New Delhi, August 25
The Delhi police today said that adequate measures have been taken to check any untoward incident caused by the participants of the "dharna", called by the activist of the India Against Corruption (IAC), Arvind Kejriwal tomorrow.

The IAC has announced a one-day protest at Jantar Mantar on the coal block allocation issue. It has alleged that the Congress and the BJP are working hand in glove while pursuing the matter.

The police at the same time warned that strict legal action would be initiated if the rules and regulations are violated near the residences of the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, and the national president of the BJP, Nitin Gadkari.

In a virtual rejection of the application for permission, Additional Commissioner (New Delhi) K.C. Dwivedi said that the entire area of New Delhi police district, except parts of Jantar Mantar and Parliament Street, is under Section 144 of the CrPc till September 7.

"Violation of its provisions will attract legal action and will be against the conditions of the undertaking to be furnished by the organiser. It is, therefore, incumbent upon you to advise the organisation to desist from indulging in any unlawful act which may disturb the law and order of the area," Dwivedi said in a letter to IAC.

The letter by Dwivedi dated August 23 was made public on Saturday on the Facebook page of the IAC.

Citing seven violations during their previous protest at Jantar Mantar from July 25 to August 3 for which IAC activist Neeraj Kumar gave an undertaking, Dwivedi said that past experiences show that the police cannot rely on his assurances as he was not able to direct the actions of leaders and participants as per the conditions of the undertaking.

"It is imperative that the undertaking is furnished by only that office-bearer of your organisation who can exercise control over everyone participating in the dharna," he said.

New Delhi, August 25
In the backdrop of the London Olympics 2012 that ended on August 12, Kunwar Pranav Singh, a renowned wrestler and now the Khanpur MLA, today staged a symbolic protest at Jantar Mantar against the apathy shown towards sportspersons on several fronts while pushing for a demand that "sportspersons should be made sports ministers".

"Despite being a sportsman I was not included in the Indian contingent that visited the London Olympics and those who had no experience were sent with the team. Their visits along with their families were funded by the government and Olympic bodies while I had to seek permission from the state unit and later the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) for my visit," said Singh, an Asian gold medallist and seven-time national heavyweight wrestling champion.

"Persons known for their sporting talents should be sports ministers as only they can understand the intricacies of sports and difficulties faced by sportsmen," he said.

"In the guise of officials, many visits are organised at government's expenses. Besides, there are unhealthy practices such as appointment to various sports federations. The entire system has to change," Singh added.
