Gang of looters busted, five arrested
Amritsar, June 4
The police busted a gang of looters and arrested five of its members here on Friday.Two country-made pistols of .12 bore with four live cartridges, one pistol of .315 bore with two live cartridges besides sharp-edged weapons were seized.

Hoshiarpur : Believe it or not, the District Congress Committee (DCC) and the newly formed district unit of People’s Party of Punjab (PPP) are running their respective party offices in the same building at Hoshiarpur. 

2 lakh saplings to be planted in forest
Hoshiarpur, June 4
As many as 2.12 lakh tree saplings will be planted in Hoshiarpur forest division during the ensuing monsoons to make the area pollution free.Besides, 50,000 saplings would be provided free of cost to educational institutions and paramilitary forces and 75,000 on subsidised rates.

In order to bring in the requisite reforms in the education system, the Punjab Government would ensure direct involvement of people by organising seminars at all levels.

The number of gastroenteritis cases has risen at Kasupur village in Shahkot. The number of villagers admitted to Shahkot Civil Hospital having symptoms of diarrhoea, vomiting and breathlessness rose to above 30. More than 20 patients were admitted to private hospitals, it was also learnt.

Widespread support for Baba Ramdev’s agitation
Jalandhar, June 4
Citizens of Jalandhar lent support to Baba Ramdev’s ant-corruption agitation by holding a dharna in front of the DC complex here today.Apart from the Bharat Swabhiman Sangathan and the Patanjali Yog Samiti, others who lent their support included members of the BJP, Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) and representatives from social bodies and NGOs of the city.

Gang of looters busted, five arrested

The police busted a gang of looters and arrested five of its members here on Friday.Two country-made pistols of .12 bore with four live cartridges, one pistol of .315 bore with two live cartridges besides sharp-edged weapons were seized.

Those arrested were Sunny of New Model Town, Chheharta, Deepak Kumar of Shimla Market, Putlighar, Prince of Gawal Mandi, Putlighar, Suraj Chouhan of Gali Kapooran Wali near Gurdwara Pipli Sahib, and Prince Kumar of Sewa Nagar, Ram Tirath Road. Jatin of Khuh Kundian Wala, Sandhu Colony, managed to escape.

The police has registered a case under Sections 399, 402, 379 and 379-B of the IPC and Section 25 of the Arms Act against them.

The police said the cantonment police received an information that the accused had made a gang and used to loot people. Armed with weapons, they were sitting in a park in the Sewa Nagar area where they were planning for commit a crime.

The police said a raid was conducted and the police arrested the accused and also recovered two motorcycles from them besides arms and sharp-edged weapons.

Mysterious death

Batala: Parents of a woman, who died on Thursday, have accused her in-laws of smothering her to death. The parents of the deceased alleged they were informed that their daughter had died of electrocution but when they saw her body, they suspected a foul play.

SHO Ghomman Baldev Singh said the body had been sent to the Civil Hospital for autopsy and appropriate action would be taken after receiving the report.

The deceased’s in-laws rejected the allegations and said the death was due to electrocution. The woman was married to Vachiter Singh of Ladha Munda village and had two children.

Graves damaged

Hoshiarpur: The Tanda police arrested Jagtar Singh of Kurala village for damaging ancestral graves of Barkat Ali’ forefathers. He was booked under Section 297 of the IPC.

Vice-President of a welfare committee of the Gujjar community Barkat Ali of Dehriwal, in his complaint, alleged that on Thursday, Jagtar Singh damaged ancestral graves of his forefathers thus hurting his sentiments.

Cong, PPP function under one roof

Hoshiarpur: Believe it or not, the District Congress Committee (DCC) and the newly formed district unit of People’s Party of Punjab (PPP) are running their respective party offices in the same building at Hoshiarpur. 

Offices of both the parties are located in the inn of RB Jodha Mal Kuthiala at local Adda Mahilpur. The DCC has acquired all the three rooms on the first floor. The PPP office bearers have acquired three rooms on the ground floor of the inn. The signboard of the party office has been displayed on the main gate of the inn and in the absence of signboard of Congress, majority of its party workers are under this impression that the DCC has shifted its office. — OC

2 lakh saplings to be planted in forest

Govt to hold seminars on education reforms

In order to bring in the requisite reforms in the education system, the Punjab Government would ensure direct involvement of people by organising seminars at all levels.

Sewa Singh Sekhwan, state Education Minister, said under this program the government has decided to involve village Sarpanches, chairmen of Rural Education Development Committee and Urban Education Development Committee and has asked to organise seminars in this direction.

The Education Minister was speaking during a seminar organised under education reforms and awareness campaign at Guru Nanak Auditorium here today.

Sewa Singh Sekhwan said the government has constituted Punjab State Education Advisory Board and Committee for formation of a policy on education reforms for 25 years besides education reforms committee and a committee for proper implementation of Right to Education Act in the state.

These committees would submit their reports with six months.

The number of gastroenteritis cases has risen at Kasupur village in Shahkot. The number of villagers admitted to Shahkot Civil Hospital having symptoms of diarrhoea, vomiting and breathlessness rose to above 30. More than 20 patients were admitted to private hospitals, it was also learnt.

SMO Veena Paul said though the situation was under control, villagers out of fear are visiting hospitals for checkup.

Youngest of the patients admitted to the Civil Hospital were six-month-old Jasmeen and two-year-old Jagveer.

Symptoms of the water-borne disease were also reported from Gauns Mohalla at Nakodar. SMO Nakodar Civil Hospital Roop Lal maintained that the condition of six people became serious after they had contaminated water yesterday. He said water samples had been sent for testing.

Sources said in order to accommodate large number of patients, the authorities of Shahkot Civil Hospital have installed more beds in addition to 30 beds in the general ward. Medical teams have started checkup camps.

Representatives of bodies like the India Against Corruption, Green Movement, Pahal, Punjab Jagriti Manch, Sikh Talmel Committee, District War Association, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Society, Punjab Press Club and many others, participated in the dharna.

Nawanshahr: With a view to expressing solidarity with the fast being observed by Baba Ramdev at Ramleela Ground in New Delhi to press the Union Government for enacting strict laws to eradicate corruption and to bring back black money allegedly deposited in the foreign banks, the local Arya Samaj organised a havan yajna here on the premises of RK Arya College on Saturday.

Similarly, the activists of the district unit of Patanjali Yoga Samiti and Bharat Swabhiman Trust also held a dharna here in front of the District Administrative Complex to endorse the issues raised by Baba Ramdev.

Hoshiarpur: Hundreds of activists under the banner of Patanjali Yog Samiti, Bharat Swabhimaan Trust, Shiv Sena (Bal Thackeray), Brahmin Sabha and Bharat Vikas Parishad held a dharna in front of district court complex here today in support of Baba Ramdev’s fast.
