Abohar
Electrician dies as bore well caves in
: An electrician, Gian Prasad, was killed while his companion, Pawan Kumar, sustained injuries when the bore well they had entered to repair a motor caved in. The incident occurred at Gumjal village of Abohar sub-division. Both were hired by a farmer to rectify a snag in a motor fitted at the bottom of the borewell in his field. Army personnel were summoned, but they proved to be of little help.

18 teachers found absent in Mansa
: A team of the Education Department found 18 teachers absent from duty in various schools in Mansa. Another 22 teachers had reached school late. A departmental action has been initiated against them. Additional Project Director, Sarv Sikhaya Abhiyan, Parampal Kaur said such inspections were necessary to improve the standard of education.

Teacher gets jail in fake degree case
: The Judicial Magistrate (First Class) awarded a three-year jail term to a resident of Sandhwan village of Faridkot, Bagjit Singh, for using a fake degree to get a job in the Education Department. Bagjit had got the job of a primary teacher in 2001. Bagjit’s B.Ed degree from Lucknow University was found to be fake.

Handcuffing of undertrial: PSHRC notice to State
: The Punjab State Human Rights Commission (PSHRC) has asked for a report from the government and district officials over handcuffing of an undertrial. The orders were issued after Arvind Thakur, chairperson of Global Human Rights Council, Chandigarh, lodged a complaint on Thursday. The undertrial, Jagtar, is facing trial in the murder case of Ropar Block Samiti member Netra Singh. He was admitted to the local Civil Hospital for treatment following an injury where Thakur found him lying handcuffed on a bed. This was in violation of human rights as no undertrial could be handcuffed, he claimed.
