Cane farmers withdraw agitation
Yamunanagar, February 22
An agitation of cane growers at here came to an end today when leaders of Sugarcane Sangharsh Samiti withdrew the five-day-old agitation. The cane growers had started a fast in front of Saraswati Sugar Mill gate on February 18. 

Chaitra-Chaudas fair from March 30
Kurukshetra, February 22
The three-day Chaitra-Chaudas fair will be held from March 30 to April 1, 2003, at Saraswati Tirath, Pehowa where devotees perform ceremonies of their forefathers.

Federation’s plan for defaulter societies

Haryana State Cooperative Housing Federation Limited has formulated a scheme of lump sum payment for the cooperative societies which has been declared defaulters due to non-payment of instalments in time.

Development loan notified

The Haryana Government has notified the Haryana state development loan of 10-year tenure. While stating this here today, an official spokesman said that the entire proceeds of the loan would be utilised to finance development-related programmes undertaken by the government.

A staggering 28,000 children have been identified as destitute in Haryana who were being given support at Rs 30 per month per child by the state government. While stating this here today, an official spokesman said that Rs 1 crore was spent annually on these children.

Cane farmers withdraw agitation

An agitation of cane growers at here came to an end today when leaders of Sugarcane Sangharsh Samiti withdrew the five-day-old agitation. The cane growers had started a fast in front of Saraswati Sugar Mill gate on February 18. Two leaders of the samiti, Mr Rattan Singh Deodhar, president and Mr Shamsher Singh Tyagi, general secretary, had sat on an indefinite fast till their demands i.e. the management should provide the same rate as being given by the state government to the co-operative sugar mills in Haryana, were met.

Today afternoon at a kisan sammelan, the state vice-president of the Kissan Sangh, Mr Acharya Devwart, and Mr Varinder Sharma offered a glass of juice to the leaders of Sugarcane Sangharsh Samiti. These leaders announced that within next two-three days a new strategy about the agitation would be formed. The sammelan decided that the farmers should continue to give their sugarcane for the crushing at Saraswati Sugar Mill.

The three private sugar mills of the state are paying the statutory minimum price of Rs 87.54 per quintal of cane to the sugarcane growers as per the direction of Punjab & Haryana High Court.

Mr V.K. Sachdeva, executive director of Saraswati Sugar Mill Yamunanagar, when contacted today said that the farmers had withdrawn the agitation. He said that by now 89 lakh quintal of sugarcane had already been crushed till last night, against a target of 200 lakh which was likely to be achieved by June 2003.

Chaitra-Chaudas fair from March 30

Kurukshetra, February 22
The three-day Chaitra-Chaudas fair will be held from March 30 to April 1, 2003, at Saraswati Tirath, Pehowa where devotees perform ceremonies of their forefathers.

The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Abhilaksh Likhi stated this at a meeting at Pehowa, 27 kms from here.

Mr Likhi said five lakh pilgrims were expected to visit the place during Chaitra-Chaudas fair. He said 80 per cent pilgrims belong to the Sikh community hailing from Sangrur, Patiala, Ropar, Bathinda, Faridkot and Ferozepur districts known as Malwa region of Punjab.

The Deputy Commissioner said 600 policemen and home guards would be on duty and special posts and barriers would be erected. He said besides this 150 volunteers from Mahabir Dal would also assist the police during the fair. He said that a police control room would also be set up besides contingents of the women police would also put on duty.

The Deputy Commissioner said that fresh water be made available for pilgrims in Saraswati tank and temporary toilets would be installed by the Public Health Department. All roads leading to ‘mela’ would be repaird. An information centre would also be set up by the Public Relation Department.

Rs 1.50 crore to beautify Pehowa

A park will be developed near Saraswati Tirath, Pehowa, on 6 acres besides a bhavan having all facilities, will be built for people visiting Pehowa for ceremonies of their forefathers.

The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Abhilaksh Likhi, stated this while reviewing the projects at Pehowa, 27 km from here, sanctioned by Union Minister of Tourism and Culture Jagmohan recently.

The Deputy Commissioner said the proposal for the park had been sent to the Ministry of Tourism and Culture. He said Haryana Chief Minister, Om Prakash Chautala had got sanctioned Rs 1.50 crore from the Union Ministry. He said that an information centre would be set up in the Bhavan for providing information to the pilgrims on Kurukshetra and surrounding places.

Federation’s plan for defaulter societies

Haryana State Cooperative Housing Federation Limited has formulated a scheme of lump sum payment for the cooperative societies which has been declared defaulters due to non-payment of instalments in time.

