Nursing student jumps to death
Amritsar, May 16 The deceased, Vimal (23), a resident of Naagkalan village, had recently graduated from Government Nursing College situated on the medical college premises. She was doing an internship programme at the hospital. The people, who saw her jumping from the window of the fifth floor of the hospital, immediately rushed her to the emergency ward where she died. Police officials, including Makhan Singh, ADCP, City-II, reached the spot and initiated action under Section 174 of the CrPc. He said the police had started investigating various angels. The police took the statements of the eyewitnesses, her classmates and hospital authorities in this regard. Dr Rameshpal Singh Dhoat, Deputy Medical Superintendent of the hospital, said as per friends and classmates of the deceased, she was an intelligent girl and was of a reserved nature. “We are all upset over the tragic incident. She was very intelligent and well-mannered girl,” said Kamaljeet Kaur, Principal of Government Nursing College. She informed that she did not attend the class. But as per her friends she was quite normal like any other day. Harish Behal, SHO, Majitha Road police station, said Kishan Chand, father of deceased, in his statement expressed ignorance about the reason behind such a drastic step taken by his daughter. He said he did not suspect involvement of any person. The police did not find any suicide note from the girl. |

Hoshiarpur citizens honour Tikshan Sud
Hoshiarpur, May 16 This was stated by Punjab Local Bodies and Industry Minister Tikshan Sud at a function organised by citizens to honour him on his nomination as the leader of BJP legislature group in the state Assembly by the party high command at the PWD Rest House here last night. He had arrived here after taking oath for his new assignment. He was accompanied by his wife Rakesh Sud. Deputy Commissioner Dharam Dutt Tarnach, SSP Rakesh Aggarwal, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Harminder Singh, SDM Capt Karnail Singh, local BJP leaders and citizens of Hoshiarpur were present on the occasion. Tikshan Sud thanked the people of Hoshiarpur for electing him as an MLA for three consecutive terms. He claimed that he had got made development in all the spheres in Hoshiarpur state Assembly segment. He would work with the present spirit in future also. Condemning the UPA government for its complete failure in controlling the price hike, which had made the lives of common men miserable, Tikshan Sud appealed to the people to unitedly fight against the price hike. He claimed that the SAD-BJP government of Punjab was totally committed to the welfare and prosperity of people of the state. Minister travels in rickshaw Tikshan Sud and his wife Rakesh Sud went in a rickshaw from the PWD Rest House to his house last night to oppose the hike in the price of petrol after the completion of the function. IG inspects police stations
Phagwara, May 16 This was stated by Punjab Police Academy, Phillaur, Director, and Jalandhar Range in charge IG Ishwar Chander Sharma during his one-day inspection tour of various police stations of the subdivision, besides CIA Staff and Community Police Resource Centre here this evening. He said all IGs would submit their reports of inspections along with their recommendations to the DGP by May 20. He said he held meetings with some prominent citizens of the town and heard them to improve the police efficiency. Replying to a question, IG Sharma said he observed that traffic arrangements in Phagwara were not up to the mark, while the cases of snatching, eve-teasing and other small crimes were on an increase in the town. He advised and instructed the local police officials to launch a campaign to curb the crime and remove the fear of the police from the minds of the citizens. The IG said some police officers complained of the shortage of the force. He said 1,500 women and 5,000 men constables were being recruited by the Punjab Police soon. Commandant, IRB, Tulsi Ram and SSP Sukhwinder Singh Maan were accompanying the IG. |
Three injured in father-son conflict over land
Nawanshahr, May 16 Three persons, Inderjit Singh, his friend Ladoo and Sukhdev Singh’s driver Sukhjinder Singh of New Delhi, were injured in the firing and bloody brawl between the two groups. All the three injured were admitted to the Civil Hospital, from where Inderjit Singh was referred to Ludhiana. As per information, the violent clash occurred as Sukhdev Singh and his son Inderjit Singh had come there in connection with the ongoing family dispute over an agricultural land at the village. Sukhdev Singh alleged that he had come here to visit his agricultural land at his village, but his son, accompanied by some other persons, attacked him, but his driver Sukhjinder Singh came forward to shield him. Three rounds of bullets were fired and sharp-edged weapons were also used in the scuffle. Both the groups have been accusing each other for the attack. Dr Narinder Bhargav, SSP, said during the preliminary inquiry it had come to light that Sukhjinder Singh, driver of Sukhdev Singh, had a criminal record and a number of cases had already been registered against him at different police stations in New Delhi and Jalandhar. Even, in some cases he had been convicted. The police has been investigating into the case. The case would be registered after recording statements of the inured persons and the other persons connected with the dispute. |
4 held for girl’s rape, murder
Jalandhar, May 16 The City police has arrested four youths involved in the crime, including Heena’s boyfriend Mandeep. The case under Sections 302 and 376/34 of the IPC has been registered against the four. Baljinder Singh, SHO, Rama Mandi, said in her statement, Heena’s sister Khushboo, revealed that her sister was having relation with Mandeep. She alleged that Mandeep called her up sister around 2.30 am during the intervening night of May 14 -15. Baljinder said acting on her statement, the police rounded up Mandeep. During the initial investigation, he admitted that he along with his three friends, Rajesh, Sanjay and Vinod, raped Heena before killing her with sharp-edged weapons, said Baljinder. Baljinder said Mandeep decided to kill Heena as she was pressurising him for marriage. He said the accused threw her body near railway line to make it look like a railway accident. Baljinder added that the weapons used in the crime were also recovered from the accused. |
