Cops beat up couple; villagers block traffic
Lakhanmajra (Rohtak), October 14 According to Mr Sikander Singh, he and his wife Promila were going to the latter’s ancestral village, Chiri, near here on his bike when they were stopped near a petrol pump by two cops around 2 pm. He alleged that he revealed their identities to the cops but one of them said his wife looked like a call girl and they could detain her for the night. He said when they resisted the cops hit them with their sticks. As they fell down the cops hit them repeatedly and injured them. A woman passer-by, who recognised the girl and tried to intervene, was also assaulted. Soon a crowd of villagers gathered at the busy crossing and blocked traffic. When the news reached the woman’s village Chiri, hundreds of its residents also arrived on the scene. Incidentally, Chiri village falls in the Kiloi Assembly constituency represented by the Chief Minister, Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda. The mob pelted stones on the police at which the policemen retreated. Row over chapter on Guru Gobind Singh
Hisar, October 14 The party has warned the government that if the textbook was not banned within 15 days, their party will launch a massive agitation. The party has also sought action against the school authorities for hurting the sentiments of the Sikh community by including this book in their course curriculum. Mr Sukhsagar Singh, president of the district unit of SAD, alleged that chapter 10 in “Bhasha Manjsri” book for class VI students of Delhi Public School, Hisar, contained factually incorrect and baseless remarks against Guru Gobind Singh and Sikhs, in general. He pointed out that in the aforesaid chapter, which is a write-up by Rabindra Nath Tagore, the tenth Sikh Guru has been presented in bad light. It is mentioned in the chapter that Guru Gobind Singh beheaded a Pathan when the latter asked him to pay for some horses bought by him. Earlier, when the Guru asks the pathan to come on the next day, the Pathan remarks that all “dusht” Sikhs appeared to be thieves. “The instance of Guru Gobind Singh bringing up the Pathan’s son and later instigating him to kill the Guru is nowhere in history,” the SAD leader maintained, adding that it gave an impression that Guru Gobind Singh had been disillusioned with life, which is not true. “Moreover, the chapter projects the Guru as a depressed person, who loses temper and kills the Pathan, which he later regrets. “The writer referred to Guru Gobind Singh as an old man, whereas in reality the Guru had passed away when he was 42,” he added. |

Bhiwani, October 14 A farmer and local resident, Rati Ram, had filed a petition with the court last year, stating his fields were located near water works, situated on the Tosham road. In 1977, about 100 acres including his land, had been submerged under water due to damage in the Jui canal and he could not sow his kharif crop and had to bear a loss of thousands of rupees. According to the petition, the department paid the compensation by releasing a list of the affected persons but deprived him of the compensation. His repeated requests made to the authorities proved futile and he was left with no other means but to approach the court. While hearing the case, the Civil Judge, Junior division, Ms Narender Kaur, had directed the Irrigation Department on May 1, 2004, to pay Rs 91,000, along with 12 per cent interest, as compensation to the plaintiff. The department filed an appeal in the Sessions Court against the decision of the lower court. The court of the Additional District Judge, had upheld the decision of the lower court but non-compliance of the order led the court to attach the official vehicle of the Superintending Engineer of the department. |
