Hooda launches campaign from native village
Tribune News Service

Rohtak, April 15
The Leader of the Opposition in the Haryana Assembly and Congress nominee for the Rohtak Lok Sabha seat, Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, today launched his election campaign from his ancestral village Sanghi, near here.

Mr Hooda drove to the village in his specially fabricated vehicle, christened “vikalp rath”. He sought the blessings of Baba Mel Nath at a temple. Later. he proceeded to the village chaupal where he addressed a meeting.

“I have chosen to go to Chandigarh via Delhi because the political situation demands that I do so. After the Lok Sabha poll, the Assembly elections will follow within three months. Now is the time to decide whether you want your 11-year-old struggle to come to its logical conclusion”, he said.

He said the Rohtak area had been denied its due share in political power ever since Haryana came into being in 1966.

He did not mention HPCC chief Bhajan Lal but claimed that he had left the “PhDs of politics” behind in the selection of Congress nominees for the Lok Sabha poll in Haryana.

Mr Hooda criticised the Prime Minister, Mr Atal Bihari Vajpayee, saying that “there was not a single measure he had taken for the benefit of farmers or the poor.” All that the NDA government had done was to benefit the creamy layer of society.

He also came down heavily on the Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, terming him as a “liar and opportunist who deserves no sympathy”.

Wheat piles up as agents allege corruption
Our Correspondent

Sirsa, April 15
Heavy arrival of wheat in the local mandi combined with its slow lifting is causing problems for farmers as well commission agents.

Some of the agents have accused contractors of various procurement agencies of deliberately slowing down the procurement process, which has resulted in road blocks. They have also accused contractors of demanding money for lifting wheat.

One commission agent, on the condition of anonymity, told this correspondent that though wheat had been sold by him several days ago, the contractors had not cleared the space in front of his shop because he had not paid the money demanded by way of “labour fee” by them in addition to the Rs 150 and 250 for the trailer and truck, respectively. He said the big heaps of wheat lying in the mandi area had led to all roads being jammed and no fire engine could enter in case of an emergency.

District convener of the state Vyapar Mandal Rajkaran Bhatia also made similar allegations against the contractors. The slow lifting of wheat had created such a situation that people had started stacking wheat in the residential area around the mandi.

The Manager of the Sirsa Cooperative Marketing-cum-Processing Society, Mr Sultan Singh, admitted that the lifting of wheat had become a problem because of the heavy arrivals. He said about 70,000 quintals of wheat was being lifted from the mandi whereas about 1 lakh quintals of wheat was arriving daily. However, he said the procurement agencies had been informed of the situation so that the lifting process could be accelerated.

The secretary of the Sirsa Market Committee, Mr Lalchand Bhambu, said he had requested the officials concerned to speed up procurement. The problem was likely to persist for a few more days, he said.
