reading: "End child labour now". Moin's parents also joined the cause. Three years ago, when Moin's parents sent their child with a relative Kalimmudin (Moin's employer) for working in his factory from Madubani to Delhi, little did they know that they will be a part of such a gathering standing up for their child. On April 17, Moin was mercilessly hit by the accused in the two-room sweatshop in northwest Delhi while he was making beedis and the child could not survive the fatal injuries. The matter came to light when a committee member of the mosque, where Moin's body was taken for the burial, suspected a foul play and informed the police. According to the activists, there are at least six crore children currently engaged in various kinds of hard and hazardous work. In the national Capital, one can very easily locate them in factories of buttons, beendi, etc. and all these sites are usually found in narrow and dingy lanes where small children are compelled to work against their wishes. "Such inhuman are the conditions that they are forced to work in dimly-lit places and on empty stomach or very little food. On top of that, they are paid very less. It is time the menace of engaging children in work comes to end," Bachpan Bachao Andolan activist Rakesh Senger said. |
Councillors, traders reject Chandni Chowk revamp plan
New Delhi, April 22 The redevelopment plan was put across in a special meeting called by the Additional Commissioner (Engineering) and was out-rightly rejected by the local councillors, trader associations, resident welfare associations and other representatives. "The proposal is not practical at all as it does not bring any solution to the problems being faced by the traders and the residents of the area. The officials have not come on the real ground and thus have failed to address the genuine issues of the area," said Renuka Gupta, councilor from Ballimaran. They also criticised for not being formally invited for the meeting. "We were asked to attend the meeting at the objection of others present there. We reached at the last moment," said Gupta. She said almost 90 per cent of the members in the meeting criticised the proposal which included MLAs, councillors, trader associations and RWAs. "The plan is not feasible at all. If we have a 15-metre wide footpath on both sides, where is the space left for the road. There is going to be huge traffic congestion. Also, they are talking about making it one way, it will again create a big problem for traders coming to the area in a big number," said Praveen Shankar Kapoor, secretary of Chandni Chowk Nagrik Manch. The plan has proposed to ban carts used for carrying goods by the traders while it has allowed passenger rickshaws. "The plan did not include any facilities for civic amenities like public conveniences, neither was there anything on the issue of encroachment. This shows that the officials are not aware of the problems of the area," added Kapoor. The local representatives also complained that they were not consulted for the framing of the plan. "The officials did not bother to consult even the public representatives who actually know where the problem lies," said Kapoor. |
Abbi says MCD not a prefect body
New Delhi, April 22 "I know we, as an organisation, are not perfect and still there is lot of scope for improvement," Abbi, a DU law professor and a first-time councillor from Mukherjee Nagar ward, said in her message posted on the MCD's website. The 49-year-old councillor was elected as city Mayor on Wednesday. She said understanding and goodwill between citizens and the civic body was essential for the better delivery of civic services and that she wanted to "ensure that communication and feedback channels remain open between us". "I will take all possible steps to ensure that we meet the expectations of the public at large," the message reads. Abbi has also appealed to the people to observe "simple civic rules" like paying house tax in time, keeping parks, gardens and other public places neat and clean, not urinating, littering or spitting in public places and not using polythene bags. Soon after being elected, Abbi had said in her tenure that the grievance of the public and the MCD staff would be dealt with in a time-bound manner. "The head of the departments concerned will be made personally responsible for their disposal. Every department will have to send a fortnightly report to the Mayor's office in respect of the grievances received and disposed of," she had said. |

Farmers hold panchayat for implementing SC order
Greater Noida, April 22 Farmers demanded that instead of Greater Noida Authority, the names of farmers should be inserted in the khasras and khataunis pertaining to the land. The farmers said that the land would not be given to the authority. In its order, the Supreme Court had rejected the notification on technical grounds. The farmers' plea was that the apex court order should be enforced strictly by the district administration. Farmer leader Dr Yatender Bhatti said no villager wanted to give his land to the authority. The apex court has given a historic decision in favour of farmers which should be acted upon. The president of the agitation committee Sarda Ram Verma said the authority wants to deprive the farmers of their land. The court decision has come as a big relief. The farmers will meet the district magistrate and make a strong plea to implement the court order, he said. |
