Building collapse
New Delhi, July 6 The labourers, employed by the building owner, were demolishing the fourth floor at about 1.50 am on Saturday, when the recently constructed three storeys of the building fell. The 15 victims were trapped under the debris of the building. They were taken out during a rescue operation that lasted until 6.30 am today. The injured were taken to the Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital in Dilshad Garden. Most of them were discharged after receiving the first aid. The body of the labour contractor, Fukraan, was handed to his family after the police conducted the postmortem. The police have registered a case under Indian Penal Code sections 304 (culpable homicide) and 288 (negligent conduct with respect to repairing of a building). The owner of the collapsed building, Mehrajuddin, is reportedly yet to join the police investigations. The police claim that the owner had not received clearance from the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) and therefore is afraid of joining the investigations. EDMC Mayor Ram Narayan Dubey, who visited the spot at about 2:30 pm on Saturday, said "We have ordered an inquiry into the incident and things will be clear soon," he said. According to the police's preliminary investigations, they received a call informing them about cracks in the building at about 6.38 pm on Friday. Following the call, several police officers and officials of the EDMC and local administration reached the building site. They decided to evacuate the building and adjacent structures. The building housed a jeans manufacturing factory at the basement and a defunct motorcycle showroom on the first floor. "The municipal corporation issued a three-day notice to the building owner and asked him to demolish it, otherwise they would," said a police officer. According to the agreement with the officials, Mehrajuddin's nephew, Faisal, directed his own labourers to demolish the building. |
Ugandan national molested, thrashed by four youths
New Delhi, July 6 They allegedly offered her a lift in a Skoda car to her residence in Shakarpur. On the way, they allegedly molested her and when she resisted, they beat her up and dumped her near the Mahipalpur flyover. The accused have been arrested from Mayur Vihar in east Delhi. They are identified as Prakhar Gupta (22), Amandeep (22), Swapnal Rana (21) and Daman (24), all residents of Mayur Vihar. Two of the accused are students of hotel management in Bangalore, one of them is a B.Tech. graduate and the fourth was appearing for his entrance exams in mass communication. The police said the victim had arrived in India three months ago for medical treatment. Prakhar reportedly met the victim last night at a party. Most colleges close admission to popular DU courses
New Delhi, July 6 While the picture looked somewhat similar in admissions to most preferred courses for the OBCs, there appeared to be a marginal decline in the cut-off percentage for the reserved categories, Scheduled Castes (SC) Scheduled Tribes (ST) and People With Disabilities (PWD) in most of the courses. Knowing the fact that colleges are bound to admit students who qualify the cut-off list, Daulat Ram College (DRC) wound up its students' intake for this academic year in economics, English, Hindi at 95 pc, 89.5 pc and 74.2 pc respectively. For B. Com., DRC has declared a qualifying score of 95.25 pc, a dip of .25 pc even as it shut its annual intake for OBC candidates with as much as nine pc decrease to 70 pc in the cut-off percentage for PWD category. When it comes to the most preferred courses, several other colleges
such as Ram Lal Anand College, Ramjas College, too have more or less closed their admission both for the general and OBC categories. Ram Lal Anand College too has closed its admission in commerce, English Hindi, political science, history, microbiology both for the general and OBC students and in Hindi it has stopped admitting students in all categories except PWD fixing up a cut-off of 58 pc. Those looking upon Ramjas as one of the options for B.Com. course would be disappointed to know that it has sealed its admission for B.Com. course for general, OBC as well as SC category candidates as is the case for Hindi in which it has stopped admitting students in general and PWD categories while in economics, statistics, mathematics, physics and zoology, the doors are closed for general category students. Nonetheless, for those hoping to pursue humanities with English have a reason to cheer as the college has declared the fourth cut-off though with a minor dip with the qualifying percentage for the general category being at 90.25 and above (.75 less than the previous cut-off) while for the OBC, it stood at nearly three pc less at 80.25 which is the same for the SC category. |

AAP slams UPA in Ishrat encounter case
New Delhi, July 6 According to the party representatives, the involvement of senior IB officials in "conspiring, planning and participating in the cold-blooded murder to the extent of even planting weapons on the bodies of the victims shows that the UPA was also complicit in this violation of the rule of law." This comes days after the revelations that the CBI is suspecting the role of IB officials and political hands in the Ishrat Jahan encounter case. Urging that the CBI chargesheet should be taken seriously in this case as this is a court-monitored investigation which reconfirms what was already established by a magisterial inquiry and the second inquiry conducted by an SIT, they added that such is the clout of the IB within the Home Ministry that the CBI has been prevented from chargesheeting the IB officials against whom the agency has collected enormous evidence. |
