Xi's movement causes jams
New Delhi, September 18 He had visited the Rashtrapati Bhavan, Rajghat and Hyderabad House, leading to the authorities blocking roads to these locations. Traffic jams mainly happened on roads in the New Delhi area. "Traffic is diverted about a couple of minutes before the VIP movement, due to security concerns. The diversion depends on the movement of the VIP," said a police officer. When the Chinese President visited the Rashtrapati Bhawan for a ceremonial welcome, the general traffic was diverted from Sardar Patel Marg to Shantipath and from Teen Murti to Shantipath, according to the officer. When he visited Rajghat, traffic was diverted from Zakir Hussain Marg and Mathura Road. Similarly, when he visited Hyderabad House, traffic was diverted from roads leading to the venue. "Due to the diversions, there was a heavy traffic at C-Hexagon, Tilak Marg, Akbar Road, Sardar Patel Marg and Dhaula Kuan. Following the diversions here, there was also a slow movement of traffic on Ridge Road," said the officer. The Delhi Traffic Police had issued an advisory on Wednesday, saying that to facilitate the movement of the VIP cavalcade, Sardar Patel Marg will be closed for intermittent periods. They also said that general traffic is likely to be affected on Sardar Patel Marg, Dhaula Kuan and Ashoka Road. In the advisory, the traffic police had also suggested the motorists to make maximum use of the public transport such as the Delhi Metro. Despite the heavy security, more than a dozen Tibetan nationals were detained when they held a protest outside Hyderabad House in central Delhi towards the end of the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Chinese President. The activists, mainly women, arrived in autorickshaws and managed to reach the gate number three of Hyderabad House. Senior police officers tried to bring the situation under control, but eventually had to order the detention of the activists when they tried to enter the venue. The activists were then dragged into DTC buses and PCR vans and taken to a local police station at about 11.45 am. The activists were wearing 'Free Tibet' T-shirts and carried Tibetan national flags as they shouted slogans against Jinping. At about 10 am, four Tibetan activists also unfurled two banners on an electric power pole and a Metro construction pillar near the Taj Palace Hotel in south Delhi's Chanakyapuri, where Jinping is staying. The banners read "Xi: Free Tibet Now". The activists were detained. |
Tihar official, son held for setting daughter-in-law afire
New Delhi, September 18 The 25-year-old woman, Usha Singh, is admitted in a serious condition and with 65 per cent burns at the Safdarjung Hospital in south Delhi. Gyan Singh (50) was in charge of the Central Public Relations Office until the police arrested him and his son, Nitin, today. Nitin works for a private firm in Faridabad. Gyan and Nitin have been booked on charges of attempting to murder Usha and for harassing her for dowry. They have been lodged at jail number four in Tihar. The victim's mother-in-law is also being probed, but she has not been arrested as she suffers from paralysis. Usha has accused her mother-in-law of abusing her. Yesterday about 4 pm, one of the family's neighbours called the police and informed about the incident. "The neighbours had heard the victim's screaming for help and poured water over her to douse the flames," said a police officer. Since Usha and Nitin were married for three years, her statement was recorded at the hospital by a Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM). "She told the SDM that her in-laws had been harassing her for dowry since she married Nitin. Yesterday, there was an argument between Usha and her father-in law. Gyan had been directing her to bring money from her maternal home and when she said she could not, he and his son beat her up," said the officer. Gyan then allegedly slit her wrist with a blade. "The victim said Gyan then brought kerosene, poured it on her and set her ablaze. Her neighbours barged into the house on hearing her screams," the officer said. The neighbours caught Gyan and Nitin and handed over them to the police. Usha was rushed to Safdarjung Hospital. |
Experts brainstorm steps to empower senior citizens
New Delhi, September 18 The symposium that was attended by the stakeholders from appellate and maintenance tribunals, officials from Delhi Police, members of State Council of Senior Citizens and government officials was aimed at discussing the different aspects of providing security to senior citizens and also to sensitize people on adopting a more generous approach towards their needs. "We should not try to separate them from society by building a 'senior citizen' category eligible for certain benefits. Such attempts by the government machinery have generated more fear in them rather than empowering them. They do not need sympathy but empathy," said Anand Prakash, professor of psychology and Dean of Social Sciences and Humanities in Delhi University. The professor urged the government to use the bank of wisdom and knowledge for giving senior citizens a future. "It is always about their past. We have to think of their future which can become their driving force," said the professor. Expressing concern over the plight of the old age persons, former bureaucrat Dr Bhure Lal said it is a matter of great concern that it is the family members who ill-treat the elderly and keep distance from them. This kind of behaviour becomes a security threat to them. "It is seen that the perspective of society towards elderly persons has changed. When a person keeps his aged in-laws with him, people poke fun at him. It is the need of the hour to change the perspective of society towards elderly persons," he said. "We should ensure their security and health and give them respect as they are a storehouse of knowledge and treasure of experiences," he said. Giving suggestions to ensure their safety, Lal said it can be done by way of fixing call bells, door emergency system, servants' verification through the police. |

The police have not made any arrest as yet. Vinita lives with her husband, son and daughter-in-law at G-Block in Kalkaji. The robbery took place about 2 pm. "After everyone left, I went to my room to sleep. When I woke up a few hours later, I saw four men standing at each corner of my bed. I got scared and shouted for my domestic help, Bhagwan Das, but he did not reply. One of the men asked me where the cash and jewellery were kept. When I refused to tell him, one of them punched me," Vinita said. The robbers then allegedly forced her to give her gold bangles. They bound her hands and legs and taped her mouth. They then went to her son Rahul's room. There they opened a cupboard to take out the cash and jewellery from inside an in-built locker.
