Drive to make clean toilets accessible to girl students
New Delhi, June 29 "In 1,007 government schools, around 24,548 toilet seats are available for the use of students. In this scenario, the real challenge is not the number, but the lack of maintenance of toilets. The blockage in toilets makes them useless for students whereas lack of sanitation facilities becomes a stumbling block for the effective spread of education," said a senior official of the department. In order to deal with the poor conditions of toilets, the department has set up a time limit of three working days to unblock and unlock all the toilets and make them functional by carrying out the necessary repairs. Keeping this in view, the Education department has issued directions to all the heads of schools. "Due to improper maintenance and blockage in toilets, girl students have to face acute problems. They are forced to make use of unhygienic and unsafe places. In such circumstances, most girl students prefer not to go to the toilet at all which hampers their concentration in the classroom," said the official. It is expected that when the government schools are reopened after the summer vacation, girl students will witness fully functional toilets. |
