Couple elopes, girl’s brother kills boy’s parents
New Delhi, June 1 According to the police, the incident was reported from gali number 7 of Saboli village around 6.15 am and the deceased has been identified as Sharda Prasad Tiwari (48) and his wife Shobha Tiwari (42). According to Sanjay Kumar Jain, DCP (NE), the main accused has been identified as Dinesh, alias Sonu, who managed to flee after the incident and several police teams are working to apprehend him. "The deceased has been identified as Sharda Prasad and Shobha Tiwari and a hunt is on for the culprits involved in the incident," said Jain. According to another police official close to investigation, though Sharda Prasad and Shobha received three and two bullets respectively and were killed on the spot, they were not the target. "Their son Durgesh was the main target as he had eloped with Sonu's sister in December last year and later married her. However, after some time both returned and started staying in their respective houses. Meanwhile, the girl's family filed a complaint with regard to the girl's age, saying that she was a minor and that Durgesh was trying to mislead her. The two families were in fact fighting a case in this regard in the court, revealed the official, adding that there was a court date in the case today. It seems Sonu, abetted by his friends thought of eliminating Durgesh. "Accompanied by three other youths, Sonu wanted to teach Durgesh a lesson and had come with the intention of killing him. However, when he rang the bell, Sharda Prasad and his wife came first followed by Durgesh. As Sonu aimed to fire at Durgesh, his father and mother came in between and the duo died saving him. Around six shots were fired. Soon, the culprits fled as neighbours rushed in hearing the fire shot," said the official. The number of people involved is still variable as eyewitnesses have given different statements. While some said there were three people in all, others claimed there were four culprits who fled on foot. Police investigation has also revealed that Sonu often threatened Durgesh with dire consequences. "We have come across many people in the area who told us that Sonu's pride was hurt when his sister eloped with Durgesh and he often talked of avenging it. He had in fact openly threatened Durgesh," said the official. The forensic and crime unit visited the spot and picked up the samples. The bodies have been sent for the postmortem to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital. Meanwhile, shocked by the incident, Durgesh has demanded security from the police. |
Prez rejects lokayukta’s recommendation to sack Chauhan
New Delhi, June 1 The home ministry today conveyed decision of the President through a letter to lokayukta Justice Manmohan Sarin who indicated his deep disappointment over rejection of his recommendation, saying such reverses are expected when moral values are sought to be enforced. "The President has not accepted the findings and recommendations made by the lokayukta against Chauhan," the home ministry said in the letter. Sarin had in February recommended to the President to "withdraw her pleasure" for the minister to continue in office, holding him guilty of misconduct of "grave nature". The home minister, P Chidambaram, when asked about the President's rejection of the lokayukta's recommendation, said the procedure has been followed in dealing with the report by the anti-corruption watchdog. "There is a procedure to deal with the report. That procedure has been followed," Chidambaram said. Justice Sarin's order had come in a case pertaining to Chauhan's alleged involvement in influencing a team of tax officials when they were carrying out a survey in the Tivoli Garden resort in South Delhi in February last year. The Lokayukta order had said that "the minister made a telephone call to the Commissioner of Trade of Taxes in the evening of February 20 last year when a team of tax officials were carrying search and survey on the premises of Tivoli Garden Resort to unearth huge evasion of taxes and concealment of income. |

New Delhi, June 1 More than 1,000 followers of the Baba are
enthusiastically working at the ground to make it ready for lakhs of people who will gather there to protest against corruption and black money hoarded in foreign banks. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has assured its full support to the movement. BJP leaders, including Subhash Arya, Leader of House in the MCD, today inspected the site. "We will try to ensure that all civic amenities are in place here and will

"People will be pouring in from all over the country so we cannot mention any figure as of now," said Arya. Over 50 LCD screens and projectors have been installed and more than 100 CCTV cameras
will keep a tap on the visitors. The camp has the facility of 200 doctors with an
air-conditioned ICU provided by the Delhi Medical Council and 50 ambulances to work
round the clock at the site. Asked about the total expenditure, Arya said it was all sponsored. "We don't have to
spend at all. People have sponsored each and everything at this camp," said Arya. |
Bhatta farmers refuse to go to Lucknow to meet CM
Greater Noida, June 1 At a panchayat meeting held at Bhatta Parsaul village yesterday, farmers decided that if the Chief Minister wanted to talk to them she should come to their village. The village panchayat said the farmers would in no case go to Lucknow to talk to the Chief Minister as suggested by the agriculture minister. "If the Chief Minister wants to share our pain and grievances, she should come down to the village. After all, it was her area as she is a native of Badalpur village in Greater Noida," villagers said. They wondered why the state government did not think of Bhatta Parsaul when the tragedy occurred 26 days ago. The farmers demanded a compensation of Rs 25 lakh each for those killed in police firing on May 7 and Rs 15 lakh each for the injured. The panchayat also said a CBI enquiry should be ordered in the case. The villagers also demanded that police and PAC personnel should be immediately withdrawn from the village and the area around it. Further, the panchayat demanded that all accused be released from jail and the complaints registered against them be withdrawn. Also, the rewards announced by the government on four farmers, including their leader Manveer Tewatia, should also be withdrawn. The villagers accused minister Narain of having cheated the Bhatta Parsaul farmers twice in the past. They alleged that the agriculture minister was luring them to go to Lucknow so that the farmers could be arrested there. The panchayat meeting was attended by a large number of farmers from the villages surrounding Bhatta Parsaul. |

City magistrate Sanjay Chauhan and Greater Noida authority officials had reached the dharna site and pacified them.

