Migratory birds arrive
Yamunanagar, October 26 The department has prepared a plan and the monitoring of birds has started, claimed sources. birds coming from China, Siberia, Russia and Central Asia would be monitored. The department was in touch with Chaudhary Charan Singh Agriculture University and Wildlife Institute, Dehra Dun. The Chief Wildlife Warden, Mr R.D. Jakati, could not be contacted but the sources said the
preparedness of the department and more steps and equipment were required to deal with the situation would come up for discussion at the meeting. The Ministry of Environment and Forests had alerted the department and asked it to frame an action plan. Three species barheaded goose, great black headed gull and great cormorant have arrived in India and may be carrying the infection. The ministry had asked the department to monitor the birds dying of avian disease and report back immediately. As per reports, a few pairs of greyleg goose are at the Sultanpur National Bird Sanctuary. Every year from October onwards, several migratory birds come to Hathnikund barrage (Yamunanagar), Sultanpur, Bhinderwas, Madkola lake and Kurukshetra. According to Mr Jagdish Chander, Wildlife Divisional Officer (Yamunanagar) these birds during their stay till March laid eggs here. Pelicans were the last among the migratory birds to visit this part of the country. The department has asked its officials to conduct a post mortem of birds which are suspected to have died of infection and take care while disposing of the carcasses. The department has procured disposable uniforms and is in the process of acquiring specific kits and gloves. |
Mehra’s run from law over
Panipat, October 26 He was sent on a 14-day of judicial remand this afternoon after he was produced in the court of the CJM. Mehra surrendered before the DSP (City), Mr Varinder Vij, on Tuesday evening after the apex court cancelled his SLP on October 24. The officer was evading arrest and it lead to the arrest of his brother to get information. Before proceeding to the court, he was taken to the Bhim Sain Sachhar Hospital this morning for the medical examination. Escorted by DSP Vij, he was looking physically fit and later taken to the Karnal jail, police sources said. Police sources said the officer was avoiding the police despite the fact he was facing serious charges of rape. The officer was wanted in a rape case as a girl from Gannaur in Sonepat had levelled serious allegations of rape against him in November last year. A case was registered in Panipat where he was posted as the city Magistrate at that time. He had been accused of marrying a girl without disclosing his marital status. The officer was married and had a daughter from his first marriage. Posted as SDM at Gulha in Kaithal district, the officer was also reported to be absent from duty. |

Panel to review textbooks
Chandigarh, October 26 Addressing a press conference at the Congress party office here, he said he had constituted a committee to review the textbooks used by the schools in various classes. He said the members of the committee would be Dr Surendra Kumar of Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak, Ms Sneh Mahajan, Director of DAV Public Schools, Delhi, Ms Geeta Paul, Assistant Project Coordinator, Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan, Chandigarh, Dr R.S. Baliwala of Kurukshetra University and Baburam Masih of Government Girls College, Karnal. While Mr Pawan Sharma, general secretary, Haryana College Teachers Union, Jagadhari, would be the convener of the committee, the chairman would be Professor Lal Chand Gupta of Kurukshetra University. He indicated that the committee had been formed in view of the recent controversy erupting over a poem in a textbook being taught in a private school in Hisar. He said the committee would submit its report to the state government and try to pursue it for the implementation of its recommendations. Asked whether the committee had been constituted in consultation with the PCC chief, Mr Bhajan Lal, Mr Ram Prakash snapped back, “I am not going to discuss the internal matters of the party in front of the press or at any other public platform”. He also announced that the party would launch a campaign in the state to improve sex ratio. He said the party would also appeal to social organisations and political parties to join hands with the Congress and mobilise public opinion on the issue. He added that the Congress would join the yatra organised by Swami Agnivesh on the issue in November. Congress volunteers would join the yatra when it passed through Haryana on its way to Amritsar. He said he himself, along with the Chief Minister, Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, would participate in an iftar party at Hodal on Saturday. The party was being organised by a local panchayat that was known for its role in preserving communal harmony in troubled times, he said. He said 10,000 persons were expected to take part in the function. When the press conference was over and the reporters were leaving, they were supplied a press note about a public meeting being organised at Jagadhari in Yamunanagar on November 6 for felicitating Mr Ram Prakash on his appointment as the working president. The release was issued by one Mr Bhupal Singh Bhati, member of the HPCC. A similar programme held at Karnal earlier had attracted protest from Mr Bhajan Lal, who had said the meeting should have been organised after consulting him. |
Youth jailed in abduction case
Bhiwani, October 26 Dalbir Singh of Prem nagar of Charkhi Dadri had lodged a report with the police that his minor daughter had been watching television on the night of November 16 while he was sleeping nearby. The next morning he found his daughter had gone missing. Dalbir had alleged that one of his neighbours, Som, alias Sombir, son of Kapoor Singh of Nogavan village, had lured his daughter and abducted her. According to the prosecution, Anita and Sombir visited Charkhi Dadri on November 26. Anita had said in her statement to the police that her father had been forcing her into wrong deeds and she had eloped with Sombir just to insult her father. Som had promised to marry her, she said. The police had then registered a case against Dalbir and Som under Sections 363, 366, and 376 of the IPC. The court held Dalbir innocent and acquitted him of the charges. It acquitted Sombir of the charge set under Section 376, but convicted him under Section 363. |
Woman commits suicide
Fatehabad, October 26 The victim, Chhinder Kaur (22), was married to Vijay Singh of Alipur Bareta village last year. She was brought to the local General Hospital in a precarious condition today. Ram Swaroop, grandfather of Vijay Singh, said that Chhinder Kaur was not keeping good health for some time and had been taking medicines for that. He said that she consumed pesticide last night, taking it to be her medicine. Her condition deteriorated after some time and was rushed to the local General Hospital where she died. On the other hand, Chander Bhan, a kin of the deceased, has alleged that Chhinder’s in-laws had been harassing her ever since she was married to Vijay Singh. He alleged that they used to beat up her very frequently. He said that Chhinder Kaur had ended her life as she was fed up with the daily beatings at the hands of her in-laws. |
Less currency notes found in wads
Sonepat, October 26 According to a report, Mr B.S. Batla, Tehsildar, withdrew Rs 35.50 lakh from the local branch of the bank at Kharkhauda for the distribution of pension. When the distribution work was in progress, as many as nine notes of Rs 100 denomination were found less in one packet and 11 in another packet. The Tehsildar immediately lodged a complaint with the manager of the bank. Mr N.K. Sood, manager of the bank, claimed that the packets were prepared after counting of currency on a machine and thereafter the packets of currency were stamped and kept in the bank. He said there was no question of less counting of currency notes
found in the packets. |

