Two labourers killed after wall caves in
UT orders inquiry; construction firm contractor booked
Chandigarh, May 12
Two labourers working at a under-construction site in Phase 1, Industrial Area, were killed after a 20-foot mud wall caved in at the site here around noon. The incident took place when the foundation of the commercial complex was being laid. The UT administration ordered an inquiry into the incident and a report would be tabled within a fortnight.

A prank played by an unidentified caller at the police control room (PCR), who ‘tipped’ the cops about a murder at a Sector-43 house, has left the occupants totally shocked. Even 18 hours after the trauma through which Hitesh Puri, an advocate by profession and general secretary of the Federation of Sector Welfare Associations, was shaken by last night’s experience.

Shots fired at house of Akali leader, none hurt
Mohali, May 12
Unidentified carborne suspects fired three gunshots at the Sector 69 residence of a Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader, Kiranbir Singh Kang, in the wee hours today. Kang, who was recently appointed the party’s vice-president and also a member of its political affairs committee, was asleep in his bedroom when the shots were fired at about 1.30 am.

6 kids hurt as car hits van

Six school students suffered minor injuries when an Innova car, being driven rashly by a woman, hit their school van at Sector 9 here this afternoon. The students belonged to the CRB Public School, Sector 7.

CTU bus crushes man to death
Chandigarh, May 12
A 32-year-old carpenter died after he was hit by a CTU bus on the road separating Sectors 45 and 46 here today. The mishap occurred when one side of the road was closed due to repair work. The accident occurred at 6 pm when Shashi Sharma, a resident of Sector 56, was on a bike with his brother-in-law Manoj riding pillion.

Enraged over police inaction after the death of a girl of Kahlon village, who succumbed to burn injuries today, residents of Kahlon village blocked the Mohali-Sohana-Kharar road here for over two hours.

Harjinder Singh City lad 70th in civil services exam

An IRS officer of the 2008 batch and graduate from the PEC University of Technology, currently posted in Allahabad, city topper Harjinder Singh has scored an all-India 70th rank in the civil services exam this time. Despite having completed 16 months of training in the IRS, Harjinder had continued preparations for the UPSC exam and finally entered the top 100 in his last attempt.

Badal’s wife admitted to PGI

Surinder Kaur, wife of Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, was admitted to the PGI after her condition became serious here today. UT Adviser bats for development projects

With major development projects underway in Chandigarh, the UT Administration today sought financial powers on par with other union territories. Metro DPR chugs off

The detailed project report (DPR) for the Chandigarh Metro is making progress. A meeting was held by VK Singh, UT finance secretary, Chandigarh Administration, with a team of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) executive director SD Sharma and representatives of the Punjab and Haryana and Punjab Engineering College (PEC) University.

7 heads of cattle burnt in mishap
Zirakpur, May 12
Two heads of buffaloes and five calves were burnt alive while 24 others were injured in a fire that broke out in a cattle shed at Bishanpura village here this afternoon. The animals belonged to Soma and Jasmair Singh who alleged that the fire erupted due to short-circuit from electricity wires near the shed.

68-year-old man hit by train, dies
Zirakpur, May 12
A 68-year-old man was killed after a speeding passenger train hit him on the Dhakoli railway track here this morning. An unidentified person sustained minor injuries after he lost his balance on the motorcycle and fell down near the railway track at the same time.

IRS trainees crack civil services exam

It was a celebration time today for outstation Civil Services toppers, who are currently in the city to receive their training at the income tax department. Amit Khatri (24) and K Menaka (29), who scored All-India ranks, 11 and 29, respectively, in the Civil Services exams this time, got into the IRS in their last attempt.

Central State Library set for new look

After 56 years of coming into existence, one of the city’s oldest structures, the TS Central State Library, is getting a facelift for the first time. The Chandigarh Administration has been spending around Rs 80 lakh on the cosmetic changes of the building to give better ambience to booklovers.

Vita milk gets costlier by Rs 2

From today onwards residents of Ambala will have to shell out more to buy milk and milk products as Vita has increased its milk prices by Rs 2 per litre. Vita milk plant has also increased prices of milk products, including ghee, butter, curd and milk powder, from today in Ambala, Kurukshetra, Yamunanagar and Panchkula districts.

Man accused of rape by wife

The police has registered a rape case against the mahant of a dera of Ambala City today. According to the police report, the wife of the mahant, who had been living separately for the past several years in the dera campus, alleged that the mahant entered in her room late last night and raped her.

2 killed in road mishaps

Two persons were killed in separate road accidents near here today. According to information, Parveen Kumar, a student of a high school of Balana village was killed while crossing the Ambala-Hisar road. The police said he was hit by a car.

The UT Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum (I) has directed the Chandigarh Music Centre to refund Rs 464, the cost of CDs, to a city resident, Rashim Sharma, for giving wrong CDs. The forum also ordered it to pay Rs 1,000 as costs of litigation.