Class X board, no longer a phobia for students
New Delhi, June 1 They have been extremely carefree in their attitude. The teachers and the experts are of the opinion that this lack of stress among students is a result of the comprehensive evaluation system. The students inform that the fact that they are not getting marks but are being graded has taken the tension out of the examination. Avanti Gupta, the Class X topper from Amity International, Mayur Vihar, said, "I have not been worried about exams, for one thing the fact that I was not sitting the board but only the school exams was one factor that took the stress away. Then we are being graded and, of course, I am glad to have scored an A1 grade in five of my subjects but this is not the same as getting marks. The fact that all the papers are being graded has taken the stress away from the students." Apurva Talluri, another topper from Amity International, Mayur Vihar, said, "The examination has been cool without any stress. I gave the school exams and this in itself felt like any exam, the fact that I was not sitting the board took the tension away. I worked for the examination but it was like working for any examination, it is the board that makes you think of making extra effort. I am thrilled to be in the toppers' list and hope to keep the good work up." "Most students were relaxed about this examination, stress levels were simply not there. I think getting graded is a really positive development." Students have repeatedly put forward the view that this examination involved no stress, however, some feel no marks also took the excitement away from the examination. Ashima Jindal, the topper from Apeejay School, said, "I am happy to have topped but it would also have been good to get marks. The grades are not the same thing as getting marks. It has taken the fun out of the examination. For many of us who do well in studies getting high scores is an added thrill. Also, there was no exam anxiety." Pratush Goyal is the topper in five subjects from Manav Sthali School, he said, "It has been great to top the examination but this exam was no challenge, it was relaxed, I was not worried. I will only worry about the Class XII examination as that is the one which counts for our future. Many students who sat for the exams were not worried. The CCE has taken the examination stress out by making the board exam optional." Gargi Gupta, a parent, said, "My children are studying in Manav Sthali School and I must say they prepared for the exams without undue stress. I remember that when we gave the Class X board way back it was a stressful affair but this generation have walked through the exams. I do not think it is such a good idea to make the board exams optional, children should be made to give the board so that they do not get into shock when they face the Class 12 board and competitions later on." |

Tihar to prefer convicts over undertrials for labour
New Delhi, June 1 "Convict population has increased inside the jails over the past few years. As per the prison rules, they must work to earn wages and remission. Undertrials who choose to work too are also employed," Tihar jail spokesperson Sunil Gupta said. "Unlike earlier times when inmates were employed irrespective of their offence, we have decided that now onwards, preference will be given to convicts," Gupta said. Inmates, especially convicts are involved in different kind of works which include masonry, gardening, sweeping and cleaning and even office work in the prison. Those employed are provided wages at the rates prescribed by the Delhi government. Gupta said the conviction rate had increased over the past few years. "Last year, 18 per cent of prison population comprised convicts and the remaining were undertrials. This year the convict population has increased to 25 per cent," he said. Tihar jail is already overcrowded. Against its capacity to house only 6,250 prisoners, a total
of 11,719 prisoners are now lodged here. — PTI |

New Delhi, June 1 With this, the government hospitals of the area would have 1,150 beds which means the residents in the trans-Yamuna area will not have to run to other hospitals in central Delhi, said health and family welfare minister AK Walia today. While taking a round of the localities of the Mustafabad Assembly segment, where he inaugurated a dispensary at Rajiv Gandhi Nagar, he said the people of the trans-Yamuna area would have much-improved healthcare services. The government was committed to develop all parts of the Capital and in this direction many developmental schemes under this constituency had been approved. Apart from this, the government was giving final touches to the plan of a dispensary, a community centre and a school at Brijpuri over a plot of around 3,900 sq yards and almost all formalities had been completed. Inadequate, say activists of new anti-tobacco warnings
New Delhi, June 1 "It is certainly better than the previous warnings that had hazy pictures of shrunken lungs. But this alone is not going to help as the notification has to be bolstered by many other actions in the anti-tobacco campaign," Pankaj Chaturvedi, associate professor of head and neck cancer department at Mumbai's Tata Memorial Hospital said. After two years of campaigning by the civil society groups, the health and family welfare ministryon Saturday approved harsher pictorial warnings for cigarettes and chewing tobacco products to be implemented from December this year. The warnings will carry gory pictures of mouth and lung cancer on smoke packets and non-smoke pouches. They will be rotated every two years. According to a 2009 study by the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS), India accounts for nearly 274.9 million tobacco users -- around 35 percent of the population. Chaturvedi, who initiated the nationwide 'Voice-of-Victims' campaign against tobacco, said: "Firstly the pictures issued for smoking are very mild as compared to the pictures for gutka or chewing tobacco, then the rotation should be within a period of six months so that people are able to know multiple adverse effects of smoking." Experts believe that steps need to be taken to improve low public awareness, deter strong industry lobbies, and for stringent
implementation. — IANS |
