Govt fails to convince auto drivers on GPS
New Delhi, May 19 As the government has refused to accept their demand, the auto unions will go on indefinite strike from late this evening. All the 55,000 autos will be off the road. Anand Trivedi, president of Bhajpa Auto Prakoshth Sangh, said that the cost of GPS installation is Rs 20,000. The government insists that the drivers recover this amount from the passengers at the rate of Rs 0.50 per km which is not possible. The government should bear the cost. He also said that a few years ago, the government had announced it would get a welfare board constituted for the drivers. This has not been done so far. He said the decision to go on strike was taken jointly by all the auto unions such as Auto Rickshaw Sangh, Pragatisheel Auto Union, Bhartiya Tipahiya Chalak Union and Auto Union Sangh supported by the BJP. He said, "Today we were called by the transport minister to discuss the issue. “We reached Delhi Secretariat with a hope that our demands would be accepted. “But instead of accepting our demands, the
minister tried to threaten us. We will not come under pressure of any authority. We are poor people and cannot afford the cost of GPS." |

Rehab of human trafficking victims a major concern
New Delhi, May 19 The workshop also deliberated on laws related to human trafficking, investigation techniques and dimensions, magnitude and vulnerabilities relating to human trafficking along with issues like rescue, care and rehabilitation of the victims. The workshop was organised by the School of Law, IGNOU, in partnership with the ministry of home affairs, bureau of police research and development and centre for social research. It provided a unique platform for nodal officers of all the state governments and union territories with a view to empower them through training and capacity building about anti-human trafficking. "The participants felt the need to accelerate the process of sensitisation, awareness and training to a large number of law enforcement officials and other stakeholders like prosecutors, government departments, NGOs, etc.," said Prof K Elumalai, director of the School of Law. "The conclusive discussions were held on the roles and responsibilities of the nodal officers. Additionally discussions were held on a ministry of home affairs scheme titled strengthening the law enforcement response in India against trafficking in persons through training and capacity building," said Prof Elumalai. The scheme has two aspects, one is establishing integrated anti-human trafficking units and the other is undertaking intensive training of the trainers. Under this scheme, it is proposed to establish 335 anti-human trafficking units across the country and impart training to over 10,000 police officers, said Prof Elumalai. Not only are these special units going to be made functional to strike out against any form of human trafficking and weed it out, but the trainers, who are largely police officers, will also be specially trained and prepared to achieve this goal of eradicating this social evil from the nation. The government has already released fund of Rs 8.72 crore as a first installment for the year 2010-11 to all the state governments for the establishment of 115 anti-human trafficking units. "The real purpose of the trainers programme is to pass knowledge and skills to colleagues who work at different levels to ensure ground-level sensitisation, said he said. Already, six regional-level workshops for all the states have been held. |

Two power generation units of Dadri and Jhajhar power stations are still not functioning. They had gone out of order due to technical snags yesterday. Delhi could not get its share of power from the central allocation either. Power cuts were reported from East, West, South and North Delhi that affected the water supply also. Though schools are closed, college and office goers faced difficulty. They reached office late. After a meeting with CEOs, all the three discoms - BSES, Rajdhani and NDPL -- power minister Harun Yusuf said direction has been issued to the companies to arrange additional power to tide over the situation. According to the agreement reached between the government and the discoms, it is responsibility of the power distribution companies to make arrangement of additional power during summers. As far as the government is concerned, it would ask the central government to increase Delhi's allocation in the central pool. With temperature continuing to hover over 42 degrees Celsius, power demand in the city remained high as 4870 MW today. A senior official of the NDPL said it has enough power but due to some technical snag, loadshedding was reported while the BSES official said that it has less power supply that was the reason for power cuts in many areas. |
