Action against factory owners sought
Tribune News Service

Panipat, October 30
Demanding action against the factory owners who beat the union leaders and labourers up, various national and state-level employee organisations held a protest public meeting at Circus Ground, here today. Situation in Panipat has turned tense with a large number of labourers gathering at the heavily guarded venue and vowing to launch an indefinite agitation if their demands were not considered by November 5.

Condemning the action in which union leaders P.P. Kapoor, Jai Bhagwan and labourers of pit loom industry were beaten up, Mr R.C. Jagga, secretary of the Sarv Karamchari Sangh, a state-level government employees organisation cautioned the state government to learn from the Gurgaon episode before taking a stance in favour of industrialists.

Talking to the media at PWD Rest House here, he alleged that the police was working in connivance with the pit loom factory owners to muzzle workers. He said that the police was shielding the erring. He said that the sangh would support the agitating workers.

Mr Jagga termed the manhandling of The Tribune correspondent as unfortunate and criticised the role of the police where factory owners without provocation beat the two persons outside the police station.

A member of the National Committee of the IFTU, Dr Aparna criticised the district administration for converting the labour problem into the law and order problem. Coming heavily on the police and the administration, she said that the two injured leaders were forced to sit in the police station for more than five hours and no first aid was provided to them.

Demanding suspension of all cops of the Model Town Police Station, she alleged that, Ram Phal SHO of Chandi Bagh Police Station threatened Kapoor to ready a compromise with the factory owners. Mr Kapoor also alleged that Ram Phal allegedly snatched his mobile phone and did not let him talk to anybody.

Mr Balli is at the centre of controversy ever since Ms Gill has got recorded her statement before the police. Ms Gill, a Dalit, had alleged that Mr Balli had been making passes at her and seeking sexual favour from her and when she refused to oblige, he allegedly started discriminating her against due to caste and gender.

Mr Balli, who has been maintaining silence since then talked to reporters in the PWD Rest House here today.

Three Zila Parishad members, Mr Ajit Singh, Mr Om Parkash Bagri and Mr Sukhwinder Singh and Block Samiti, Rattia, Chairperson, Ms Nirmal Jit Kaur were present on the occasion.

They said that though there was no substance in the allegations of Ms Gill, Deputy Commissioner, O.P. Langayan and Superintendent of Police, Bhim Singh had tried to evolve a compromise between the chairman and the vice-chairperson and Mr Balli had even offered to tender an apology if his words had hurt the vice-chairperson, but Ms Gill, was adamant on a written apology.

Earlier, Ms Gill also talked to reporters and alleged that the district administration had been pressurising her into withdrawing allegations against the Zila Parishad Chairman.
