Environment Day Today
Banjar (Kullu), June 4 The trash and junk is either dumped into the river or is burnt which produces harmful gases causing air pollution in the area. The town, having a population of over 10,000 residents, has emerged as a nerve centre for the people of Seraj and Banjar and as tourists visiting the GHNP, Soja and Jalori Pass, Rampur and Kinnaur start their uphill journey from here. “The waste that litters the nullah has become a feeding ground for monkeys, crows and vultures. The monkeys then invade into the apple orchards and polyhouses set up by farmers in the nearby villages,” resented farmers. “I daily watch rehris of the nagar panchayat and residents emptying their waste baskets into the nullah which further end in the Jhibhi river,” rued Ranvijay Thakur, a retired joint director, horticulture, who lives opposite the nullah. “We have made several pleas before the local administration and the nagar panchayat, but nothing has been done to save the river from pollution,” he added. The government has launched the “polythene hatao, pariavaran bachao” campaign but the State Environment Protection and Pollution Control Board has never bothered to check pollution in the Jhibhi river. Loads of polythene and non-biodegradable waste litter the Jhibhi river which further joins the Tirthan river at the Banjar town bridge. “The waste can damage the trout habitat Tirthan, hence, its tributaries are being protected for preserving freshwater fish,” said Dr BD Sharma, Director, Fisheries. The local mill owners on the Jhibhi river resented that the junk and trash emitted unbearable stench. “It is difficult to live here as sewage from the leaking septic tanks find its way into the river,” the farmers rued. President of the Banjar Naggar panchayat Arun Sharma expressed his helplessness saying, “We are facing a lot of problem in disposing the solid waste daily. The proposal of the site awaits sanction from the government.” Banjar tehsildar KR Bhardwaj, who is looking after the local administration as the SDM has been transferred, said, ”We have asked to transfer forest land for the dumping site about 4 km upstream, but it has not been done so far. So we have asked the nagar panchayat to burn the solid waste at the site.” |
Ramdev’s fast draws support in state
Mandi, June 4 It also received a good response from the RSS, VHP, BJP and other saffron organisations and NGOs, who have earlier supported the similar Anna Hazare’s indefinite fast in support of the Lokpal Bill against corruption. BJP leaders from Mandi Sadar like Kanhiya Lal and Dr Raju and others joined the strike against corruption. Left-supported anganwari workers staged a rally in support of their demands and submitted a memorandum to the DC. 20 sit on
indefinite fast
DHARAMSALA: The Kangra unit of the Bharat Swabhimaan Trust in support of their leader Baba Ramdev and his fight against corruption sat on an indefinite fast on the premises of the Deputy Commissioner office here today. “Twenty members (yoga gurus) of the organisation began their fast and at least 40 members will be participating at the chain fast. At least 1,200 members were present in the support of Ramdev’s fight against corruption,” said Jagdev Thakur, district coordinator and district president of Bharat Swabhimaan. Thakur and other members echoed that the stir was not against any party or any political person but Baba has started satyagraha against the corrupt and seeks to bring back the black money. The organisation recommended the government to stop printing Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes to curb corruption. “The stir will continue till the government fulfils our demands in writing,” said the district coordinator. In Dharamsala around 1,500 (till 5 pm) persons supported the agitation on day one by participating in the signature campaign. |
