A Hooda hoopla
Jind, May 14 The Haryana Congress working president, Mr Randeep Singh Surjewala, acknowledged the unassailable position of Mr Hooda, at least for the present, when he assured Mrs Gandhi that the Congress would again form the government in the state after five years “under the leadership of Mr Hooda”. The Finance Minister, Mr Birender Singh, who sat behind Mrs Gandhi, could not get time to address the rally, though Jind is his home district. The uncountable crowd was so enthusiastic that if reduced the bandobast of the organisers literally to ashes. It was not interested in listening to any leader. It just pressed ahead towards the dais to have a look at Mrs Gandhi. After trying to restore order initially, the police thought it prudent to retreat. The unmanageable crowd broke the wooden barriers and entered the press enclosure. Newsmen could not make head or tail of what the leaders said. They were busy in saving themselves from a near-certain stampede. They and others sitting in the special enclosures were pushed by the mob to the last barrier, separating the crowd from the VVIPs. The newsmen had to listen to the recorded speeches in the media centre to write their copy. All roads leading to Jind were blocked, with many vehicles carrying party men unable to reach the rally venue. Old-timers were reminded of an INLD rally organised at the same venue two years ago. The INLD show was much more disciplined and better organised. However, the Haryana Congress secretary, Mr Sat Pal Kaushik, said the INLD rally had a captive audience, which sat wooden-faced and was not responsive. On the other hand, he said, the Congress audience was spontaneous as it considered the government as its own. |

Heat wave hits milk yield
Karnal, May 14 Karnal recorded 40ºC today, the highest temperature of the season, while the adjoining industrial town of Panipat recorded a high of 40.5ºC. In Kurukshetra, the temperature was 39.8ºC. Most people preferred to stay indoors during the daytime. The Met Department has forecast an increase in the temperature for the next week throughout the region. The rise in the temperature has led to various diseases among people. Hundreds of cases of viral fever, diarrhoea and water-borne diseases are pouring in daily at hospitals. Doctors are having a hard time attending to the large number of patients. In Karnal district alone, more than 200 cases of malaria have been detected during the past couple of weeks. Ms Renuka Khanna, a housewife, told The Tribune: “The heat is getting unbearable. It is difficult to go out during the daytime”. She demanded that the respective district administrations should ask the managements of kindergartens and primary schools to close down for a few days so as to avoid any health risks to children. Dr J.C. Markanday, a fisheries expert and head of the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in Karnal, said that the oxygen level in ponds had started decreasing with the rise in the temperature, affecting the growth of small fish that was bred through the induced breeding system three months prior to the normal breeding season of August-September. He feared that the fish production might go down in the region this year if the weather continued to play havoc for some more time. The dry weather has started affecting the milk production in the region. A local dairy owner said the average milk arrival at his dairy had reduced by 20 to 30 per cent for the past few days. Dr P.S. Oberoi and Mr Dalip K. Gosain both senior scientists at the KVK here, are of the view that the production of milk may even decline further if the temperature continues to rise and the dry weather conditions prevail for a few more weeks. “This will result in scarcity of green fodder, affecting the milk yield of animals”, they said. |
