Three children among four charred to death in car
Ludhiana, November 10
An Executive Engineer of the Municipal Corporation and three children were charred to death and three others were injured when their car caught fire after ramming into a stray cow near Jalandhar bypass here last night.

Crime on rise but Akalis remain target

While the Ludhiana police is busy in either arresting Akalis or erecting barricades to check their movement, the crime graph is rising putting a question mark on the priorities of the police, efficiency of the PCR squad and general vigil of the police department. The fact that not a single case of recent crime, including, murder, robbery and even dacoity has been solved so far, has further put the district police in a spot.

House burgled in broad daylight 
Ludhiana, November 10
Unidentified burglars broke into the house of a businessman in the Model Town area and decamped with cash, here today. According to Mr Preet Mohan Singh Bindra, owner of house no 512-L, Model Town, the burglars broke into the house when his mother had gone out for an hour in the afternoon.

Encroachments thrive as panel withers
Ludhiana, November 10
Encroachments along the city roads by shopkeepers and others continue to be on the rise particularly because the newly constituted municipal corporation has failed to re-constitute a committee that would submit a detailed report about encroachments in various parts of the city along with measures to eradicate the menace.

Seminar on insurance trends today

The Ludhiana Management Association (LMA) will organise a seminar on “Changing trends in insurance” and “Claims management” on November 11 in which Mr Sandeep Bakshi, Managing Director, ICICI Lombard General Insurance Co. Ltd., Mr R. Rangarajan, an eminent consultant on insurance matters at ICICI Lombard, and Mr Rajiv Thapar, Managing Director, Cunningham Lindsey Ltd, an Indian arm of Cunningham Lindey Worldwide, will address LMA members on various aspects of insurance and settlement of claims.

Traders meet Preneet on exim issue
Ludhiana, November 10
A delegation of the Punjab Pradesh Beopar Mandal led by its president, Mr Amrit Lal Jain, met the Congress MP, Ms Preneet Kaur, in Chandigarh yesterday seeking her intervention for resolving their grievances on sales tax and exim policy. The Minister for Industries, Mr Avtar Henry, was also present.

The Civil Lines branch of the State Bank of India today organised a programme for exchanging mutilated and soiled notes. The bank also distributed coins worth Rs 2 lakh.

The national general secretary of the Bharti Kisan Union, Mr Balbir Singh Rajewal, has expressed resentment with the state government for failing to waive off Rs 250 crore to farmers in Punjab, who are debt ridden. The amount had been given to farmers to buy fertilizers.

CASTLE regional corporate office organised the fifth Punjab State-Level Mathematics Test today at Guru Nanak Public School, Sarabha Nagar, here to identify the Math’s Wizard, Genius, Ace and Experts 2002. The test saw around 900 students of class IX and X from 28 schools of Ludhiana vying for these titles.

Delhi based Deep Blue Productions is starting a new programme “Dil Diyaan Gallan” on DD Punjabi. The-half-an hour programme will be telecast every Monday at 8 pm to starting tomorrow. The programme will be based on personal lives and careers of Punjabi singers.

Ayurvedic Good Manufacturing Practices unit of Pentavox Herbals organised a seminar-cum-workshop on medicinal herbs for visiting delegates of the EISRA, Holland, here yesterday. The company’s ayurvedacharya, Dr Pradeep Nagrath, gave details about various medicinal herbs and ayurvedic processing through slide presentation and practical demonstration.

Medical camp on epilepsy
Ludhiana, November 10
A free medical camp to provide treatment for epilepsy, fits, mental weakness, convulsions and delayed mile stones was organised at a local hospital, Gill Road, here today. A team of neurologists and child specialists examined more than 200 patients of convulsive disorders. Medicines were distributed, free of cost, among the poor patients.

Eight teams for kabaddi league
Ludhiana, November 10
Eight top teams of Punjab have confirmed their participation in the inaugural All-India Alankar Tony Kabaddi League to be organised by the Punjab Rural Sports Promotion Council during the various forthcoming rural sports festival meets. According to Mr Jaswant Singh Grewal, chairman of the council, the first match of the league will be played on November 15.
