Pay woes: Ayurvedic docs threaten agitation
PK Jaiswar/TNS

Amritsar, May 31
Feeling ignored while issuing a notification of granting Non-Practice Allowance (NPA) as per the 5th Pay Commission for veterinary doctors, Ayurvedic doctors in Punjab have threatened to launch an agitation if the state government failed to issue the same to them within a fortnight.

The Punjab Government had recently issued notification of granting NPA to veterinary doctors, while the Ayurvedic Medical Officers were allegedly ignored.

“This is direct violation of the recommendation of 5th Pay Commission and this discriminatory action of the government is not acceptable to us and we will not tolerate this at any cost,” said Dr Atamjit Singh Basra, president, Punjab Ayurvedic Medical Services Association.

He said the 5th Pay Commission, after examining the demand of Ayurvedic, homeopathic and veterinary doctors, had recommended that they should be granted NPA of 25 per cent of basic pay. He also pointed out that not granting NPA to them would be discriminatory.

“The Ayurvedic doctors were feeling ignored, downgraded and humiliated,” he said.

The Centre had already given parity with Allopathic medical officers since 1986 and even the neighbouring states had given the same to Ayurvedic doctors, added Dr Basra.

He threatened that if the notification regarding granting NPA to them was not issued within 15 days, they would be forced to adopt the path of agitation and thereafter, course of action would be decided in the state executive meeting.
