New Delhi, June 21
A 22-year old girl was gangraped in the parking lot of plush Ashok Hotel. She was violated by two men whom she had known for the last one year inside a car parked in the high-security Chanakyapuri area of New Delhi district, said a senior Delhi Police official.

The girl, a resident of Ghaziabad, alleged in her complaint that the accused promised her a job and took her to the parking lot of hotel where she was raped.

"As per the victim's statement, she has known the two men who also hail from Ghaziabad for the last one year. On April 25, the duo called her on the pretext of providing her a job. They took her in a car and parked it close to a five-star hotel in Chanakyapuri where they gave her some drink which made her lose consciousness," said a senior police official.

The victim told the police that when she regained consciousness, she learnt that she was being raped. The two men threatened her with dire consequences if she revealed the incident to anyone. She, however, reported the matter to the Chanakyapuri police station.

"She has further claimed that the duo called her again on June 3 on the pretext of providing her a job and again raped her in the car near ISBT," the official said.

A case has been registered at the Chanakyapuri police station. "The girl has refused to undergo a medical test. We are investigating the case," the official added.

DPCC protests hike in rail fares
Water cannons used on protestors who planned to stop trains
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 21
Staging a protest against the hike in rail fares, leaders of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) today burnt the effigy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Sagarpur Crossing, Pankha Road.

Protestors were stopped by the police from moving towards the Delhi-Gurgaon railway line on Delhi Cantt. railway station. They were planning to stop trains in protest against the pre-budget price hike.

Addressing the protestors, DPCC president Arvinder Singh Lovely criticised the Central government's decision and said that before elections, Modi promised to control inflation, for which he got the mandate and now he is betraying people by taking an anti-people decision.

"It will lead to further hike in the inflation and common people will be badly affected," he said.

At D-Block Janakpuri, the police made arrangements by placing barricades on the road leading towards the railway line. The police used water cannons and dispersed them.

The traffic on Pankha Road was affected due to the protest.

"This type of rise is the first of its kind and will further lead to rise in electricity tariff as most of the coal used for generating power is carried by the Railways. Delhi's citizens are feeling cheated after voting the BJP into power," said Lovely.

Mahabal Mishra, former MP from West Delhi, said that the protest will continue till the Modi government revokes the fare hike. "People of Sagarpur, Dwarka and adjoining areas are not getting electricity for hours in a day while the power companies are selling power to the malls depriving the common man of the basic needs," said Mishra.

Metro services hit on Dwarka route
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 21
Delhi Metro services were disrupted for around two hours this afternoon after some 'foreign material' got entangled in the overhead electrification (OHE) wire near Rajouri Garden station due to thunderstorm.

Hundreds of passengers had a harrowing time as the trains were delayed for 10-15 minutes at every station on the Dwarka Sector-21 to Noida City Centre route.

According to a DMRC spokesperson, some foreign material got entangled in the OHE wire near Rajouri Garden station due to thunderstorm around 3:45 pm.

Train movement was regulated in two short loops from Kirti Nagar to Noida-Vaishali and Subhash Nagar to Dwarka. Trains were running on a single line between Kirti Nagar and Subhash Nagar stations, the spokesperson said.

"The eight-coach trains were jampacked as passengers were struggling to reach their destination on time so everyone was stuffing up in the next available train," said a regular commuter on the route.

Another daily commuter said the trains were delayed by several minutes which led to queuing up on the platforms and also caused a lot of commotion.

The DMRC spokesperson said normalcy was restored at around 5.15 pm after the infringement was removed from the overhead wire.

DERC's decision on public hearings ill-timed: AAP
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 21
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) today questioned the timing of the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission's (DERC) decision on holding public hearings on the petitions submitted by the private power distribution companies (discoms) seeking tariff hike.

The party said it supported the demand of the various resident welfare associations to postpone any such public discussion on the petitions submitted by the discoms till the ongoing audit of their accounts by the Comptroller and Auditor General (C&AG) is completed.

The party categorically stated that the DERC indication on the upward tariff revision possibly next month will be met with severe resistance and will not be allowed.

"The DERC impartiality is in doubt given its track record and the current move to publicly discuss the unreasonable demands of the discoms at a time when their dismal performance required a review of whether their licences need to be cancelled. The decision to hold public hearings is highly questionable and ill-timed," the party said.

According the AAP, discoms made lame excuses to avoid the CAG audit over the past decade with the "active connivance" of the then Sheila Dikshit government.

Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 21
The Chandni Chowk redevelopment work has finally started with the laying of underground ducts for utility cables like power and telephones as the first step towards the long pending project.

The work is being undertaken by the Public Works Department (PWD). The Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) ducting work will be carried out in six phases of about one each, said a senior PWD official.

In the first phase, ducts will be laid out in the Northern carriageway from Fatehpuri Mosque to Town Hall. During this period, the Northern carriageway will be blocked by barricading the above stretch.

To avoid inconvenience to the commuters and residents, Delhi traffic police made special traffic arrangements and a vehicular restrictions plan to support the work.

A lane of 2.5m width will be provided next to the central verge for the movement of light vehicles such as cars, autos, two wheelers and for rickshaws. For pedestrian movement, apart from the approaches from the footpath at the ends of the barricading, at least two crossover points will be made available for approaching the shops from the Southern carriageway.

There will total restriction on the light motor vehicle and heavy transport vehicle on the 2.5m lane next to the central verge in the Northern carriageway.

The vehicular restriction plan includes measure like no stopping, waiting, loading and unloading in the 2.5m carriageway for any class of vehicles and for hand-drawn carts. There will be compulsory left turn on Church Mission Road for traffic coming out of Khari Baoli.

Entry on Church Mission Road from SP Mukherjee Marg will be restricted to the local traffic up to Baghdwar Road. Church Mission Road will be 'One-Way' from Fatehpuri to Baghdwar T-point.

"We solicit cooperation from the Chandni Chowk Vyapar Mandal, market associations, residents' associations and from the general public to bear with the temporary inconvenience in the interest of restoring Chandni Chowk to its historic glory. Motorists are advised to follow the diversions and obey instructions of the traffic policemen," said the official.

Advisory traffic signage at appropriate locations has been placed for the guidance of motorists.
