Irregularities in paddy purchase alleged
Hisar, November 5 Talking to The Tribune here today, sabha spokesperson Dayanand Poonia said large-scale irregularities were taking place in the procurement of paddy at the grain market of Hansi township near here. He said besides cheating innocent farmers with delay tactics, the officials concerned were not even paying them the amount fixed by the government. Mr Poonia said while the purchase was shown at rates fixed by the government, the farmers were paid a lesser amount. To register their protest against these irregularities, the kisan sabha started an indefinite dharna at the Hansi grain market yesterday. Earlier, irate farmers also blocked vehicular traffic in the township, but to no avail. The state president of the sabha, Mr Phool Singh Sheokand, addressed the protesters and assured them that they would continue their struggle till their demand of prompt procurement at government rates was met and the irregularities stopped. While the Hisar Deputy Commissioner, Mr Arun Kumar Gupta, was out of station, the Hansi SDM, Mr Satish Jain, went to see the protesting farmers, who apprised him of their demands. The protesters complained to the SDM that even the purchased paddy was not being lifted on the pretext of high moisture content. The farmers said they were being harassed by the officials concerned by withholding their payments and adopting delay tactics. They demanded that their produce be procured at the government rate of Rs 600 per quintal and ensure that their purchased paddy was lifted at the earliest. Meanwhile, the kisan sabha has decided to hold a meeting at Hansi tomorrow to chalk out the further course of action. |

INLD demands Natwar’s sack
Chandigarh, November 5 A resolution to this effect was adopted by the Working Committee of the party, which met here yesterday under the chairmanship of the former Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala. Briefing newsmen after the meeting, the secretary-general of the INLD, Mr Ajay Singh Chautala, and the president of the Haryana unit, Mr Ashok Arora, said criminal cases should be registered against Mr Natwar Singh as well as the Congress President, Mrs Sonia Gandhi. They said the INLD would urge the Election Commission to cancel the recognition of the Congress as a political party as it had allegedly resorted to corrupt practices in taking commission from foreign companies. The INLD leaders said the Volcker committee had prepared its report on the basis of the documents provided to it by various Iraqi Ministries. Therefore, it was difficult to put a question mark on its findings. They alleged said that while on the one hand the report had exposed Mr Natwar Singh, on the other it had put Mrs Gandhi also in the dock. Row over auditorium project conversion
Ambala, November 5 The auditorium was supposed to be constructed on land adjoining the Fire Brigade on the Jagadhari road. The then Chief Minister Mr Om Prakash Chautala, had laid the foundation for the project. The auditorium, however, could not see the light of the day. Now, a project for a shopping complex has been sanctioned under the Integrated Development of Small & Medium Towns. The proposed shopping complex is going to be constructed on the same land which was earlier earmarked for the Guru Gobind Singh auditorium. The change from an auditorium to a shopping complex has irked the local Sikh community. Kendriya Gurudwara Prabhandhak Committee general secretary B.S. Bindra strongly condemned the move to change the project. He demanded that the auditorium in Ambala Sadar should be constructed as per the announcement of the previous Chautala government. Former Ambala Cantonment MLA Anil Vij said they would strongly oppose the shopping complex project. “To mark the Guru Gobind Singh centenary celebrations, the auditorium was named after Shri Guru Gobind Singh,” he said. Mr Anil Vij said a model of the auditorium had been prepared by an architect. “To mobilise resources for the auditorium project, it was decided that the Municipal Council, Ambala Sadar, will sell land in the Housing Board and the money will be used for capital investment. At that time, the Municipal Council was headed by the BJP which refused to sell land and the matter was ultimately taken up with the then CM,” he said. He said it was at that juncture that the local Sikh community came forward and expressed willingness to manage the Shri Guru Gobind Singh auditorium from its own resources. “Thereafter, Mr Chautala had announced a sum of Rs 5 lakh for the project. Although the cheque for Rs 5 lakh was prepared, the money could not be released as the code of conduct was in force,” he said. Executive Officer, Municipal Council, Ambala Sadar, K.K. Jain said that even though the foundation stone for the auditorium had been laid, the Municipal Council had not received any payment under the Sarkar Apke Dwar programme of the previous government. “In November, 2004, a fresh proposal was prepared for a shopping complex under the Integrated Development of Small and Medium Towns scheme. A sum of Rs 1.09 crore is required for the shopping complex of which Rs 71 lakh has already been received. Soil testing of the land has been carried out and tenders have been invited from architects,” he said. Mr K.K. Jain said the shopping complex was going to be called the Guru Gobind Singh shopping complex. He said that about 30-32 shops were likely to be constructed at the shopping complex which would be constructed adjoining the Fire Brigade. |
