Vice-President Hamid Ansari presents a memento to Kartar Singh at the PGI’s 51st foundation day function in Chandigarh on Saturday. It was a moment to cheer not only for the PGI for having completed 51 years of existence, but also for 58-year-old Kartar Singh, who finds himself to be the most fortunate non-faculty employee of the institute to have been recognised and honoured by the Vice-President for his sanitation services on the PGI’s foundation day today.

Medicines and surgical instruments worth Rs 50 lakh were destroyed in a fire that broke out at a medical store in Mani Majra this morning. The drugs stocked at two upper floors of the building were destroyed.

Chemists’ bids to be linked with discount
Chandigarh, July 6
Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ghulam Nabi Azad during the 51st Foundation Day function of the PGIMER in Chandigarh on Saturday. The general body (GB) of the PGIMER wants to make the highest discount offered as  bidding criteria for the auction of shops. The system, if implemented, will bring relief for patients as chemists will focus on sales and not on the rent which runs into lakhs.

Accused flees from hospital

Teachers of various government schools will gather on July 8 at the Jama Masjid ground in Sector 20 to discuss the latest letter issued by the UT Education Department regarding the anticipated extension of their school timings under the Right to Education (RTE) Act.

University to take strict action against erring students

A day after a bloody clash was reported on the Panjab University (PU) campus, the university authorities have decided that strict action will be taken against the university students involved in the incident and ban the entry of the outsiders’ involved in the clash that left two seriously injured.

PU rejects student’s demand for waiving fine

The four-member committee constituted by Panjab University (PU) in the incident of two University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS) students reportedly involved in racing on the campus has rejected the demand of the student for waiving the fine of Rs 41,300 imposed on him for damaging the PU property.

Mango Mela kicks off at Pinjore
Kalka, July 6
This one is delicious: A child has a nice time sitting on a stall during Mango Festival at Pinjore on Saturday. Two-day Mango Mela, jointly organised by the Tourism and Horticulture Departments of the state, began today in the Yadavindra Gardens, by Paramvir Singh, Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Fisheries, Mines and Geology Minister, Haryana.

Traffic blocked over erratic power supply
Fatehgarh Sahib, July 6
Farmers of Bag Sikander and other villages of Ferozepur, blocked the Sirhind-Morinda road due to irregular power supply in their areas. The traffic blockage caused traffic jam for about one hour.

Nigerian arrested with 5-gm cocaine
Chandigarh, July 6
A 35-year-old Nigerian was held with 5 gm of cocaine from the Sector 18 market yesterday. The accused has been identified as Dav Otokhinea, a resident of Dashmesh Colony, Dhakoli, Zirakpur. In charge of the crime branch Ranjodh Singh stated that the visa of the accused had expired and he was staying in the country illegally.
