In pigeonhole factories, livelihood comes first
New Delhi, April 29 "We have to work if we have to live," Ramakant, a 40-something labourer at a factory barely 50 metres away, told IANS. The locality is in west Delhi's Peeragarhi area. Some 100 metres away from the building that was gutted, around 15 labourers chatted casually about the fire that broke out Wednesday evening and could be put out only after 12 hours. There was anger, but few wanted to express it openly. Said an unidentified worker at a factory: "There is danger but if the factories are closed, how will we live?" Inside the factories with closed gates, a range of products gets churned out, such as polymer goods, leather and shoes, mostly of which are highly inflammable. But the workers have greater concern about losing their livelihood and would rather not complain. They are overwhelmingly migrants, mostly from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. "What do we do if we don't work. The issues of fire safety is for the sahabs (master) to handle," said Kishan Singh, a worker. All buildings in the locality have iron gates, which are closed while the workers are inside working. That was also the case at the three-storey building housing the shoe factory. A key reason the workers got trapped inside was because there were bars on the windows and cartons blocked the passageways. The police hase said there was a clear violation of fire safety norms. While it is still not clear how many workers were inside the factory, 10 charred bodies were taken out on Thursday. "When the building caught fire, we tried to put a ladder and cut the window grills, but the heat and smoke from inside was so intense that we could not cut it," said Pradeep Kumar, a local. — IANS

DU gears up for new admission schedule
New Delhi, April 29 Significant changes in the admission process this year have the students at ease as they do not need to apply for admissions in Delhi University in May unlike previous years. They can just sit back and relax till late June as the centralised OMR forms, introduced in 2007, have been done away with this year. Even the individual colleges will not give out any pre-admission forms from this year. So, the actual admission process will begin once the cut-offs are out which is likely in the third week of June. DU officials are still working out the modalities and schedule for the truncated admission season which is likely to make things simple, at least, for the applicants. However, those willing to know more about the courses and colleges should wait for the university to upload its information bulletin on the DU website. Individual colleges will also release their prospectus prior to the release of the cut-offs. "Since there will be no running around like previous years, students must visit the websites of different colleges to know more about the courses and facilities they offer and also about their faculty. However, outstation students must attend the 'open days' which are likely to be conducted in June," said Gurpreet Singh Tuteja, deputy dean, students' welfare. Even the hostel forms may be available once the admissions start. Also, this time, the university aspirants will get a day extra after the announcement of the cut-off lists for admission and submission of fees. The move aims at making the undergraduate admission process even more student-friendly. Unlike previous years, this time, students will get four days instead of three to complete the admission process. Furthermore, there would be five cut-off lists instead of four. The new admission guidelines issued last month for the undergraduate admission process (2011-12) of DU further mention that admission forms for the categories of sports and extra-curricular activities will be provided by the respective colleges from the date of announcement of the second cut-off list. Dean of students' welfare JM Khurana said, "The students will get a day more after the cut-offs are announced. Earlier, they would get three days for the completion of the admission process." |

Cong sees corruption in hoardings of Mayor
across Delhi
New Delhi, April 29 Opposition leader Jai Kishan Sharma alleged that by putting up the hoardings, the advertising agencies were violating the advertising policy rules. "Some of the congratulatory hoardings show messages by BJP workers while others have been put up by advertising agencies on their own," said Gupta. He said that the move could cause revenue loss to the tune of crores of rupees to the civic agency. "When Abbi was a member of the standing committee, she had repeatedly raised the issue of a nexus between MCD officials and advertising agencies. She had stood up against corruption in the advertisement department of the corporation, saying that advertising agencies did not make due payment to the corporation," said Sharma. The leader of opposition said that many of the advertising agencies owed the MCD over Rs 25 crore, an issue that even Abbi had always stressed upon. He alleged that now, by putting up Abbi's posters, the advertising agencies were trying to please her in the hope of getting professional favours from her office. The agencies want that the new Mayor do not stress on collecting the outstanding revenue from them. Gupta also raised questions about the sudden change in Abbi's attitude towards the agencies. "It is astonishing that despite being aware of Abbi's stand on them, these agencies have suddenly become so kind to her. The agencies have attributed all the places allocated for advertisements for hoardings of the new Mayor," Sharma said. He said that Congress councillors would soon take the matter to the Lokayukta. He said that his party workers had prepared a CD of such advertisements in areas under the jurisdiction of the MCD, NDMC and even DDA. "Just like Abbi, Arti Mehra had raised the issue of corruption in advertising agencies and ran a drive against illegal hoardings. But when she became the Mayor, the advertising agencies put her posters across the city to please her. And as expected, Mehra became soft towards the errant advertising agencies," said Sharma. |
