Renovated Shaheed Sthal a tourist attraction
Mussoorie, October 7 The tourists, visiting Mussoorie are fascinated to see the structure of the Saheed Sthal that resembles the village houses of the hill state and are also showing their curiosity about the history of the agitation that led to formation of the Uttarakhand state. Six persons were martyred here during the September 2, 1994, police firing and following that the spark of separate state was ignited to such an extent that it was doused only after the people of the state were able to create Uttarakhand. Since then the Saheed Sthal turned into the most revered site in the town and the anniversary functions were also held here periodically. However, the site where Shaheed Sthal existed previously was in shabby condition hurting the entiments of the statehood agitationists and families of the martyrs who demanded repair and renovation of the site. The government heeding to the pleas demolished the old structure and constructed a new one that was in accordance with the heritage and culture of the hill state. A house resembling the hilly village was constructed by the Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA) of the hill state along with the statues of the martyrs installed as a reminder of the sacrifice gone in the formation of the separate state. The renovated Shaheed Sthal was opened for the public on September 2 this year by Chief Minister Harish Rawat and since then the place has become a major tourist attraction with every second tourist coming to the town making it a point to visit Saheed Sthal, said Municipal Council president Manmohan Singh Mall. Rajiv Singh, a tourist from Delhi, said he was unaware about the struggle that had gone in formation of the Uttarakhand but was enlightened after he visited the Saheed Sthal that was really a different experience for him. The photographer community of the town is also delighted with the renovated Shaheed Sthal coming into being and said that their income had increased as the tourist were keen on getting their picture clicked in traditional attire in front of the Shaheed Sthal. However, the credit taking game for the renovation of the Shaheed Sthal has also begun with both, Mussoorie Municipal council President, BJP MLA Mussoorie Ganesh Joshi, staking claims of initiating and pursuing the project without any delay. Govt may allot land to Coca Cola in Sitarganj
Dehradun, October 7 Officials in State Infrastructure and Industrial Development Corporation of Uttarakhand Limited (SIDCUL) said Coca Cola had asked the government to look for 60 acres at another suitable place after the project earlier proposed at Chharba village in Vikasnagar, a few kilometres from Dehradun, failed to take off due to resistance from local people on environment concerns. “The talks have reached a crucial stage and water requirement and other issues of the company are being worked out. We have plenty of land at the Sitarganj industrial estate but water can only be provided through local rivers,” said R Rajesh Kumar, MD, SIDCUL. Senior government officials said the government was keen to see the project through so that other companies too take a cue and start investment in SIDCUL. “The govt is keen to give a right message to MNCs about its keenness to provide a conducive environment for investment. It will like the Chharba episode to fade away,” said an official in the Department of Industries. Coca Cola had planned to invest over Rs 600 crore in the bottling plant at Chharba village but the government was now working afresh on the project. The Nainital HC had directed the state government to return 25 acres at Chharba village allotted to the company to the local gram panchayat.

UKD wants Gairsain as permanent capital
Haridwar, October 7 The Uttarakhand Kranti Dal-Progressive, citing the 14 years of state formation and numerous commissions set up for selecting capital city for Uttarakhand, has mooted for declaration of Gairsain, situated in Chamoli district and in the midst of both Garhwal and Kumaon divisions, as the sole capital of Uttarakhand. A meeting was held at Ranipur camp office by UKD-P activists here today, where they termed Gairsain as the original capital envisaged by statehood agitators and even by eminent freedom fighter Veer Chandra Singh Garhwali. They lamented that evn after a decade and a half of the state formation, barring UKD no party had raised the issue of Gairsain with authority and clarity. UKD (P) youth wing city president Lalit Mamgain said the Congress government led by Vijay Bahuguna earlier and now current Chief Minister Harish Rawat had taken steps to build a state Assembly in Gairsain. Mamgain doubted theCongress intentions over Gairsain, as besides work on an Assembly building at Bharadisain, another building was being built at Raipur in Dehradun. Uday Ram Semwal, central secretary Labour cell of UKD, said that Dehradun was labelled as interim capital during formation of Uttaranchal as the 28th state of India on November 9, 2000. So it should remain the interim capital and making of a separate state Assembly building there will hamper the sentiments of people of hill state, who want only Gairsain as capital of hilly Uttarakhand. UKD leaders also questioned the Congress and BJP governments led by Bhagat Singh Koshyari, N.D Tiwari, B.C Khanduri, Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, Vijay Bahuguna and now Harish Rawat for failing to usher in equal development in all districts of the state. |

