Nain’s supporters hurt in lathi charge Hisar, February 26 Mr Nain was brought here this afternoon for a hearing in the court of Mr K.C. Sharma, Additional District and Sessions Judge, in connection with a case registered against him at the Narnaund police station seven years ago. As soon as the police team arrived at the complex along with Mr Nain, activists of the BKU started raising slogans against the state government and the police. Mr Nain has been in judicial custody in connection with a case registered against him at Jind last year. Sensing trouble the policemen present there informed their higher authorities. Some time later the SP, Mr O.P. Kadian, along with a heavy police force arrived on the scene and resorted to lathi charge on the workers. The police also rounded up a number of Mr Nain’s supporters. This angered lawyers who tried to intervene with the police on behalf of their clients. The lawyers also exchanged hot words with the SP. They raised slogans against the police authorities and forced the SP to retreat. Later, the lawyers convened a meeting of the Bar Association which asked them to suspend work in protest against the police action. It criticised the police and alleged that the SP himself had beaten up their clients. The lawyers took out a procession from the courts complex to the PWD Rest House where a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court was staying. However, the judge had left the place before they reached there. JIND: On a call given by the state unit of the BKU, for ‘Jail bharo andolan,’ nearly 50 BKU activists led by Mr Dariyao Singh Koyal, vice-president of the district unit courted arrest here on Wednesday. ROHTAK:
Farmers from Dhamar, Ladhout, Bhayyanpur, Knidwali, Teetoli, Sanuni villages falling in the Kiloi Assembly segment represented by Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Bhupinder Singh Hooda marched in procession and raised slogans against the Chautala government. According to district president Dharambir Hooda, the farmers presented themselves before police officials for courting arrest. |
Row over new car for Raj Bhavan Chandigarh, February 26 Under normal circumstances, the refusal would have been taken at its face value and no motive would have been attributed to it. However, as the Chief Minister and the Governor are not believed to be on good terms, every step taken by the Chief Minister regarding Raj Bhavan is being seen as a “clash”. Incidentally, the proposal for the purchase of a car came up before the Chief Minister on the same day (February 18) he met the Governor and reportedly discussed the casino as well as the pro-VC issues which had led to differences between the too. From Raj Bhavan, the Chief Minister headed for a meeting of the High-Powered Purchase Committee here where the proposal for the acquisition of a new limousine for Raj Bhavan was awaiting his approval. If a source is to be believed, the car was meant for use by the wife of the Governor, Ms Sudesh Kumari. Mr Chautala asked the dealers of the car company to give a 10 per cent discount on the price of the car. When the dealers expressed their inability to give so much discount, Mr Chautala said that in that case it would not be possible for the government to purchase the vehicle. There are already five cars at the disposal of Raj Bhavan. Talking to TNS, an official explained that there was nothing unusual about the Chief Minister’s decision to turn down the proposal. “When a Mercedes was to be bought for the Chief Minister’s own use, the proposal was not through in the first meeting because of the dealer’s reluctance to bring down the price. Similarly, Opel cars were to be purchased for the ministers. But the proposal was dropped and Balenos were bought for the ministers since Balenos were cheaper”, the official said. Meanwhile, the Chief Minister, who was expected to attend the annual general meeting of the Saket Council yesterday did not come to Raj Bhavan for taking part in the meeting and left for Bahadurgarh. Mr Chautala’s critics are smelling a rat in the CM’s absence. |
