Narendra Negi weaves a spell of melody
Haridwar, September 28 The venue, Rishikul ground, was jampacked, with a large number waiting outside. A slightly cold breeze blowing gave the feeling of the approaching winter. This, coupled with the melodious voice of the legendary singer, initially took the audience on a spiritual journey and later enthralled it with diverse theme songs. It was a night that not only locals but also those hailing from other states will relish for a long time. As is the norm, Negi’s albums are super-hit chartbusters; his stage show was also a smashing hit. Folk, classical, spiritual, religious songs and those with fast-paced beats catering to the younger audience reverberated throughout the venue. ‘Negi Da’ – as the folk singer is popularly called, was urged by the audience a number of times to repeat or sing songs of their choice. Negi won many hearts with his memorable and heart-touching performance. Negi paid obeisance to deity Durga and paid tribute to the Ganga, singing “Chala Nau Ratro Ki Bela”, “Ganga Mai Har Har Ganga” and “Tera Mandir Ma Diyu Balyu Mera Man Bhi Ujala Dye”. He stirred people’s emotions by singing “Tehri Dubdu” based on the plight of people of old Tehri town, who left their homes to pave way for Tehri Dam. Negi churned out his super-hit album title track “Dui gati baisakh...surma myar mulka ai jayi”. “Mujhko Pahadi Pahadi Mat Bolo mey Dehradun Vala hun” had members of the audience, cutting across age groups, on their feet. Co-singers Kavilash Negi, Manju Sundriyal, Poonam Sati and Usha Negi too rendered melodious and popular Garhwali-Kumaoni numbers. Speaking on the sidelines, Negi said, “It’s an honour to perform in Haridwar — The city is known for its spiritual, cultural and religious history. Through my songs, I want to convey the history, joy, plight and misery of the people of Uttarakhand. This is a land of deities and my albums also feature a song on religious aspects,” said Negi, who hails from Pauri Garhwal. The musical troupe aiding the singer comprised Anil Bisht, Ganesh Kukshal and Deepa Pant.

Madkot farmers resent road closure
Pithoragarh, September 28 They said the situation would cause financial losses to thousands of farmers of villages of the area, who have been depending on production and marketing of
these high Himalayan crops over the last several decades. “We have decided to intensify our protest after October 3 if the administration does not open the road till then. We could also resort to closure of Madkot town while
the agitation is on for a route to market our produce,” said Bhagat Singh Pradhan of Tomik village of Madkot area, which is known for its potato quality. The villagers have said that the 22-km-long road from Madkot to Bona was operational only up to 16 km from Madkot market till three months back. It has been completely closed today, making
it difficult for thousands of potato-growing villagers to take their produce to Madkot and Sereaghat markets,
from where the traders take this produce to bigger markets of Pithoragarh and Haldwani. “If we are compelled to take our produce on backs of mules or sheep, it would be uneconomical for the farmers. Plying of vehicles will make things profitable through the sale of our farm produce,” said Devendra Singh Gram Pradhan of Nirtoli village Of Bona area. Potato and rajmah-growing farmers have said that as the source of livelihood of all farmers of the area is crop of rajmah and potato besides apple orchards, this can be translated into livelihood of families if the crops get market at the time of ripening. “If we do not get market for these highly commercial crops in time, our potato and rajmah crops get damaged in the field or at the stores, making the farmer suffer for the entire year,” said Bhagat Singh. Besides villagers from Bona, villagers from other potato-producing villages of Tomik, Valthi Gaila, Rapti and Nirtoli participated in the demonstration. They threatened the administration that
if the said road is not opened by October 1, they would stage a massive demonstration on October 3 this year.

Jumbos drawn to sugarcane fields
Haridwar, September 28 Elephants have ventured into more than 50 bighas of fields in the Sultanpur area in the past few days. Elephants have also reached nearby areas of Sultanpur like Bhogpur Tanda, Tanda Bhagmal, Rampur, Baditeep, Tilakpuri and Rai Ghati in the past 10 days. With the monsoon season ending, the elephant movement from the Lansdowne-Kotdwara forest division in Pauri Garhwal district towards the Haridwar forest division and the Chilla range of Rajaji National Park has also begun. There is a mass movement of jumbos on the outskirts of Haridwar city as well as inner pockets of villages like Jagjeetpur, Chandanhedi, Ajeetpur, Missirpur, Katarpur on the Haridwar-Lakshar road. On the Shyampur-Najibabad-Kotdwara road, incidents of elephants coming on to the road are on the rise. People living on the foothills of the Shivalik hills and in the vicinity of Tibdi, Haridwar and Chilla forest range are reporting sighting of elephants almost every day. Steps are being taken to avoid human-animal conflicts, but at the same time it is to be ensured that the movement of jumbos on several elephant corridors doesn’t get affected. The pasting of medicinal lotion on the trees that have been uprooted by the wild tusker is being undertaken. Apart from this, sampling of the secretion of the pachyderm is also being taken by scientists to better know the changes in the behaviour of the species. Footprints of the jumbos are being taken into account to understand their main corridor and whereabouts. Wildlife Warden SB Sharma said information on the activities of elephants are monitored on a regular basis. He pointed out that human interference in traditional zones of elephants and residential colonies coming up near the forests are two prime reasons for jumbos venturing into residential areas. Villagers Braham Pal Singh and Rajveer Singh of Sultanpur have sought ‘compensation’ from the state government for sugarcane and wheat crop eaten by jumbos. Divisional forest officials said the department had alerted its employees and had urged locals to inform the forest employees as soon as they see or suspect elephant movement in the area. |

