Third eye all set to keep watch on Golden Temple
127 CCTV cameras installed in the entire complex station
Amritsar, May 9 The SGPC has installed 127 CCTV cameras in the entire complex at a cost of Rs 1.5 crore. The cameras can capture colour images even at night and come with tilt-zoom and range-adjustment features. Out of these, there are 101 outdoor box CCTV cameras. There are 11 outdoor PTZ (Pan Tilt Zoom) CCTV cameras with distant zoom feature which can turn 360 degrees.
There are also infrared CCTV cameras with night vigil facility. These cameras have been installed in front of the Akal Takht, ‘parkarma’ verandahs, all four “chhabeels” in the ‘parkarma’, “gathri ghar” (baggage room), jora ghar (shoe-deposit centres), ‘kara parshad’ counters and the room where cash offering is counted. However, no CCTV camera has been installed from Darshani Deori to the sanctum sanctorum due to a couple of reasons. Firstly, the cabling required for the installation of the CCTV camera would mar the beauty of the architectural marvel that the Golden Temple. Secondly, the installation of the current lot of CCTV cameras is disrupting the signals and subsequently affecting the live telecast of “Gurbani” from the shrine. Therefore, the SGPC is now contemplating to install special wireless CCTV cameras in this stretch. The SGPC has also appointed six control room operators through Vantage Security Solutions, a security agency firm. Four more operators would be appointed soon as a total of 10 are needed to manage the facility round-the-clock. The control room is equipped with eight LCD screens and the latest software. According to SGPC officials, the software will not only facilitate identify any unclaimed object lying in the complex but will also sound an alarm if somebody jumps into the “sarovar”. At present, the CCTV cameras installed in the complex can record activities for 24 hours, but once the system gets fully operational their recording capacity will go up to 30 days. The CCTV facility can be made more effective if the SGPC deploys watch and ward staff equipped with walkie talkie sets at the four entrance gates of the shrine as well as inside the complex. SGPC secretary Dalmegh Singh is looking after the entire CCTV project while Nishan Singh is providing technical supervision. The SGPC since long was contemplating the installation of CCTV cameras for more security at the Golden Temple Complex. The proposal was first mooted when Bibi Jagir Kaur was heading the SGPC. The decision to put up CCTV cameras was apparently taken following attacks on religious places and threats to blow up the Golden Temple. Cases of picking of pockets and garment thefts, besides instances of children going missing, also prompted the SGPC to act on the proposal. SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar said they will update the security at the Golden Temple and provide their staff the latest security equipment so that the CCTV camera facility is fully utilised. |
