England
crash to big defeat
Brisbane, November 10 Mark Butcher scored a defiant 40, more than half his team’s score, but just two others made it to double figures as the tourists recorded their lowest ever total in a Test match at the Gabba. Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath captured four second innings wickets to finish with eight for the game but lost out on the man-of-the-match honours to Matthew Hayden, who scored twin centuries to become just the seventh player to score hundreds in each innings of an Ashes Test.
Damien Martyn and Adam Gilchrist also completed half-centuries in Australia’s second innings, allowing Steve Waugh to declare after lunch with a massive lead of 463.Needing to bat through more than four sessions to force a draw, England could not have made a worse start in their battle for survival when openers Michael Vaughan and Marcus Trescothick were both dismissed in the first two overs. Vaughan went for a duck, trapped leg before wicket by McGrath from the third ball of the innings, and Trescothick was caught for one by wicketkeeper Gilchrist off Jason Gillespie with the total on three. England captain Hussain and Butcher survived to tea but the wickets began tumbling immediately after the re-start including three inside eight balls . Hussain went for 11 with the total on 33, followed by John Crawley and Alec Stewart for ducks. Crawley was run out when Gilchrist threw down the stumps from the opposite end of the pitch while Stewart made a golden duck after a second-ball duck in the first innings. Butcher’s resistance finally ended on 40 when Shane Warne found the edge and the leg spinner then mopped up the final wicket of Andy Caddick as England’s innings ended abruptly in the 29th over. England’s number 11, Welsh paceman Simon Jones, did not bat after rupturing his knee ligaments while fielding on Thursday. victory for S Africa
Johannesburg, November 10 It was their fifth win in six Test matches played between the two countries in South Africa. Makhaya Ntini and South African captain Shaun Pollock prised open the Sri Lankan batting, taking two wickets each in their opening spells as Sri Lanka, trailing by 194 in the first innings, crashed to 25 for four. Ntini went on to finish with three for 22. Steve Elworthy took two wickets and Andrew Hall wrapped up the match by taking three for one, the last wicket falling as rain was falling at the start of a thunderstorm which would have driven the players off the field within minutes. South Africa were earlier bowled out for 386 in their first innings. Sri Lanka made a disastrous start to their second innings when Ntini dismissed Russel Arnold for his second nought of the match in the second over. Arnold was out to the first ball he faced, caught by Jacques Kallis at second slip. Scoreboard Sri Lanka Ist innings: 192 South Africa Ist innings: (overnight 378-7) Smith c Tillakaratne

Bowlers
bring Punjab back in contention Chandigarh, November 10 After the hosts were bundled out for 220 early in the morning the visitors had a chance to force Punjab on the back foot. But the Punjab bowling trio kept their nerves and though Williams struck a superb 104 bowled their rivals out for 191 runs, giving a 29-run first innings lead for the team. Punjab, in their second essay, were 17 without loss as the day’s play ended six overs early due to fading light. Amit Uniyal, who chipped in with crucial 37 runs yesterday, gave the hosts exactly the type of start they wanted, sending back opener Satyajit Parab and former India wicketkeeper Nayan Mongia in the same over when just 11 runs were there on the board. Both were caught behind the stumps by wicketkeeper-batsman Pankaj Dharmani who had an impressive day behind the stumps being responsible for as many four dismissals. When Baroda had yet to get over the loss of these wickets Rajesh, who bowled an impressive spell on his debut match, trapped Rakesh Solanki lbw. Seamer Gagandeep struck twin blows soon thereafter, claiming the key wickets of Tushar Arothe and hard-hitting and former international Atul Badede as half the team was back in the pavilion with not even hundred runs on the board. Williams, however, was a picture of concentration and application. Keeping one end in tact he scored at a fairly fast clip. He played an unblemished knock of 104 runs off 167 deliveries before he fell to left-arm seamer Uniyal having been caught by Dharmani behind the stumps. Without his contribution the visitors’ innings would have been in a complete mess. Ajit Bohite also played a valuable 40-run knock but the efforts were good enough only to take the total in sight of 200-run mark. But the visitors lost last three wickets at the same score of 191 as the team was all out 29 runs short of Punjab’s first innings score.
