Theft in Punjabi Bagh Gurdwara
New Delhi, May 19 The theft was noticed by the gurdwara functionaries when they arrived for the morning prayers. The police were immediately informed and a case registered. Senior officers and the crime team also rushed to the spot. The police said that they found a rear window of the gurdwara open and believe that the intruders may have used that to gain access to the sanctum sanctorum where the palanquin was kept. The police said that some fingerprints had been lifted and the night chowkidar was being questioned. Hundreds of devotees thronged the gurdwara after the news of the theft spread in the predominantly Punjabi colony. The gurdwara is very popular and a large number of devotees go there in the early morning hours. Sikh religious leaders living near Gurdwara Singh Sabha of Punjabi Bagh said that the thieves had sliced off gold from the arms of the palanquin where the sacred Guru Granth Sahib is placed. ‘’One gold palanquin costs around Rs 2.5 million. The worth of the gold stolen from this palanquin is more than Rs 500,000,’’ Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) chief Paramjit Singh Sarna, who lives in the area said. The police believe that the suspects may have first examined the place before striking and must have come equipped with the cutters. The employees of the gurdwara were also being questioned to ascertain if they had seen any suspicious person lurking inside in the last few days. Further investigations were continuing. |
Lid off spurious drugs factory
New Delhi, May 19 The suspect was identified as Rakesh Kumar who had established a factory in his residence at village Hameedpur in North-West Delhi for manufacturing spurious drugs, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr Tajendra Luthra, said. Sleuths of the Crime Branch received information that the suspect was involved in manufacturing and supplying spurious drugs in various parts of the national Capital. While developing the information, the sleuths came in contact with an official of the M/s ZYG Pharma Private Limited who conformed that the spurious drugs were being manufactured by some people. The Crime Branch constituted a special team under the leadership of Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mr Kumar Gyanesh. The area where the drugs were manufactured was zeroed down and a decoy sent to the suspect for the purchase of Quadrederm tube used for skin disease. When the deal was struck, the suspect was overpowered by the police. During the search of the factory premises, huge quantity of finished products, raw materials and infrastructure worth Rs 2 lakh were seized, the DCP said. The police said that the medicine was used for the treatment of skin disease. Salt and chemical used in the medicine manufactured by the suspect are absolutely different, which could prove disastrous for the skin ailment, resulting in the side-effects. During interrogation, the suspect disclosed that he had been involved in the racket for the last four months. Initially he worked with a pharmaceutical company for a couple of years where he learnt the technique of manufacturing medicines. He did his graduation in commerce from University of Delhi in 1992 and a computer course from NIIT, Madhuban Chowk, the DCP said. |
HC orders compensation in killing by bulls
New Delhi, May 19 A Division Bench of Chief Justice B C Patel and Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, which had taken suo motu cognisance of the reports about the killings, directed the MCD to pay the compensation to the petitioners within four weeks. The court fixed Thursday to decide whether to deduct the compensation amount from the salaries of two MCD officials responsible for the areas in question. Maintaining that there was no direct negligence on the part of the civic agency, MCD counsel O P Saxena said this is for the first time that a court has held a civic agency liable for acts committed by stray cattle and awarded compensation to the victims’ families. The court awarded compensation of Rs 2.57 lakh to the husband and three children of Rani Devi, alias Rama Devi, a 45-year-old housewife, who was killed by a bull in Preet Vihar area of East Delhi in February. The MCD will have to shell out only Rs 1.75 lakh as Rs 1 lakh had already been paid as ex gratia by the Delhi Government to Rama Devi’s family. Out of the rest Rs 1.75 lakh, her husband will get Rs 1 lakh while her three children will share Rs 25,000 each, the court ordered. In the second case, the court ordered the legal heirs of deceased Chenna Ram, a 60-year-old pensioner, who was killed by the same bull in Preet Vihar, to be paid a compensation of Rs 1.80 lakh. As an amount of Rs 1 lakh had already been paid to the victim’s family, the court asked the MCD to equally distribute the rest Rs 80,000 between her two legal heirs. In the third case, the two sons of deceased Murali Nath (45), a ‘pujari’, who was killed by a bull in March in Uttam Nagar area of the city, were awarded Rs 2 lakh as damages. Since his legal heirs were not given any ex gratia payment, the court directed the Delhi Government to pay Rs 1 lakh as ex gratia and the rest Rs 1 lakh would be given by the MCD. A sum of Rs 1 lakh will be put in a fixed deposit or a post office in the name of Nath’s minor son who can withdraw it after six years or on attaining majority. He, however, would get the interest on regular intervals, the court order said. |
