BKU leader’s call for dharna
Our Correspondent

Samrala, November 10
The national general secretary of the Bharti Kisan Union, Mr Balbir Singh Rajewal, has expressed resentment with the state government for failing to waive off Rs 250 crore to farmers in Punjab, who are debt ridden. The amount had been given to farmers to buy fertilizers.

To add to the misery of farmers the government had put a burden of more than Rs 1000 crore by imposing sales tax and purchase tax on fertilizer, pesticides, oil cakes, milk etc as also electricity bills for tubewells and water charges for canal water. Mr Rajewal said the BKU had given a memorandum to the Chief Minister in this regard. He said there was rampant corruption in Milkfed involving crores of rupees, and there was documentary evidence to prove this.

This had been marked to the Punjab Vigilance for inquiry. But the Vigilance Department had not done anything in this direction in the past six months. He said the farmers would sit on a dharna on November 12 at Matka Chowk in Chandigarh to protest against this attitude and also demanded an inquiry by the CBI.

Mr Rajewal said the farmers who had saved their paddy crops from severe drought in Punjab had not been paid even a single penny out of Rs 20 as increased paddy price announced by the centre as also Rs 10 per quintal bonus declared by the Punjab Government. About 100 villages of Ropar , Ludhiana and Fatehgarh Sahib districts completely lost their fully matured paddy crop due to hailstorm. The government has done nothing to help those farmers except only making special girdawari, what to speak of compensation for the lost crops.

The government and coop officials are harassing farmers for recovery of agricultural loans, Mr Rajewal alleged. The sugar mills in Punjab have started crushing sugarcane but the sugarcane price which is within the purview of the state government, has not yet been fixed.

HAMARA SCHOOL
GURU NANAK INTERNATIONAL PUBLIC SCHOOL
Stress on all-round development of children

“Educational institutions are temples of learning, with education and knowledge as the Goddess, teachers its pious priests and students its devotees”, so said Jawaharlal Nehru.

What can make a child a happy and successful individual? Of course, the right education of the child. Education is the foundation on which any healthy economy can survive. The wellbeing of any country depends on the reach of education among its population. But it must be remembered that by the term ‘Education’ we should not mean the so-called academic education, which is cheap, artificial and mechanical.

Guru Nanak International Public School (GNIPS) was founded in 1981 and is housed in Gujarkhan Campus, Model Town, Ludhiana. Governed by the educated elite — President Paramjit Singh Sarna, Secretary Gurbit Singh Sarna and Manager Harbhajan Singh — it endeavours to bring out the best in each child, the laying more emphasis on all-round development of the child’s personality.

The school started its journey from a very humble base with a handful of teachers and students. Its objective was to impart quality education to children of Ludhiana, and it has gained strength in all respects. It has blossomed into a premier educational institution of Ludhiana with 2,000 students whose physical, intellectual and spiritual needs are taken care of by a team of around 150 experienced, efficient and well-qualified teachers. The school is affiliated to the CBSE, New Delhi. Over the years, the school is showing 100 per cent results in matriculation examination. Plus1 classes are going to start in 2003. The school endeavours to provide an atmosphere which inspires children to achieve excellence in all walks of life. To initiate better education and good rapport, the students of classes VI to X are placed in four houses — red, blue, green and gold. The students house council has a democratic set-up with elected student nominees. In order to build up confidence, knowledge of art, craft and music, inter-house, inter-class and inter-school competitions are organised. These activities make a very positive contribution towards students’ cultural and aesthetic development.

The students of GNIPS have won laurels in various inter-school shabad gayan and song competitions. Music is not the only field of success, as the school has carved a niche for itself in sports too. Athletes have brought laurels by participating in various district-level, state-level and national-level tournaments. The school is equipped with a skating rink of international standards. The GNIPS band is considered to be the best school band in the city.

The school has spacious and well-ventilated rooms which make the children comfortable. The fully equipped laboratories and the well-maintained library help in assimilation of knowledge. The latest computer education is provided to the students. The lush green lawns add to the beauty of the school.

