1000 cr to upgrade power infrastructure Panchkula, February 17 Highly placed sources in the HPU informed TNS that these line losses will be reduced by bifurcation of small feeders , adding new transformers , replacing the undersize conductors and redundant electric meters, besides coming down heavily against power theft in the state. According to figures available from the Haryana State Regulatory Commission, HPU had been able to reduce these losses from 48 per cent to 39 per cent since 1999. It is learnt that as many as 75 new substations will be commissioned by the end of this year; among these 20 will be energized before the month of July. Says the Chairperson and Financial Commissioner, Power, Mrs Meenakshi Anand
Chaudhary, “ Strengthening the power transmission and distribution system will help curb line losses in a big way. While a sum of Rs 300 crore has already been spent on the strengthening of the system, another Rs 700 crore is being spent on different works for upgradation of the transmission and distribution system.” While 36 new substations have been commissioned in different parts of the state during the past three years, the capacity of 162 substations has been augmented. Other than this, HPU is also involved in laying of 705 km of new transmission line in the state.
HPU has also identified over 300 11 KV feeders in the state, which will be bifurcated to reduce overloading and thus bringing down distribution transformer burnout rate to 2 per cent. While 100 of these feeders have already been bifurcated/ trifurcated, the work on the remaining 11 KV feeders is under execution. |

TRIBUNE IMPACT Karnal, February 17 The university will not only meet the higher educational needs of Sirsa district, but the youth from the areas of Bathinda, Faridkot, Kotkapura, Ferozepore district of Punjab and Sriganganagar district of Rajasthan will also benefit. Welcoming the decision, Mr R.S. Chaudhary, Vice-Chancellor of Kurukshetra University, who could be described as a pioneer in starting this move, maintained that the university would fill a void in the field of higher education of the area. Mr Chaudhary, during his three-year tenure as Vice-Chancellor, took pains to develop the Regional Centre of Kurukshetra University with an eye on converting it into a full-fledged university one day. Mr Chaudhary, who belongs to Sirsa, told The Tribune today that over 80 per cent of the youth of Sirsa areas were deprived of higher education. It was so as there was no university in a radius of 100 km on Haryana side and about 200 km on Rajasthan side. Mr Chaudhary has already raised an infrastructure in Sirsa Regional Centre in which a new university could function from the coming academic year. The new opportunities for higher education would open new vistas of employment for the youth of the area and bring more economic prosperity to this area, he added. The Vice-Chancellor welcomed the move of the Haryana Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala. The new university will largely benefit the rural youth as Sirsa district is mostly a rural-dominated area with hardly any city and town nearby. Expressing satisfaction, Mr Chaudhary said his lifelong dream had been fulfilled. Dr Ramji Lal, another educationist and Principal of Dyal Singh College, hailed the decision of the Haryana Government and hoped that the proposed varsity would be developed on modern lines. It should provide latest courses in the field of scientific, technical and communication as well as information technology so that the rural youth could benefit. The proposed university will help the Union Government provide higher education opportunities to over 25 per cent of the youth during the 10th plan period as against 10 per cent now. Mr Udhay Singh, former member of the Haryana Public Service Commission from Sirsa, said a long-neglected need of the people of the area had been met. Mr Padam Jain, president of the Sirsa Municipal Committee, said the new university would prove a boon for the poor. Mr Mehta, Chairman of the Sirsa Improvement Trust, while congratulating the Haryana Government said the proposed university would provide recognition to Sirsa and the
education field in the country. |

HIGH COURT Chandigarh, February 17 Delivering the verdict on a petition filed by Sonepat district resident Baljeet Singh sentenced to seven years rigorous imprisonment after his wife Darshana died following the consumption of insecticide, the Court ruled: “In the case in hand, there was nothing agreed, but the demand of dowry was coming constantly after marriage... and the death had taken place because of the demands.” The Judge concluded: “I do not find any infirmity in the judgement dated July 15, 1988, by the Additional District and Sessions Judge. The appeal is dismissed”.
