DU admissions begin, high cutoffs make students wait
New Delhi, July 1 The first cutoff list was declared on Monday with cutoffs going as high as 100 per cent. "I have scored 94 per cent and I want to pursue history. But I couldn't qualify for the first cutoff, so I have to wait," said Ravi Chandra, a student from Manipur. The high cutoff has forced Mohan Yadav from Madhya Pradesh to wait for some more time. "I have scored 93.66 per cent and wanted admission in B.Com Honours in Ramjas College. But the cutoffs are very high and I have to wait for the second list," Yadav said. The university has notified that it would release eight cutoff lists this year. The admission was already delayed due to a tussle between the university and the University Grants Commission over the controversial four-year undergraduate programme, which was ultimately rolled back. "We had great problems as the admission dates were postponed. My daughter has applied for B.Sc Honours... but the first cutoffs are really high, we are hoping that in the second cutoff, she will qualify," said Sharmila Mukherjee from Assam. "We are not from here, and have come from Assam. Now after so much wait, we will have to wait further," Megharupa Sharma said. Kiran Sati termed the delay in admission "mental harassment". "I have applied for political science. Late admissions are mentally harassing. Though I am from Delhi, my cousins faced a lot of problems," said Sati, an aspirant at ARSD College. In the first cutoff list, three colleges in the university's south campus have set their minimum required marks as high as 100 per cent for honours degree in computer science. Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College (ARSD), Acharya Narendra Dev College and Shyama Prasad Mukherjee College have set 100 per cent as the cutoff for computer science Honours for students belonging to non-science background. Some students said they were ready to wait till they get the college of their choice. "I want to pursue B.Com Honours from Hindu College only. So, I will wait till I qualify for Hindu," said Ashwani Sherawat, who has scored 96.25 per cent in his board examinations. Anauksha Singh, who has qualified for Sri Venkateswara College, said she was ready to wait to get through in Hindu College. "I had applied for English Honours in Venkateshwara and Hindu College. I wanted Hindu College but as its first cutoff is high, I will wait for the second list," Singh said. The rollback of the four-year programme did not affect the cutoff, as it increased by 1.5-2 per cent compared to last year. Followed by computer science, cutoffs for the commerce stream stood as high as 99.75 per cent.—IANS |
Services hit on Dwarka-Noida line
New Delhi, July 1 The problem was rectified after one and a half hours. A fault occurred in the overhead electrical (OHE) wires at 10.20 am, and was rectified at 11.55 am, according to a Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) official. The fault in the OHE was located between Moti Nagar and Ramesh Nagar Metro stations, a Delhi Metro statement said. "Train services were affected between Kirti Nagar and Subhash Nagar stations," it said. Trains ran in two loops from Subhash Nagar to Dwarka and Kirti Nagar to Noida/Vaishali. Though the DMRC clarified that 'all other lines were unaffected' over the incident, train services continued to be slow with train halts of around 20 minutes at each station, which Metro officials attributed to 'some bunching effect'. |
Airport Metro ridership up
by 28 per cent
New Delhi, July 1 "In the last one year, a series of measures has been taken to popularize the Airport Express line. As a result, the average daily ridership on the Airport Express line increased by 28 per cent to 12,856 in June 2014 from 10,069 in July 2013," said a DMRC spokesperson. Ashok Gajapathi Raju, Union Minister of Civil Aviation, today travelled by the Airport Express Metro line and interacted with the passengers using the line. He asked the airport authorities to explore the possibility of starting a free shuttle bus service connecting the Delhi Aerocity Metro station with the domestic terminal of the Airport (T-1) so that passengers travelling through Terminal-1 can also use the Airport Express line. Most of the passengers interacting with the minister were satisfied with the line because of its safe, comfortable and air-conditioned services. He travelled from Shivaji Stadium Metro station to the IGI Airport Metro station on his way to the IGI Airport for an official inspection. He also used the Airport Express line to come back from the Aerocity Metro station to Shivaji Stadium Metro station. The series of measures taken by DMRC to upgrade the services of this line has led to improved frequency of trains from 15 minutes to 10 minutes during the peak hours. "The maximum speed of the trains was increased to 80 kmph from 70 kmph. Therefore, the travel time from New Delhi to IGI Airport reduced to 19 minutes only. The total number of train trips was also increased to 166 from 148," said the spokesperson. The timing of the first service of the day was rescheduled to 4.45 am from New Delhi and Dwarka Sector 21. Earlier, the first train timing was 5.30 am from New Delhi and 5.15 am from Dwarka Sector 21. |