POLITICAL DIARY
Dehradun, September 28 During his visit to Dehradun, Bahuguna also met Chief Minister Harish Rawat and reportedly asked him to give representation to at least three of his loyalist Congress legislators, namely Subodh Uniyal, Shailendra Mohan Singhal and Rajinder Bhandari, in the state Cabinet. He insisted that three ministers of the Progressive Democratic Front (PDF) supporting the state government be dropped from the ministry and Congress legislators be adjusted in their place. Harish Rawat had already rejected the demand and publicly announced that there was no move for a Cabinet reshuffle or dropping PDF ministers. In a 70-member Uttarakhand Assembly, the Congress has 33 legislators while the Opposition BJP has 30 members in the House. The seven-member conglomerate of Progressive Democratic Front (PDF) comprising three Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) members, three Independents and a lone Uttarakhand Kranti Dal (UKD) legislator is supporting the state Congress government. Five of these seven are ministers in the Rawat ministry. At a time when the state Congress government is receiving flak from its own legislators, namely Shaila Rani Rawat from Kedarnath, senior minister Harak Singh Rawat and Pithoragarh legislator Mayukh Mahar, the Chief Minister is in no mood to oblige his detractors within the Congress and destroy his bonhomie with the PDF group. According to Congress observers, former Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna is driven to raise such demands for Cabinet berths for those in his camp followers or he would lose control over his remaining supporters in the state politics in the wake of Chief Minister Harish Rawat trying hard to please Bahuguna supporters and win them over. The Congress leaders believe that Bahuguna is interested in getting a Rajya Sabha berth and has been trying hard. However, with many senior central Congress leaders “jobless” after the Lok Sabha debacle, it was felt that a Central party leader would be nominated as the party’s Rajya Sabha nominee from the state in November this year. It is highly unlikely that Rawat would oblige the Bahuguna camp either in making room in the state ministry or in the state party hierarchy which would be re-cast soon by the new state Congress president Kishore Upadhyay, a protégé of Harish
Rawat.

Two suspects arrested for Nakronda robbery
Dehradun, September 28 Top state police officers heaved a sigh of relief after police teams, which had been working round the clock, managed to arrest one of the suspects, Nadeem, from Bhagwanpur in Haridwar district this morning. Besides, the Bijnor police on information from the Uttarkhand police had arrested another suspect, Shahzad, who is now in the custody of the Dehradun police, said DGP BS Sidhu while addressing mediapersons here today. Sidhu said, “After studying the workings of all suspected gangs like Sapare, Bagadiye, Bawariya, Paradi and Bangladeshi, the police teams got information from the Bijnor police about Shahzad and his other gang members who use a modus operandi similar to the one adopted in the Nakronda robbery case.” The police teams working on the case found out that Akhlaq, who lives in a rented accommodation at Doiwala and supplies construction material, had planned a robbery with his brother-in-law Sajid Pehalwan, who lives in Saharanpur, said the DGP. I am sure that they will be arrested soon,” said Sidhu. “The Chief Minister has announced a reward of Rs 1 lakh for the police teams for solving the robbery case while the Police Department has announced a reward of Rs 20,000,” he further added.

They pointed a gun at the Thapliyal family members and started beating them. Surendra’s son Ankit resisted the robbers, one of whom shot him dead from a double-barrel gun. *
The incident triggered widespread protests by local villagers, who even blocked the Dehradun-Haridwar National Highway twice in the last 15 days. Rural sport ‘Ghus Ghusi’ looks for revival in state
Dehradun, September 28 An amazing game played by schoolchildren in hills is similar to skiing and is played on hilly slopes. Children use a board which is nothing but a piece of plank, which could either be a bare wood or two writing slates joined together. This plank is used to slide on slopes. While delivering his address at the Tourism Day celebrations in Dehradun yesterday, CM Harish Rawat remembered playing “Ghus Ghusi” during his school days in the Kumaon region. “Ghus Ghusi” is still a popular sport in Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, albeit in new form. Children in Nagali village of Tehri district have been using dry pine needles to enhance sliding potential of the board. Boys take a small plank-shaped wood and slide it over dry pine needles covered slopes. These dry pine needles are found in abundance in hill slopes.