MCD takes steps to rein in stray cattle
New Delhi, May 19 A division bench of Chief Justice B C Patel and Justice S K Kaul today reminded the corporation that their measures shall come under periodic court scrutiny and posted the matter for May 26. In total, 644 stray cattle were rounded up from various areas of the Capital, out of which 431 from the south and central zones of the total 12 zones under the corporation between May 2-17, informed Dr P P Rajvanshi, the Director (Veterinary Services) of the Corporation through the affidavit. Special Task Force was constituted to undertake the drive that shall continue in south zone up to May 26, and thereafter it will be diverted to the trans-Yamuna areas, 15 days each in Shahdara (south and north) in east Delhi, informed Najimi Waziri, the corporation’s counsel. In all, 225 cattle were already auctioned at the Baprola Municipal Cattle Pound here with the realisation of more than Rs 5 lakh and the remaining cattle were deported to various Gosadans in the city, he further informed the court. ‘’NDMC areas have been cleared of the stray cattle, but some were found roaming the streets as they sneak in from other areas,’’ said Jyoti Singh, the counsel of the body. Earlier, the court had directed the MCD to get rid of the stray cattle from the Capital within the stipulated time, one week for south and central zones, which expires today and 15 days for the remaining zones, and ordered for the weekly monitoring of such measures. The court also directed the MCD to hire private agents to catch the cattle on the plea that the corporation lacked sufficient staff. The Delhi Police was directed to depute 150 police personnel to help the MCD in its job. |
Hostel built for women yet to open its door
New Delhi, May 19 Interestingly, the hostel was even inaugurated by Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on May 12, 2001,with much fan fare. At that time, even the CM had announced that the hostel would be thrown open for working women very soon. It was aimed at providing shelter for hundreds of working women from nearby areas like Shahdara, Viswash Nagar, Jhilmil and Patpargang Industrial Area. Most of them are migrants from the neighbouring states. The four-storeyed hostel has 60 residential rooms. Apart from this, three additional rooms have been constructed for official and other administrative works. Four kiosks have also been made inside the hostel campus to open small shops for essential commodities for the benefit of the hostel inmates. According to Ms Preeti, a councillor and the president of a social service organisation engaged in the welfare of women in that area ‘Lady Help’, the hostel was built after persistent demands by the people and social service organisations. “It is strange that the hostel could not be opened up so far due to sheer negligence of the social welfare department of the Delhi Government. We have written many times in this regard to the concerned officials but no avail,” she said. “At a time when the safety of women has become a major concern for all of us and there is a great dearth of such working women hostels in the Capital, it is definitely ironical that a complete hostel could not be operational even after more than four years of its inauguration.” “After its inauguration it had been handed over to a local social service organisation to run it on no profit no loss basis. But due to some technical reasons, there was some delay in its operation. Recently, a meeting of all concerned officials of this project was convened and we hope it will be opened very soon,” a senior officer of the project said. |

Care can propel HIV prevention
New Delhi, May 19 “Care can propel prevention as the disease is spread only through humans and if an HIV positive person is taken care of, given available treatment and taught all there is to know about the spread of the disease, he becomes a tool in its prevention,” said OXFAM HIV/AIDS Advisor Ramesh Venkataraman at seminar here today. The “Tool Kit” is part of the re-conceptualising care to include prevention methodologies and vice versa, he said, adding that the resource material pack was a result of expert consultations and a situational analysis. “The recommendations are not a panacea, but a conceptual framework for all stakeholders in this field. It is to help build capacities to promote operationalising the links between Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) roll out and prevention,” Mr Venkatraman added. According to Dr Reuben of UNAIDS, there is research evidence that proves that treatment and care of HIV patients helps in its prevention. “Treatment must go hand in hand with prevention programmes and we need stronger more innovative messages to be sent out,” he said. |