Due to the busy schedule and social commitments of the parents, it becomes difficult for them to look after their children in the manner they would like to. Hence, day boarding has been provided. This system of education has really proved very useful as after school, children may go into the hands of untrained tutors. To elaborate the daily schedule, the children stay back after morning school for day boarding.

The school also lays emphasis on internal as well as external competitions which is necessary for grooming up their overall personality and inculcating in them the feeling of patriotism, national integration and brotherhood. Exhibitions, quiz competitions and mental ability tests are organised from time to time.

‘Education should provide stimulating social milieu’

Balwinder GulatiMs Balwinder Gulati started teaching in Guru Nanak International Public School, then moved on to become senior supervisor, officiating Principal, and finally Principal. She has been at the helm of the school for the past four years. As she climbed the ladder, she became deeply involved in the affairs of the school and put in her heart and soul to bring it to the level of the prestigious schools of the city. She says that classroom teaching and discipline has improved as she takes all teachers into confidence and they assist her very ably in maintaining discipline.

  • On religion

I place a great deal of faith in God .We try to impart the secular nature of religion by celebrating all religious functions with zeal. 8On education

Education has always played a pivotal and vital role in nation-building and therefore, it should aim at providing a social milieu within which the students can grow intellectually through the understanding of relevant knowledge. It should provide training for life. Unfortunately, the syllabi drafted by the CBSE puts great stress on the students. Creativity is sadly lacking. Social studies is the bete noire of the students. Since our institution is day boarding, 90 per cent students solve their difficulties in mathematics in school during special classes held for them in the afternoon. This discourages tuitions too. The teacher-taught ratio of 35 students per teacher makes teaching more effective and creates better understanding environment in the classrooms. We have a separate section that conducts examinations.

  • On discipline

Discipline is essential to observe laws and rules of the school. Discipline is mental and physical training to have control over oneself, not by others. The school endeavours towards this aim. Perfect discipline is maintained as there is a pre-primary, primary and middle school headmistresses to take care of discipline. Moreover, there is a supervisor of day boarding. Since the jobs are clear-cut, hardly any indiscipline problems arise. The students are not allowed to go out without a class pass. Only two passes are issued, one for a boys and the other for girls. Sports teachers along with house in charges see that children leave the classes in a very disciplined manner. The teachers’ disciplined attitude has a good impact. — AA

Poems by students

Friendship

Some friends make you fly in the sky like kites

some friends tell you what is wrong or what is right

some friends cut us like a knife

but some friends make us the flowers of a garden

Kamal Kiran, class VII-B

Believe it or not

One bright day in the middle of the night,

two dead bodies got up to fight

Back to back they faced each other,

They drew their pistols and shot each other

A dead policeman heard the noise

he came and shot the two dead boys

If you do not believe this lie is true

ask the blind man, he saw it too

Manjot Kaur, class VIII-D

Exams & I

Oh! My dear examination

I have made no preparation

I am terribly afraid of you

Kindly tell me what to do

you are early I am late

I am daily losing weight

Oh! go away, go away you must let me learn

my lesson first

Go where you like but leave my room

Otherwise, I shall use my broom

You have disturbed my sound sleep

you are sure to make me weep

my body has become a skeleton

I do not know the laws of Newton

Anabpreet Singh

Drugs & future

A young boy with age of eighteen

thinks about his past in garden green

He was a tiny boy with great wishes

fond of study, sports & tasty dishes

Always stood first and became all rounder

Everyone said he will be big founder

then college days came with future hopes

He wanted to get popularity and go on top

New friends who took drugs in their diet

Drugs attracted him also day and night

He was fully bound by these toxic things

felt that he was with dream wings

Now he is unable and helpless creature

shouts loudly my future, my future

Arshpreet Kaur, class X

Life

Life smiles at the one

who takes it seriously

and doesn’t think it to be just fun

Life can be the best

If we realise

when to work and when to rest

Life should be a sincere style

should work enthusiastically &

let not our work pile

Life is a success if we make

our parents proud

it’s their sweat, that

makes us stand out in any crowd
