SAD (Badal) protests delay in naming ‘1984 memorial park’
New Delhi, November 10 Members and supporters of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), Badal, and Justice for Victims said that they were hurt by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit's decision on scuttling the memorial for the 1984 victims. "The move has been initiated to commemorate the victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh massacre and honour them. It has been widely appreciated by the leaders of the Sikh community throughout the country. It is evident from the records of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation and its Mayor Savita Gupta that a park opposite Gurdwara Tikana Sahib, Punjabi Bagh, was to be named as '1984 Sikh Memorial Park'. Then what's the delay about? " asked a senior SAD (Badal) leader. The foundation stone of the same was to be laid by Arun Jaitely, Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha, at a big ceremony last week. Others who were slated to attend the function were BJP Delhi State Committee Chairman Vijendra Gupta, Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and several other prominent leaders of the community. "While interfering in the constitutional and autonomous rights of the Municipal Corporation, the Chief Minister has only transgressed her authority. The SAD (Badal), Delhi State, is of the opinion that the Chief Minister is stalling the renaming of the park due to political reasons," said an official statement by the SAD (Badal) today. |
