BJP nominee withdraws candidature from Kiloi
Rohtak, May 19 Moreover, it cannot even put up another candidate since its covering candidate’s papers have already been rejected after scrutiny. Interestingly, the BJP nominee declared that he was withdrawing in favour of Mr Bhupender Singh Hooda and also issued an appeal to the party voters to vote for the Chief Minister. A senior BJP leader said off the record that Mr Ram Bhaj Hooda had not informed the party of his decision. Senior party leaders learnt of the withdrawal from mediapersons. Mr Hooda said he was under tremendous pressure from Kiloi voters to withdraw from the race. He said when he had contested the seat in February 2000 he had promised the voters that in case Mr Bhupender Singh Hooda ever became the Chief Minister he would not contest against him to ensure development of the constituency. He added that although he had forgotten his promise at the time of filing his papers but the voters reminded him when he began his campaign. “Almost every village collectively told me not to put hurdles in Kiloi’s road to success. I have to bow to the wishes of the people,” Mr Hooda said. He said it was his decision. Asked if he was quitting the party, he replied that it was for the party to decide whether to keep him or throw him out. Mr Ram Bhaj Hooda had contested the Kiloi seat in 2000 and had polled nearly 3,000 votes as an Independent after he was denied the HVP ticket. He joined the BJP at the time of May 2004 Lok Sabha poll. CHANDIGARH:
Five candidates were left in the contest in the Tosham assembly constituency, including Mrs Kiran Chaudhary of the Congress. The seat fell vacant due to the death of her husband, Mr Surender Singh, who was the Agriculture and Revenue Minister in the Hooda Cabinet. The others in the fray are Mr Jitender, Mr Mir Singh, Mr Balwan and Mr Mangal Singh
Khareta, all Independents. Only 12 candidates were left in the Hisar assembly constituency after the last day of withdrawal today. They are Mrs Savitri Jindal of the Congress and Mr Rajender, Mr Raj Kumar, Mr
M.L. Sehgal, Mr Subhash Khundia, Mr Yog Raj, Mr Surender, Mr Ram Kumar, Mr Ram Niwas, Ms Gayatri Devi, Ms Bimla Devi and Mr Raj Kumar, all Independents. |
Expelled for betrayal
Rohtak: The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) today expelled Mr Ram Bhaj Hooda who withdrew his nomination papers as the party candidate from Kiloi Assembly seat earlier in the day in favour of Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.
Although senior party leaders avoided speaking to the media about this episode throughout the day, the Rohtak district unit chief, Mr Kanwal Singh Saini, said in a press note late this evening that Mr Hooda had been expelled for six years for "having stabbed the party in its back at the behest of the Congress". He said the Congress had been shaken by the "tough challenge" posed by the BJP and it used its "time tested tactics" to lure Mr Hooda. He added that the Congress had always used "undemocratic" tactics whether it was Jharkhand, Goa and now Haryana. He said the party had in a communication to the Election Commission demanded a probe into the episode by an independent agency. He also demanded that the election from Kiloi should be countermanded.

Congress has side-stepped SYL issue: INLD
Kurukshetra, May 19 He has pointed out that during the Jind rally neither Mr. Bhupinder Singh Hooda, nor his ministers or MPs and MLAs mentioned the issue during the rally. By sidestepping this important subject, the Congress leaders had made it amply clear that for the Congress, the SYL and the share of Haryana in the riverwaters was an issue to be exploited at the time of elections alone. Mr Arora regretted that none of the local Congress leaders, including the Chief Minister, not only failed to exert pressure on Mrs Gandhi regarding the repealing of the Act, but did not even mention the SYL. This had led to considerable dejection among the people, he claimed. |

CM for higher Central subsidy on solar pumps
Chandigarh, May 19 In a letter to the Union Minister of State for Non-Conventional Energy Sources, Mr Vilas Muttamwar, Mr Hooda said so far 393 solar pumps had been installed in the state during the past three years from 2000-01. The state Government had provided an additional matching subsidy of Rs 40,000 per pump so that more small farmers with a land holding of 2 acres to 3 acres might purchase these pumps to meet their irrigation needs. While drawing the attention of the Union Minister to the reduction in the amount of Central financial assistance, which had been reduced from Rs 135 per watt to Rs 100 per watt, Mr Hooda said that it had resulted in the increase in the contribution of farmers from Rs 40,500 to Rs 1,03,500 for the purchase of such pumps. As a result of this increase, he said, the farmers were not able to purchase the pumps and the state could not implement this programme during 2004-05. A large number of farmers had submitted their applications to the Haryana State Energy Development Agency (HAREDA) for the installation of these pumps. Meanwhile, a spokesman of the Haryana Department of Renewable Energy said that the cost of a solar pump of 1,800 watt was Rs 3.23 lakh.
