Vice-President Hamid Ansari and Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan were also seen sharing the stage at Subhash Maidan.

The Prime Minister was seen chatting with his predecessor Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi, before the arrival of Ansari and then the President.

Addressing the gathering, the President said the day of Dasehra symbolises the victory of good over evil. "It inspires us to face difficulties," he said in his brief address.

Mystery shrouds woman’s death in Kailash Nagar

New Delhi, October 3
Rashi Jain (34) died of a gunshot under mysterious circumstances at her residence in east Delhi's Kailash Nagar area here yesterday evening.
Her husband, a cloth merchant, claimed that she committed suicide after they had a heated argument while the woman's family alleged that she was murdered.

The police said that woman's husband informed them that on the day of the incident, the couple had a heated argument over a trivial matter as a result of which Rashi went to the bedroom, locked herself in and shot herself in the forehead with a licensed revolver.

On hearing the gunshot, he broke open the door and found his wife lying on bed with the bullet pierced through her forehead, the man told the police.

His son was also present at home at the time of the incident. They rushed Rashi to the Lok Nayak Hospital where doctors declared her brought dead, the police said.

The police said that they have seized the weapon. The forensic and ballistic teams were called in to examine the spot.

"A three-member panel of doctors will be conducting the post-mortem to ascertain the cause of death", said a police official who is investigating the case.

Centre, LG saving officers in CNG scam: AAP

New Delhi, October 3
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) today slammed the BJP-led Centre and Delhi Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung accusing them of protecting top bureaucrats, including Delhi Chief Secretary indicted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the Rs 100-crore 2002 CNG fitness scam.

"The Central government and the Delhi administration must reveal whether the CBI has recommended strict action and imposition of penalty on the city's top bureaucrats, including the Delhi Chief Secretary, in the scam by awarding a contract in violation of rules to a private firm for conducting fitness tests of commercial vehicles," an AAP statement said.

According to the party, the silence of the Central government and the LG on the reported indictment gives rise to reasonable apprehensions that "people of Delhi are being cheated by an unaccountable administration and taxpayers' money is being looted".

While the Congress will no doubt remain silent on the scam which took place in its tenure and allegedly involves its former Chief Minister and other members of her Cabinet, but the BJP's silence is mysterious, it said.

Questioning the LG's move to close the probe, the AAP said the LG gave a clean chit to officers against whom the Delhi ACB had registered an FIR in 2012 and in doing this he ignored the ACB opinion that a case under the Prevention of Corruption was made out against these officers. He asked whether or not the LG send any report to the Union Home Ministry on the status of the case against the officers named in the FIR.

Three held for shooting at cops

New Delhi, October 3
The Delhi police today claimed to have arrested three suspects who were allegedly involved in shooting at two constables and robbing their pistols and wireless sets.
The accused were identified as Mohammad Ali, Sultan and Nasir Khan. Two pistols, nine live cartridges and a motorcycle used in commission of crime were seized from their possession, said a police officer.

On October 1, Delhi Police constable Sona Ram and constable of Delhi Home Guard were patrolling about 2 am. They saw three motorcycle-borne youths who were riding without helmet and the number plate of their vehicle was also not legible. The constables asked them to stop. Instead of stopping they tried to speed away their motorcycle. The constables chased them and overpowered them. When the accused saw that there was no chance of running away, they fired at the constables. Ramesh sustained gunshots injury in his back and Ram in his limbs. The accused also managed to rob the pistol and wireless set of Ram.

Sensing the commotion, a civilian came from front with his water tanker. He helped constable to catch Ali on the spot but the remaining two assailants managed to flee. Later, Sultan and Khan were also arrested.

The act of both the constables is of extreme bravery, courage beyond call of their duty and which was done at grave risk to their lives. The Delhi police also commend the laudable effort of the civilian, said DCP Suman Goyal. — TNS
