Darbar move set to increase traffic woes
25,000 more vehicles will choke Jammu roads Arteev Sharma Tribune News Service
Jammu, October 16
Traffic Police, which is grappling with the major problem of shortage of manpower, has been exploring options to streamline movement of vehicles. “There are around 5.5 lakh vehicles in Jammu. The figure is nearly half of the total vehicular population of the state. The city roads generally remain cloc-a-block, with traffic moving at snail’s pace. The road length in the city is just 704.22 kilometre while the density of vehicles is 574 per kilometre,” an official told The Tribune. According to official statistics, a traffic cop controls around 1,700 vehicles on Jammu roads as the department is battling with severe manpower crunch, the official said, adding that though the traffic signals have been made functional and it will the maiden Darbar move since the installation of these signals, it will hardly make any difference to the chaotic traffic scenario on roads. As part of the Darbar move, the Civil Secretariat - seat of government - and other government offices are scheduled to close in Srinagar on October 25 and will reopen in Jammu, the state’s winter capital, on November 5. “Around 25,000 vehicles, including those of ministers, bureaucrats and other officials will stay put at Jammu for the next six months with the shifting of the Civil Secretariat. In the wake of prevailing chaos on the city roads, the VVIP and VIP movement will make things more difficult for the traffic police, which is presently facing shortage of 50 per cent manpower,” sources added. Sources said nearly 20,000 fresh vehicles have also been added to the city traffic since the shifting of the Civil Secretariat and other offices to Srinagar in April. “If one goes by the figures of Regional Transport Office (RTO) Jammu, close to 3,000 vehicles were added to Jammu roads on a monthly basis. It will be a tough time for commuters as well as traffic cops while they go about putting up with traffic snarls,” sources said. SSP (traffic), Jammu, Manmohan Singh, said, “We are hopeful traffic movement will be better this time because of installation of traffic signals.” |

LPG shortage spurs induction stove demand
Jammu, October 16
Wholesale dealers in Jammu claim sale of induction stoves in Jammu region has increased manifold while previously, the phenomenon was mainly concentrated in Ladakh and Kashmir. “Earlier, we used to supply these stoves mainly to Kargil and Leh as during winters, these areas are cut-off from the rest of the country and are dependent on these heaters. As the state is short of cylinders, people are now demanding these electric heaters in Jammu too,” said Ashok Gupta, a wholesale dealer from Shaheedi Chowk. “A non-subsidised domestic cylinder will cost over Rs 950 while average cost for an electric induction stove for a family of five doesn't exceed Rs 800 per month,” he added. Shopkeepers claim the sale will further increase once the secretariat moves to Jammu, as most people working with the secretariat are not residents of Jammu. Hence, they are to go through a cumbersome process for procuring LPG cylinders. Thus, for them, the electric induction stoves arguably make for a better option. Induction stoves and microwaves have their limitations, but despite problems, people are buying them. Resident Sarita Bakshi said, "One can only use steel utensils on an induction stove. Moreover, it is not possible to fry vegetables on it, but still, I am buying one as it saves both time and money." “My aunt lives in Ludhiana and she gave me the idea of using the induction stove as they have been using it for long. I have been using it for the last few weeks and have noticed that the meter reading is not that fast. Paying electricity bills is far better than struggling for LPG cylinders,” she added. |

Jammu, October 16 However, they hailed the support extended by Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, who had demanded that the SC/ST and women should be provided reservation. The community said the reservation in the democratic institutions was must for the empowerment of the tribals. Addressing a press conference, Jammu and Kashmir Gujjar Bakerwal Conference chief spokesperson Dr Gafoor Ahmed said the successive governments in the state had denied rights to the tribal community despite they represented 25 per cent of the population. Hailing the support extended by Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, senior Gujjar leader Anwar Choudhary said the tribal community was seeking justice from the administration. “Without reservation for weaker sections in the society, there is no fun of conducing elections. Sports deptt of JU takes serious note of participation of non-students
Vikas Sharma Tribune News Service
Jammu, October 16 Sources said GGM Science college team raised objections over the inclusion of the non-students by Mahant Bachitar Singh College (MBSC) in the playing XI during a league match of the recently concluded inter-collegiate football tournament, before the start of the competition. Sources said the GGM Science College team had lodged their protest with the organising committee claiming that the included players were playing for the local clubs. However, due to timely intervention of the concerned officials, the matter was sorted out and the match was played without any interruption. Sources said the Directorate of Sports and Physical Education had already issued clear instructions to all the affiliated colleges not to indulge in such practices but the recent spurt in these incidents were posing problems for the department to conduct the competitions in a smooth manner. “It is really unfortunate that some of the colleges are resorting to cheap tactics just to register a win,” said one of the participants of the inter-collegiate competition. “A similar incident was occurred during a match held at GDC, Udhampur, in the previous edition of the tournament,” he added. “The Directorate of Sports and Physical Education has done the right thing by verifying the actual members of a team just before the commencement of a competition through the identity cards of the students of the participating college,” another participant said. Prof Dhian S Bhau, director, Directorate of Sports and Physical Education, JU while confirming the development told The Tribune, “This is not for the first time that we are dealing strictly with this issue.