Ambala, October 26 School principal Dr Vikas Kohli said rangoli, greeting card making and on the spot painting competitions were held in the school. As many as 105 students from 26 schools from different parts of Haryana and Chandigarh participated in the competition. In rangoli making competition Maj R.N. Kapoor DAV Public School, Ambala Cantt won the first position. The second position was bagged by Police DAV Public School, Ambala City, while third position went to DAV Senior Secondary Public School, Ambala City. Consolation prize was awarded to DAV Public School, Yamunanagar. In painting contest Nisha Singh of DAV Public School, Panchkula won the first prize, Kartavya Bhola of DAV Public School, Kurukshetra won the second prize while Bhavya Saini of DAV Public School, Sonepat got the third prize. Consolation prize was won by Jyotsana of DAV Public School, Panipat. In greeting card making contest, Aahuti of DAVM Public School, Sonepat, was first, Meghna Sharma of Police DAV Public School, Ambala City was second while Mrinal Sharma of Hansraj Public School, Panchkula got the third prize. Sachin of OS DAV Public School Kaithal won the consolation prize. |
Two arrested for demanding ransom
Sonepat, October 26 According to a report, the arrested youths were identified as Anoop and Manoj of Pinana village and they, during the course of interrogation, told the police that they had stolen a motor cycle from the premises of Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak, and snatched a car from Israna village in Panipat district as well as another vehicle. The complainant, it may be recalled, had received a phone call for the first time on September 25 last and again on October 18 and October 21 demanding Rs 2 lakh as ransom from him by some unidentified persons. Acting on the complaint the police arrested both the youths. |

Ambala, October 26 The rally in Ambala City was flagged off by Superintendent of Police, Ambala, Mr Rajbir Deswal, while the rally in Ambala Cantt was flagged off by the Deputy Commissioner, Mr J.P. Kaushik. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Kaushik said habitation is important for people. He said rally would draw attention of the people towards the need to provide habitation to everyone and to give basic services in the slums. In Ambala City, the rallyists started from Police Lines and passed through Mixi chowk, old hospital and Panchayat Bhavan. In Ambala Cantt, the rally started from War Heroes Memorial Stadium and passed through Kabadi Bazar, Nicholson Road, Sadar Bazar, Vijay Ratan Chowk, Rai Market and Capital Chowk. |

Ambala October 26 The hearse van was put into service by the Ambala Cantt MLA Mr Devender Bansal at a function was held near Indra Park yesterday. Mr Bansal said he would try to arrange a grant of Rs 1 lakh for running the hearse van while he made a personal contribution of Rs 5000. Sahayata Sadan secretary Gian Bansal and president Devender Singh Kohli said that the hearse van service was for Ambala Cantt. 1 killed, 11 hurt in road mishap
Panipat, October 26 The ill-fated vehicle was carrying teachers along with two students. At least four of those seriously injured were referred to other hospitals. Hospital sources said that rest of the injured were discharged after treatment. |
3 held for stealing diesel
Ambala, October 26 The CIA-II staff received a tip-off yesterday that a private fuel tanker and a jeep are parked in
Gada-Bada. The police raiding party found that diesel from the tanker was being transferred to a drum kept inside the jeep through a metal pipe. The vehicles were taken to Weight and Measures Department officials who found 140 litres of diesel in the drum. Three persons — Parvinder Singh, Talwinder Singh and Karnail Singh — have been arrested. |

Yamunanagar, October 25 Sanjay, a resident of the area, found the baby covered with a jute bag. There was no clothes on the body of the infant. The police has been informed. |
