Kapurthala, May 26
Two different panels --- a four-member RCF committee and two-member district administration committee --- have found RCF ENT specialist Dr Sandeep Mehta guilty of sexually harassing a girl patient during her examination on May 2.

According to sources, the district administration committee, headed by DTO-cum-Executive Magistrate Daljit Kaur, found Dr Mehta had misbehaved with the girl during her examination conducted without the necessary presence of any hospital attendant. The inquiry report further stated that Dr Mehta also gave the girl a slip containing his mobile number and house number and asked her to come to his house.

Recommending departmental action against the doctor, the committee sent the report to DC HS Sidhu.

The sources further stated that Sidhu was seeking legal opinion on the report before forwarding it to the Railways for taking action against the erring doctor.

Similarly, the RCF committee comprising Deputy Financial Adviser and Chief Accounts Officer Manjit Kaur, Deputy Chief Personnel Officer Baljit Singh, RCF employee Tarlochan Kaur and NGO member Anjana Talwar also found Dr Mehta guilty of sexual harassment.

The committee said actions of the doctor in checking her alone without the necessary presence of any attendant, asking her immoral questions, giving his mobile number and house address are clear signs that he had tried to allure her.

Meanwhile the sources said, RCF General Manager KK Saxena has already forwarded the inquiry report to the Northern Railway GM for strict action against the erring doctor.

In the meantime, agitating RCF employees sought for Dr Mehta’s suspension and departmental action against him. Talking to mediapersons, staff council Joint Secretary Sarabjit Singh said that staff council and other unions have given the ultimatum to the management for Dr Mehta’s suspension till May 30.

The staff council also demanded the withdrawal of false cases registered against the four staff council members for allegedly thrashing Dr Mehta at his official residence in RCF colony on May 3. The police had registered a criminal case against the four employees on the doctor’s complaint, it also registered a criminal case of alleged misbehaviour against Dr Mehta on the girl’s complaint.

Name of Chakki Bank rly station changed
Home Ministry accepts demands of Pathankot residents
Ravi Dhaliwal
Tribune News Service

Pathankot, May 26
A long-standing demand of the residents was finally met by the Union Home Ministry and the government decides to change the name of the bustling Chakki Bank railway station to Pathankot Cantonment railway station.

Pathankot has two railway stations - Pathankot City and Chakki Bank - and a majority of trains chug into the town at Chakki Bank station, which is considered to be one of the busiest railway stations of Punjab.

At least two dozen trains pass through this station. However, passengers travelling from far away places to this town normally get confused when they learn that Chakki Bank is actually the name of Pathankot’s main station. The town has a heavy presence of Army and Air Force personnel and members of the armed forces have a hard time in locating Pathankot Cantonment on the railway time table since it showed Chakki Bank and not Pathankot Cantonment station.

A move to change the name was initiated about three decades ago with local residents Dinesh Mahajan and H.R. Khera spearheading the movement. However, owing to the whimsical and somewhat lackadaisical attitude of the Home Ministry, the move fizzled out.

Residents had a hard time convincing political leaders of the need to change the name of the station to Pathankot Cantonment. However, member of Parliament from Gurdaspur Partap Bajwa promised the residents that he would take up the issue with the authorities concerned in New Delhi.

Bajwa kept his promise and took up the issue with Gurudas Kamat, Minister of State for Home Affairs, Communication and Information Technology. Kamat has now given the green signal and has sent Bajwa and other authorities concerned a letter intimating the change of name.

The minister has given the mandatory no-objection certificate (NOC) to the Punjab Government asking it to immediately change the name from Chakki Bank to Pathankot Cantonment.

The move has been welcomed by residents and politicians across the board.

Congress leader Vikram Joshi said,“The residents can now heave a sigh of relief. Now with the change of name, passengers, particularly tourists, will have no confusion.”
