BMS students protest over course uncertainty

In the absence of any clarity about their future, students already admitted to the bachelor of honours in management studies (BMS) course at Delhi University staged a protest here on Monday.

The BMS was introduced as a part of the four-year undergraduate programme which was scrapped on June 20 after a weeklong tussle between DU and the University Grants Commission (UGC) over its continuation.

"We have been protesting for the last few days and have suffered physical and mental pressure but still UGC continues to shift the date of meeting to consider our demands," said Ashis Jain, a student enrolled under BMS.

As the four-year undergraduate programme has been rolled back, BMS stands scrapped.

The BMS course was introduced after merging three courses - B.A (honours) Business Economics (BBE), Bachelor of Business Studies (BBS) and Bachelor of Financial and Investment Analysis (BFIA) - that were earlier run.

"We want the BMS course to stay for us and the batch that comes after. Only a single batch receiving a BMS degree won't help. Our degrees will not be valued and will be termed as a failed experiment," said Navdeep, studying BMS in Bhim Rao Ambedkar College.

While the university declared Sunday that the admission to BBS and B.A (honours) Business Economics will be held on the basis of the criteria already announced for BMS admission 2014-15.

"Our demand is 'Bring back BMS'. If the competent authorities do not do anything, we will go to court...," said Aman Garg of Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies. — IANS

NDMC passes resolution ensuring houses to MLAs

New Delhi, June 30
AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal's housing troubles are set to end as the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has passed a proposal which ensures accommodation for members of the Council who are elected as MP and MLAs.

The proposal, passed on June 20 at a Council meeting presided by BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi, ensures allocation of houses in the NDMC area for New Delhi MP and MLA, and Delhi Cantonment MLA.

The civic agency is preparing the minutes of the meeting and will send the proposal to the Ministry of Home Affairs in 3-4 days for its approval, NDMC officials said.

According to NDMC Act 2011, the MP of New Delhi constituency and MLAs from New Delhi and Cantonment Assembly constituencies automatically become members of the civic body.

The Act makes New Delhi MP Lekhi, New Delhi MLA Kejriwal and AAP's Delhi Cantt MLA Surinder Singh members of the Council.

Till now, the practice to allot residences is only followed in the case of nominated members.

The civic agency had earlier written thrice to the Home Ministry to extend this facility to elected members as well.

The matter was again taken up and a resolution passed after Surinder Singh requested an accommodation after becoming a member of the council, the officials said.

However, Kejriwal has not applied for a house in the NDMC area yet.

On being asked if the AAP chief will apply for an accommodation if Home Ministry approves NDMC's proposal, party leaders said they can talk about the matter only after something concrete comes up. — PTI

Reduce market fee, suggest traders
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 30
Responding to the notice issued by Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung for ceasing the Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) and Market of National Importance (MNI) at Azadpur, traders of New Sabzi Mandi suggested that instead of cancelling the fruit and vegetable market committees, the government should reduce the market fee.

President of the Chamber of Youth Association Raju Kohli and general secretary Umesh Agarwal said, "We may suggest that the market fees may be reduced to .01 per cent or .10 per cent. We may further suggest that other rules and regulations should remain in force as they are."

The LG issued a notice ceasing the APMC for regulation of marketing of fruit and vegetables. He also sought suggestions from the traders.

The traders said that before shifting of Old Sabzi Mandi to Azadpur and enforcement of Delhi Agricultural Produce Marketing Act 1976, there was a jungle raj. The farmers did not get the actual price of their produce and they were often cheated. Due to 'kucha' road and unhygienic conditions, produce of the farmers went waste and they had to suffer heavy losses.

Since the mandi was shifted to Azadpur and the Act 1976 was implemented, the trade of fruit and vegetables was regulated in a civilised manner, licences were issued to traders and the produce of farmers recorded at the entry gate. The farmers are getting the right price of their produce.
