Hoshiarpur, May 12
In her second attempt, 27-year-old Dr Gagan Kundra, daughter of Sushil Kundra and Sudesh Kundra of the local Model Colony, cleared the Civil Services Examination -2010 by securing the 219th position.

Though she had cleared MBBS in 2008 and was serving as a doctor at the DMC, Ludhiana, but her uncle Ashok Kundra, an IAS officer of the 1966 batch and a retired Secretary from the Union Mines Department, cousin Ashish Kundra and his wife Gitanjli Kundra, both IAS officers, inspired her to make an attempt for clearing the Civil Service Examination.

Talking to mediapersons here this afternoon, Dr Gagan Kundra said instead of doing postgraduation in medical stream, she preferred to clear the Civil Services Examination. Keeping in view her 219th position, she would opt for the Indian Revenue Service (IRS). She had an earnest desire to serve the nation and people of the country with dedication and honesty.

Her father Sushil Kundra, Chief Manager, Punjab National Bank, and mother Sudesh Kundra, lecturer in political science, Government Senior Secondary School, Piplanwala, always encouraged her to appear in the competition. Her younger sister Ruchika Kundra had done BDS and was preparing for postgraduation entrance test.

Jalandhar: Jalandhar’s Manjit Kaur has made it to the civil services by bagging 903rd rank in Union Public Service Commission examination.

Born and brought up in Kharar, Manjit got married in Jalandhar in February this year.

Manjit’s father Dalbir Singh is an employee with the Agricultural Department and mother Mohinder Kaur works with the Health Department.

Manjit, who pursued her MCom from the University Business School in Panjab University, Chandigarh, (2001), is also a company secretary and has also cleared MBA (distance education from the PTU).

She has also cleared UGC/ Net, and has served as a lecturer at Mata Gurjri College at Fatehgarh Sahib and AS College, Khanna.

In 2004, she began working as an accounts officer with the BSNL circle office in Chandigarh (she also won the Vishishth Seva Padak for her services).

She planned to appear for the civil services exam since she had a fascination for administrative posts right since her childhood.

An overjoyed Manjit terms her marriage lucky and gives credit to her husband (Kamaljit Singh, a senior accountant in a private firm) for the success.

“An administrative job is indeed a great opportunity to serve the public and make a difference,” quipped Manjit. — TNS

The police claims to have arrested three youths involved in the murder of a youth, who was brutally killed by five of his friends last night.

Amarjit Madari died around 1 am today after five of his friends inflicted him multiple injuries with sharp-edged weapons near Sher Singh Colony here. The police said the friends called him from his home on the pretext of taking him to a friend’s party.

Although the police has yet to scrutinise the document evidence regarding their ages, it is learnt that preliminary investigations revealed that two of the five accused are minors.

In a press conference held here, ACP (West), Ravinder Pal Singh Sandhu, said in her complaint the deceased’s mother, Nirmala Rani, alleged that Rinku Kumar and Shunti, both friends of Amarjit, had come to their home and took Amarjit along with them around 10.30 pm last night.

However, when Amarjit did not return till midnight, her family members went out in search of him. “The fact that Rinku Kumar had picked up a quarrel with Amarjit days ago and threatened him with dire consequences also aggravated our apprehension,” Nirmala said.

She alleged around 12.30 am, the family was shocked to find his blood-soaked body beneath a bridge on a nearby canal.

She alleged that five persons, including Amarjit’s friends Rinku Kumar, Vinay Kumar, Sunny and Vijay Kumar, along with an unidentified youth, assaulted Amarjit with sharp-edged weapons, which led to his death.

Meanwhile, Sandhu said the nature of the injuries inflicted upon the deceased’s body indicated that the accused might have criminal background.

He said Rinku Kumar, Anil Kumar and Sunny were arrested by the police today and the a case under Section 302 of the IPC registered.

Politician arrested for freeing accomplices from police custody

Jalandhar, May 12
Over one and a half years after a case was registered against him, the Jalandhar police has arrested Narinder Thapar, district president of the Shiv Sena (Samajwadi Party), who had hatched a successful conspiracy to free his accomplices from the police custody around two years ago.

The police said Thapar was wanted in several cases, including one in which he, along with dozens of his supporters, gheroed a police party and forced it to free his accomplices, who were arrested on the charges of betting and gambling in October, 2009.

The staff of Division IV police station arrested Thapar from his office on Wednesday evening.

Kuldeep Singh Bhullar, an IPS officer, who was appointed as an in charge of Division IV police station just a month ago, was instrumental in Thapar’s arrest. Thapar, since the incident, had been roaming free in the city and also frequently participating in various public functions.

Bhullar said the crime in which Thapar and his supporters virtually hijacked the police vehicle carrying arrested persons occurred in October, 2009, near the Jyoti Chowk locality. He added that the accused had also forcibly taken away the money with them, which was earlier recovered from them.

“After the incident, a case was registered against Thapar under Sections 382, 332, 186, 148 and 149 of the IPC.

However, he had been evading arrest since then. His case had come to our notice during the routine perusal of case files,” said Bhullar. Sources revealed that the police was also investigating Thapar’s role in various other cases of forgery, registered in the same police station.