For the past three days, heaps of garbage in the Ganga canal and Ganga ghats of Brahma Kund, Har-ki-Pauri, Malviya Deep ghat, Birla ghat, Alaknanda ghat, Kusawrat ghat, Gau ghat, Irish ghat, Rishikul ghat, Lav Kush ghat, Ram Sita ghat, Gobind ghat, Prem Nagar Ashram ghat, Pull Jatwada and several other ghats are being cleared on a daily basis. Brahma Swarup Brahamchari of Jai Ram ashram terms this Ganga closure as a boon as cleaning of the canal and adjacent Ganga ghats on it can be done effectively. Social activist JP Baduni said after a long time one was witnessing mass and voluntary participation by local residents. Even the Muslim community in suburban Jwalapur is contributeing to the cleaning drive. Former municipal chairperson Satpal Brahmachari points out that now annual Ganga canal closure can be utilised for Ganga cleaning and mass participation of people has shown that “we can do it on our own too”. Teerth Purohit Anshul Shrikunj says the sanctity and purity of the Ganga “is in our hands and by cleaning it as well as not putting in garbage, plastic, polythene bags, washing clothes, putting religious ritual material and other industrial pollutants in the holy river Ganga will make it cleaner”. Industrial associations, ward councillors, women, traders, schools, colleges and several social forums are also getting involved in this cleanliness drive. Mayor Manoj Garg is urging people and organisations to utilise this fortnight-long Gagna canal closure tenure to clean the Ganga canal ghats. |

Chain-snatching incidents on the rise in Haridwar
Haridwar, October 7 Model colony resident Suman Lal who was returning from a kitty party yesterday night near Ranipur turning, was targeted by bike-borne chain snatchers, who snatched a gold chain from her
neck. Similarly,on October 3 at NH-58 near Jahanvi Dale hotel, a purse of a women was snatched while the very next day a gold chain was looted from a woman resident when she was just standing outside her house at Khanna
Nagar. Even the appointment of new woman SSP Sweety Aggarwal seems to be having no impact on the crime rate in the city. Broad daylight chain snatching incidents, that too in congested, busy market areas, have raised questions on the so-called effective policing being touted by district police officials every now and then. In fact Ranipur-Chandracharya square is the busiest commercial hub of the city, with at least four to six police personnel on duty at this square. Chain snatching of Ms Suman yesterday night was a daring incident, as the police checkpost was just 40-60 metres away from the crime spot, while the CCTV installed at the Chandracharya square could not cover this crime clearly. This meant that the CCTV footage on which the police usually rely to identify the criminals went in vain and the police are still wandering in the dark to nab the culprits. Furthermore, a gang of chain snatchers has also come to light who say namaste to women wearing chains and rings and then pull off these items ,with a biker standing at some distance. The snatcher then runs towards the biker and both flee away in multiple lanes of
Khanna, Nagar, Aawas Vikas colony, Subash Nagar, BHEL and Shivalik Nagar in
Ranipur. On these day-to-day chain snatching incidents, SSP Sweety Aggarwal told TNS that the police were taking seriously the rise in crime incidents in the city and all the police officials have been directed to take necessary steps to curb such
incidents. Sweety added that field patrolling has been increased and more number of CCTVs are being installed, while those which are defunct are being repaired. Circle officer, city, Chandra Mohan Singh said that all police station officers have been directed to remain in touch with the local people and CPU personnel have been specially briefed on nabbing chain snatchers. Former state women’s commission chairperson Dr Santosh Chauhan has expressed concern over the rising crime against women in the city. Dr Chauhan pointed that laxity by city police personnel has paved the way for rise in criminal activities, which has instilled fear among residents, particularly among womenfolk, in venturing out of their homes alone. |

Haridwar, October 7 Haridwar-born Vandana rose to fame after she emerged the third highest goal scorer in the World Cup held in Germany last year . She scored in all five matches that India played in the Asian Games in South Korea. Talking to The Tribune after returning from South Korea, Vandana said she was overwhelmed by the big welcome she got at various cities she covered during her train journey from Amritsar to Haridwar. “I scored in the dying minutes of the bronze medal decider match against Japan. Getting a medal for India has been my dream since childhood, when I took to hockey as career,” said Vandana, while she was being garlanded by numerous fans, well wishers at her village in Roshanabad. Amid sloganeering, a large number of people including her family members, relatives, friends, villagers and prominent people of the district welcomed Vandana on her arrival in Haridwar. Vandana Kataria, who plays mostly as forward, attributes her success to hard work, guidance of her coach Krishan Kumar and the camaraderie between the team members. In fact she revealed that all her team members wanted to replicate the Bollywood movie ‘Chak De’ movie success story. Though they fell short of it, which Vandana put onus on six missed chances by some team players. Currently working with the Indian Railways, Vandana said with maiden medal by any junior eves’ hockey team at the World Cup in Germany last year and now Asian Games medal, the women hockey was on the revival path and now getting popular. She said under the captaincy of Ritu Rani, the girls showed grit, determination, hard work, team spirit and replicated the strategies drawn on board to make sure they get it to the semi finals. Father Nahar Singh is all praise for the talent, efforts and confidence of her daughter, who revealed that initially villagers had objected to Vandana’s playing outdoor game like hockey. “But now all are happy, in fact the very people who used to oppose girls involvement in sports are now motivating them. Vandana has shown that girls are no way less than boys and now many a girls in the village idolize her,” said Nahar Singh.
