GMSH courts controversy again

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation is considering issuing outdated wireless sets to the inspectors of the enforcement department for better communication though they have already been equipped with mobile phones. At a meeting of the enforcement committee held here today, it was discussed that the wireless sets would be provided to the inspectors and sub-inspectors of the enforcement wing for better communication among them during anti-encroachment drives.

While in the budget of the corporation, Rs 1.5 crore has been approved for the modernisation of seven dhobi ghats at Sector 7, 15, 19, 20, 22, 27 and 32, at the last meeting of the finance and contract committee, a proposal was tabled by officials for the renovation of the dhobi ghat at Sector 32 at a cost of Rs 28 lakh.

Family raises questions over police investigations
Chandigarh, August 25
The family of Pradeep, who allegedly committed suicide at his paramour’s residence at Kajheri yesterday, has raised questions on the police investigations, as they alleged that Pradeep has been murdered and the police is trying to shield the accused, Seema. They also alleged that no one commits suicide wearing only undergarments. Pradeep was in a live-in relationship with Seema.

The professional development committee of the Institute Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) on Saturday organised a seminar on “New horizons for professional excellence”. The event was attended by over 200 chartered accountants from the tricity. Inaugurating the seminar, Sanjeev Sharma, chairman, ICAI, said, “The chartered accountancy profession is under the re-defining moment. The taxation laws are undergoing a drastic change. The aim of this conference is to provide an environment to discuss and debate some of the key issues with peers, professionals and specialists and share ideas and experience. Charanjot Singh Nanda, chairman, professional development committee, introduced the objectives of their committee and urged members to seek maximum benefits from it.

Workshop on healthy habits
Mohali: Smart Wonders School, Sector 71, Mohali, had organised a workshop on 'healthy habits' for the students of class KG, first and second. Dr Sandeep Jain, a renowned pediatrician of the Tricity, addressed the students on correct eating habits and emphasised on the importance of regular physical activity to stay healthy. "These days parents complain that their children lack concentration, get tired easily and becoming obese. Provide services within stipulated period: DC

The officials must redress the grievances of people and their work should be done within the stipulated period as per the provisions of the Right to Service Act, so that they don’t face unnecessary harassment. This was stated by Yashveer Mahajan, Deputy Commissioner, while presiding over a meeting of district heads of various departments here today. If anybody was found responsible for delay, a suitable action under the Civil Services Act would be initiated against that official, he added.

Pothholed roads add to people's agony

The residents of Dera Bassi have been facing problems due to the poor condition of roads here. Some main roads, including Tehsil road, Government College and Longowal College roads are also lying in bad condition. During morning and evening, particularly in the rainy seasons, students and other commuters face problems due to the poor condition of roads. The residents have been continually demanding the repair of the roads as poor condition of them causing inconvenience to people.

Youth dupes woman of Rs 80,000
Kalka, August 25
Saroj Ahuja, a resident of kalka, have lodged a complaint against an unknown youth, who illegally withdrew Rs 80,000 from her account. In her complaint to the Pinjore police the victim alleged, that on August 15, 2012, she had went to the ATM of SBI to withdraw money from her account. Meanwhile, a youth was also standing there , who helped her in withdrawing the money.

Foreigner held for overstay
Chandigarh, August 25
The police today arrested a nationalist of Uzbekistan for overstaying in India. The woman was earlier arrested in 2004 but was acquitted in 2009. However, she didn't return to her country.

2 employees of PU held for embezzlement

The UT police today registered a case against two employees of Panjab University for withdrawing cash from the Punjab University Employees Fund. Both the employees have been booked under Section 409 and 120-B of the IPC.