While stating this here today, a spokesman of the federation said that all those societies which had two or more pending instalments till October 1, 2002, could benefit from the scheme.

He said that accounts of the members would be prepared on the basis of payments made by them to their societies till October 31, 2002. The overdue principal amount and the interest accrued thereon and the penal interest would be waived off from the date on which the lump sum payment would be made.

Besides, if any member made the payment along with 50 per cent of the interest amount, then 75 per cent of the penal interest would be waived off and the balance would have to be paid in four quarterly instalments along with interest. In case the member did not pay these instalments, he would not be eligible for the scheme.

The spokesman said that the scheme would be applicable in those case also in which the members died but their claims had been received through the LIC. The scheme would remain open till March 31.

He said that the societies or members who wanted to take benefit of the scheme could make the payment directly in the name of Haryana State Cooperative Housing Federation Limited, Panchkula, or deposit it in the account of the federation.

Development loan notified

The Haryana Government has notified the Haryana state development loan of 10-year tenure.

While stating this here today, an official spokesman said that the entire proceeds of the loan would be utilised to finance development-related programmes undertaken by the government.

The programmes are expected to ensure quick and uniform economic development, in addition to improving internal resources of the state.

He said that the loan would be sold through the RBI, New Delhi and Mumbai.

The sale would start on February 25, the spokesman said and added that the RBI could close the sale at any time during or after the close of banking hours in case it deemed it fit and necessary to do so in view of the borrowing requirement of the state government and subscriptions already received at that time.

He said that the issue price of the loan would be Rs 1,000 per every Rs 1,000 (nominal) of the loan applied for.

Applications for purchase of the loan should be submitted in prescribed form obtained from the Public Debt Office of the RBI, New Delhi and Mumbai.

He said the loan would bear an interest rate of 6.95 per cent per annum and it would be paid half yearly on August 25 and February 25.

Chautala asks people to pay power bills

Jind, February 22
For the first time in the history of Haryana, the Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) have been involved in recovery of electricity arrears in rural areas running into several hundred crores of rupees.

Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala today asked elected representatives of these institutions to motivate people in paying their electricity outstanding. They, at the same time, assured the defaulters that major amount of money so collected would be pumped into development works of concerned villages, Mr Chautala said while presiding over his third phase of ‘Sarkar aapke dwar’ programme in the Uchana Assembly constituency of this district. Representatives of 49 village panchayats collectively apprised Mr Chautala of the problems confronted by their areas.

Mr Chautala reiterated his government’s commitment of providing quality power in sufficiency quantity to every category of consumers. He said irrigation facilities would be provided all over the state, new water courses constructed and old ones repaired to ensure optimum use of irrigation water. UNI

28,000 destitute children in state

A staggering 28,000 children have been identified as destitute in Haryana who were being given support at Rs 30 per month per child by the state government. While stating this here today, an official spokesman said that Rs 1 crore was spent annually on these children.

The spokesman said that the government had recognised the Haryana State Council for Child Welfare (HSCCW), Chandigarh, SOS Children's Village, Bal Niketan, Panchkula, and Bal Gram, Rai (Sonepat), for in-country adoption of children. The HSCCW had been recognised for inter-country adoption of children also, he said and added that two Shishu Greh had been set up at Yamunanagar and Panchkula where destitute and orphan children up to six years of age were being maintained and rehabilitated through adoption.

A scheme for street children had been implemented in all the districts of the state and NGOs were being given 90 per cent grant-in-aid of the total expenditure incurred on taking care of these children. About Rs 40 lakh was spent annually under this scheme, he said.

State president of the INLD Sher Singh Badshami and Finance Minister Sampat Singh accompanied Mr Chautala.

The Congress government, he alleged, promoted corruption, the HVP government went a step ahead in that direction. He also accused the HVP of promoting liquor smuggling.

Later, addressing mediapersons, Mr Badshami accused the Opposition parties with spreading falsehood regarding casinos. He said that the opposition parties were interested in getting political mileage out of the issue and not concerned about the welfare of the people.

HAU bags trophy at youth fest

The host Haryana Agricultural University (HAU) today bagged the rolling trophy for the overall Championship at the fourth All-India Inter-State Agricultural University Youth Festival —Agriunifest-2002 — which concluded at HAU here.

Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology secured second position. Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University, Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology and the HAU were declared the best universities on the basis of overall score in literary, music and fine arts, theatrical and dance events, respectively.
