Wheat piles up as agents allege corruption Sirsa, April 15 Some of the agents have accused contractors of various procurement agencies of deliberately slowing down the procurement process, which has resulted in road blocks. They have also accused contractors of demanding money for lifting wheat. One commission agent, on the condition of anonymity, told this correspondent that though wheat had been sold by him several days ago, the contractors had not cleared the space in front of his shop because he had not paid the money demanded by way of “labour fee” by them in addition to the Rs 150 and 250 for the trailer and truck, respectively. He said the big heaps of wheat lying in the mandi area had led to all roads being jammed and no fire engine could enter in case of an emergency. District convener of the state Vyapar Mandal Rajkaran Bhatia also made similar allegations against the contractors. The slow lifting of wheat had created such a situation that people had started stacking wheat in the residential area around the
mandi. The Manager of the Sirsa Cooperative Marketing-cum-Processing Society, Mr Sultan Singh, admitted that the lifting of wheat had become a problem because of the heavy arrivals. He said about 70,000 quintals of wheat was being lifted from the mandi whereas about 1 lakh quintals of wheat was arriving daily. However, he said the procurement agencies had been informed of the situation so that the lifting process could be accelerated. The secretary of the Sirsa Market Committee, Mr Lalchand
Bhambu, said he had requested the officials concerned to speed up procurement. The problem was likely to persist for a few more days, he said. |
